Detailed Reviews
This was our second visit to the Lighthouse Holiday Cottages, after staying in the Lighthouse Keeper's cottage for the first time 18 months ago.
This time we stayed in the larger Kittiwake House (3 bedrooms) so that our two teenagers could have a bedroom each.
Again we have been very impressed with the presentation and quality of these cottages and our stay was nothing short of fantastic.
Kittiwake House is very spacious throughout with a large kitchen and big bedrooms. The dining/living area is probably the only room that isn't quite as spacious. However this, in no way detracted from our stay and made the cool evenings a cozy affair in front of the log fireplace.
Our kids loved their individual bedrooms and our master bedroom, with a super king bed was incredibly comfortable. In fact we both agreed that the bed was more comfortable than our own bed at home (that says something!).
The surrounding area is nothing short of breathtaking and the nearby Gallie Craig was enjoyable for coffee and cake. Port Logan, Portpatrick and Drummer are all excellent day trips within drives all under 30 minutes.
If you enjoy spotting sea life, bird life or ships, this location is golden. A pair of binoculars is definitely an essential to get the most out of this location.
It can be quite windy out on the bluff, but that is to be expected given the exposed location. However we were treated to some brilliant weather, which afforded us some calm nights with splendid stargazing opportunities.
If you're looking for a real retreat away, with quality accommodation, we would highly recommend these cottages. The fact this is our second stay says it all and I suspect we will be back again in the future!

We booked just after new year and the earliest availability was 19 Sep 20. We booked 2 weeks and we have visited the Lightkeepers Cottage on a number of occasions. As COVID took hold we wondered what would happen. Thankfully we were allowed to have our holiday. The weather was very good with some beautiful sunshine in the first week. The area was secured for residents of the cottages only, so good COVID isolation. During the break we had good bird and sea life watching: spotted Porpoise, Minke Whale, Seals, Peregrine Falcon, Gannets, Ravens etc. Did a bit of sea fishing near New England Bay. Drummore Stores was our local shop, and they are very good. Also got doorstep deliveries of fresh fish and shellfish from Ferry Fish. Excellent selection and delivered right to your door. Had a nice visit to Soleburn Garden Centre near Stranraer. During our stay we discovered the cottage was available after our reservation, so we were extremely lucky to book an extra week. The cottage has good internet so I could work from the cottage. We also visited Galloway Smokehouse on our journey which has nice fish and a very nice restaurant . Nearer to Dumfries we visited Kilnford Farm Shop and enjoyed a nice lunch.
The Lightkeepers Cottage is central heated, so it is lovely and cosy with nice hot water for a bath or shower. It is well equipped . All you need to supply is your favourite food and drinks, and of course yourself.

This lighthouse holiday was absolutely amazing! It was a truly beautiful setting in which it was easy to relax. We also had amazing weather which was better than we’d have had at home☺️
There was plenty to do in the area including botanic garden and several beaches and coastal walks
The cottage itself was well equipped and there was plenty of room for us and the dogs. The enclosed courtyard was very handy and is an extra safety feature for both dogs and any young children.
The log burner was a bonus with a plentiful supply of logs etc.
The Gallie Craig Cafe was a real treat - lovely meals and delicious cakes if you fancy a treat rather than cooking
Fantastic views and access to a coastal path makes it ideal for wildlife and walking - we saw buzzards really close up as well as seals by the beach and two roe deer wandering just outside the wall.
All we heard for five days was birds, wind and sea!!
We have already booked for next summer
Thank you for a brilliant holiday ☺️☺️

We stayed at Puffin House for the first time, having seen the cottages before on our many visits to the Mull of Galloway. The layout, comfort level and beautiful pre-Victorian original features of the cottage (those gorgeous internal window shutters, particularly) surpassed our expectations. The location is truly amazing, and its 'away from it all' feel is especially felt when the RSPB reserve visitors have left for the day. We spotted deer, a merlin resting on the wall of the walled garden, and, of course, hundreds of sea birds. So beautiful! We will return! And thanks, Alison, for your emails. They made us feel safe (Covid-wise) in these strange times.

A unique place to stay for a quiet few days away. We stayed in Puffin House and had a very comfortable few days. All facilities were as needed - kitchen and equipment for mealtimes provided, comfortable living space and bedrooms. We had a minor issue at check in which was resolved very promptly - the team behind the cottages were apologetic and made sure we were happy with the outcome, I was impressed at how quickly it was resolved and level of service provided. Great for dog friendly holidays, amazing views and some down-time as a couple.

We stayed in Puffin, a three bedroom cottage, with just the two of us so there was bags of space.
The accommodation was bright and airy with fantastic views from the rear facing rooms out over Luce Bay. The view from the front was blocked by a large building. What a place to put a lighthouse!
Having driven most of the way through torrential rain, the skies cleared as we entered the top of the Mull. By the time we passed through Drummore, there was hardly a cloud in the sky. For the duration of our stay, it was generally dry and sunny.
Puffin House is quite spacious. The two rear bedrooms are reasonable sized, though the front twin is quite small. The lounge is spacious, as is the kitchen, with everything that was needed to make for a highly enjoyable stay.
While we were there, we met some of the people who are involved in the Mull of Galloway Trust. They could not have been more friendly and welcoming.
The area is a fantastic place to visit, with plenty of walks on the doorstep, as well as an excellent, reasonably priced cafe. The views over Luce Bay and out to the Isle of Man are superb. Unfortunately, Ireland was generally shrouded in cloud, though we did manage a glimpse now and again. The cliffs are fantastic and the sea birds are constantly wheeling above.
I think you could say that we enjoyed our trip.

We had a wonderful holiday staying in Kittiwake House at the lighthouse cottages. They are unique, set in a stunning location with 360 degree views including glorious sunrises and sunsets. Well appointed and spotlessly clean they have everything you need for a self catering stay. The surrounding countryside was full of colour in June when we stayed with wild flowers in full bloom in the meadows, hedgerows and roadsides....even the cliffs and rocks. Other highlights in the area were the two little bays walking distance from the lighthouse, Port Logan Bay, Port Logan fish pond and Port Logan Botanic Gardens. All members of the Trust who we met or corresponded with who run these cottages were enthusiastic, helpful and ready to go the extra mile to accommodate you and make sure you enjoy your stay.....but special thanks go to Alison and John.

The latest visit and we loved it again. The cottage is well laid out and well equipped. The staff are helpful, friendly and well informed. The combination of the beautiful remote location, as well as the lighthouse and Gallie Craig to hand, pretty places to visit and still more to discover, wildlife on hand, new ones every year, make this my ideal bolt hole. And there is the sun trap with spectacular views that is exclusive to Lightkeepers cottage. Perfect!
Covid measures made it a little quieter, with use of the compound restricted to residents, and the lighthouse and RSPB centre closed at present.
We were very glad that the foghorn is no longer in service, as we had a couple of very foggy days. We did find, however, that the fog was quite localised and that we didn't have to travel far to find it cleared and sunny! Covid measures in the cottage made us feel quite safe, although we missed reading material and the Visitors book! Already booked for next time! Many thanks

Two cottages, a 6 & 4 for a family group to celebrate a 60th birthday. Cottages were as described and very good indeed. Warm and cosy, especially given the rain and strong winds, with good internet access, shower and everything you'd need for self catering. Particular thanks go to the duty manager who responded to our plea for help when we locked ourselves out of one of the cottages...our own stupidity. Would recommend without reservation. There is a flat screen TV provided but it is not a huge screen size by modern standards and lacks accessible HDMI ports etc. Access to the private walled garden and summerhouse is provided and would be great on better weather days. Lighthouse is closed to visitors in winter so a very quiet location with not many visitors.

Another fabulous stay in Lightkeeper's Cottage! A better home from home! We even extended our stay when there, and never left the Mull over our six nights, just enjoying exploring and taking in the breathtaking scenery, day and night. The stars were incredible and the moonlight reflecting on the Atlantic was just spectacular. Ireland and the Isle of Man were so clear and it was amazing seeing the lights at night. It's such a special place, you feel truly blessed to to be there, never mind being able to stay there.
The cottage is lovely; spacious, comfortable (I have fractures in my spine and the bed is great!), very clean, with all the home comforts and amenities. It's so warm and cosy and we appreciated the foot thick walls, great double glazing and shutters during Storm Arwen! Our dog loved it too, very settled right from the moment he arrived.
We first stayed March 2020 just before lockdown and it was even better this time with better internet and Asda grocery delivery. The water is safe to drink but there is a woody taste so I would recommend having your own. There was a power cut the morning we left so we appreciated the torch in the kitchen, but maybe some matches for the candles would be good.
We can't recommend this highly enough and we will definitely be back!! The Trust does a great job - thank you so much!
