The Isle of Purbeck in Dorset has some unusual features, not least that it is not an island at all but a peninsula, but nonetheless it is a unique and special place for residents and visitors. Framed by Poole Harbour and the English Channel it has a curious mix of geographic features, resulting in some dynamic coastal formations and more species of wild flowers than any other comparable area in the country. The famous Purbeck stone hails from here too and is widely used locally, forming a feature of charming traditional Dorset buildings as exemplified perfectly by April Cottage. The Cottage and Lodge are situated in the village of Harman's Cross, halfway between Corfe Castle and Swanage. It is the first cottage on the left when turning into South Instow. Reached from Wareham on the A351 or by ferry from Sandbanks to Studland it is a location ideal for exploring the local and wider attractions. South coast attractions nearby include Brownsea Island, Studland Beach, Poole and Bournemouth, and within walking distance is the Swanage Heritage Railway. The Isle of Purbeck cliffs are truly spectacular and lead onto the notable geological formations of Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door. Your hosts at April Cottage are Joanna and Peter Burri-Weaver and in keeping with the unique blend of characteristics on the Isle of Purbeck they offer a personalised level of Anglo-Swiss hospitality sure to make any guest feel welcome. In addition, not many guest accommodations can boast an ex-Olympian and SAS descendant for hosts and just for some extra appeal the full English breakfast which comes with every stay can be taken in the large gardens, weather permitting of course. Two guest rooms are available at April Cottage, a ground floor twin room with private bathroom and a large first floor double en-suite, reached by spiral staircase. The double room can accommodate a further bed. There is ample parking on-site and free Wi-Fi. The Lodge can accommodate 3-4 people or can be hired for a private BBQ. There is hardly a more romantic place for you to enjoy a cosy evening.

We stayed with Peter and Joanna for three nights early October and was met with a very warm welcome. The breakfasts were different daily as was the wonderful platters of fruit, some of which were more unusual. Stayed at the cottage the last weekend in October 2020. Peter the host was very accommodating and welcoming. Breakfast was lovely. Beds very comfy and warm. Had an eiderdown which I haven't seen in years. I was a bit nervous with the spiral staircase but that's just me. Unfortunately due to new covid regulations we couldn't use the dining room other than for breakfast which was a bit awkward cos we were with friends but that's not Peter's fault obviously. The gardens are lovely and would be so enjoyable in the summer. I lost my charm off my bracelet whilst there but Peter sent it back to me.

We stayed in upstairs double bedroom with en suite and our sons in twin bedroom with private bathroom on ground floor. The whole place was spotlessly cleaned and very nicely decorated with artifacts from Peter and Joanna's travels. They are a delightful couple and gracious hosts. We felt at home throughout our stay. The fruit platter at breakfast was the highlight!

Very last minute booking as we were on a road trip and Peter welcomed us to come and stay as he had a cancellation. Very comfortable bed and beautiful, interesting furnishings as Peter and his wife are well travelled. Excellent breakfast. Cosy and clean. The lap land lodge is fun as I asked Peter if we could see it. Beautiful area to explore.

My partner and I have just spent a lovely short break at April Cottage. Despite the rather awful weather, we had a great time, largely thanks to the comfort provided in the excellent en suite room at the top of April Cottage and the warm and professional hospitality provided by Peter and Joey, the owners. They anticipate every need from the delicious, beautifully-presented breakfast to the welcome tray, electric blanket and lovely bedding. We tried several of the pubs they recommended for dinner and all were so good. Thank you both so much for making our stay so very enjoyable! We hope to be back. A beautiful, interesting area too - lots to do.
