Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.

The Salutation Inn has garnered commendation for its spotless rooms and the warm hospitality provided by its attentive staff, an aspect that guests consistently highlight. While the beds are comfortable and the amenities, including quality dining options and kitchenettes, are well-received, there are mixed feelings regarding the hotel's value, with some questioning the cost relative to the experience.
Moreover, travelers enjoy the clean and inviting atmosphere, though a few yearn for more luxury. Issues with in-room beverage facilities have also been noted by some visitors.

Detailed Reviews
Had lunch here today, whilst our car was serviced in Exeter. We sat in the conservatory in the sunshine, with a glass of Pinot Blanc, then ordered from the fixed price lunch menu. We both chose the crispy ham hock terrine with pickled vegetables, nice contrast of textures, followed by line caught pollack, with a spicy ketchup sauce, served with potato purée, broccoli and samphire. Beautiful crisp skin on our fish, very smooth potato purée, the sauce really complimented the fish, it was spicy without being too hot. No room for dessert, but a very good cappuccino to finish.

Room Tip: Parking not that easy, Topsham has very narrow streets! Has some lovely small shops, definitely...

The staff in the Salutation are their main asset and their attentiveness and professionalism are a credit to the proprietors. Although I’m afraid that when paying over £500 for a two night stay the overall experience falls way short of expectations.
The bed and pillows are extremely comfortable, the bathroom is well appointed and toiletries are of very good quality. Breakfast is very good, and so it should be at the price, but I do have an issue about having to pre-order the night before.
The room overall, however, lacked a feeling of luxury. The tv remote worked after a fashion (I think the batteries were on the way out - does no one check them?). But the main issue is with the tea/coffee facilities. I know that in some respects this is minor but taken in the context of the room description and the price is very relevant. The room description states there are both tea and coffee machines. So, there is a kettle and a choice of 3 teas . There is no coffee machine. There are two coffee pods but these have to be taken to a communal kitchen area to use. The jar of instant coffee provided was empty. Bizarrely there is a cafetière provided but no ground coffee to put in it. I went without. I’m sure the management of the establishment will throw this back by saying that I should have raised it with them at the time. No, the fact is that this isn’t good enough when you are charging so much.
Would I stay again? Probably not.

Our now go to fish restaurant, undoubtedly the best around! We dined here with friends on Good Friday so was a full house and the food was amazing, well worth the money, a fish platter to share for £46 and add a whole lobster for just £39.. amazing value! The staff were on point too, so attentive, never had to fill our own glass once..! Can’t wait for my next visit

Just had a wonderful first stay at the Salutation Inn. Lovely room, great location and friendly, relaxed staff. We've already booked to return. We also had a fabulous dinner at the restaurant ( - to note, they have just started a residents menu if you eat before 8pm. ) Wonderfully cooked fish as you would expect. Can't wait to go back. Also an added bonus, you can help yourselves to free cereals, toast in the morning from the galley room on the first floor.

We had 2 nights dinner bed and breakfast and loved our stay . The room was clean and comfortable and we really appreciated the galley where we could make ourself Nespresso coffee with real milk from the fridge ( fruit and breakfast items also available to guests but we didn’t need them ) .
Breakfast fruit/yoghurt and a choice of cooked food was all freshly prepared and served to us at our table ; smoked haddock and poached egg highly recommended as well as the home made marmalade.
Dinner was excellent on both nights and our waitress recommended a red wine that was very drinkable and good value for money .
The weather exceeded expectations, always a bonus , so we walked miles and enjoyed some good sightings of waders on the estuary and we saw a variety of bird life in and around the RSPB centre .
Darts Farm has a wonderful choice of produce and gift items and we would highly recommend the whole area, the Salutation Inn and their amazing staff .

We booked into the Salutiation Inn for my partner's birthday. I had booked us the large room and on the day was presented with what only can only be described as a two room, two bathroom suite that was bigger than most 2 bed flats! It was a warm day so we were pleased that the windows opened and a fan was available so we could skeep well. The matress was soft as a cloud! We ate at the inn and the food was fantastic. The scallops were tender and not over cooked, we opted for the beef for our main and again it was excellently presented - the meat was cooked perfectly and the favours were well balanced. Although we were full we could not resist dessert and again they were fabulous. The service throughout our stay also can not be faulted. Thank you all!

Outstanding all around- Service, rooms, layout, location and food- loved having a separate kitchen on bedroom floor. Hired 4 rooms and all very well furnished . Saturday night gala dinner was delicious and all the plaudits you read about the food are correct.

Stayed a few times and had 3 nights recently . Good to have parking on site in Topsham. Rooms are warm and comfortable with plenty of space and open access to refreshments and basic breakfast items in a designated area . Staff all friendly and helpful. Would have appreciated a couple of easy chairs as plenty of space for them.
Lots of independent retail places around , good pubs and restaurants ( although the Salutation food is excellent ) and lots of interesting waders around on the estuary and from the hide you can get to round the road from the goat walk .

We had a wonderful stay here, made to feel completely welcome by all the friendly staff we met - from reception through to housekeeping. Lovely rooms with everything you could need including use of a small kitchenette for guests to make tea, coffee and toast! Clean room, comfy bed, lovely bathrooms. Good value, nice they make single guests so welcome with their pricing. Definitely planning to come back.

My husband took me here for lunch as he had previously had a good experience, however the food was mediocre and small portions. I had to send my meal back as the langoustines were overcooked and the new potatoes a little hard. The meal was fine the second time, but my husband had long finished his small seabass fillet (with a mini plant pot of skinny fries that didn't look particularly freshly cooked) by the time my food came. For the prices charged it was a very poor standard. I certainly wont rush back - if you want fresh fish I recommend going to Rockfish instead!

We didn't stay at the Salutation Inn so I cannot answer your question
I would suggest you email the hotel directly on salutation topsham. co.uk as not all hotels look at TripAdvisor regularly. But just to help a little from London you would get train to Exeter and change at St David's or central station and take the exmouth branch line to topsham. The hotel is a five minute walk from the station. I would guesstimate the distance from centre of Exeter is about 8 miles
REGRET No disabled access upstairs. We are a grade 2* listed building which prevents any possibility of providing lift facilities upstairs. Regards and apologies for delay in getting message and my reply - EdW-H
