As a first-time visitor to Malawi, I was happy to accept the offer from Dan & Trish, Ngala’s owners to arrange a local trusted driver to collect me from Lilongwe airport upon my arrival. The service can be arranged with prior notice. The transit took around 4.5 hours along roads that vary from smooth & well maintained to what only could be described as ‘war torn’. My driver expertly avoided the deep un marked holes in the road, worn out crumbled edges and at times taking to the sand at the side of the road being the safest route, I was glad to be in the hands of a local expert. It is not a route to be used at night especially for the novice! Ngala trading post is a busy village full of friendly locals buying and selling their goods. We entered the sandy bumpy side road at the outskirts leading to the entrance of Ngala Beach lodge. Some 500 meters down the lane their gates came into view and opened. With a beaming smile their staff member pointed us to the reception area. My first impression was an oasis of green lush grass bushes and trees. The Thatched building welcomed visitors with an air of tranquility. I was immediately met by happy smiling staff who quickly dealt with my bags administered the minimal paperwork and took me to my room. Once settled in Dan & Trish came to welcome me personally to the lodge which I thought was a nice touch. During my stay I noticed they approached every new visitor and welcomed them to Ngala. This is clearly a top down approach and it shows in the warmth and friendliness of all the staff. I had booked an ‘A’ frame accommodation overlooking lake Malawi. King size bed, separate toilet, shower, more than enough hot water. Plenty of luggage space and an area to hang all your clothes plus two comfy chairs to relax. The A frame has double French doors that look out onto a small patio area with chairs. The room has plenty of power sockets, overhead fan for the hot nights and mosquito net as a standard requirement. The main building has an open plan restaurant overlooking the deck, gardens and lake. There is a comprehensive menu with local fish and meat dishes plus lots more. If you are a pudding fan, I would recommend the Malva pudding a SA dish with a twist on the recipe by Trish. 😊. Food is available all day as is the Ngala breakfast which is a must for those who like a cooked breakfast. The bar overlooks the gardens and lake and provides access to the infinity pool. There is plenty of seating either at the bar or throughout the room and is open from 6am – 22:00 I did my research and there are currently 11 rooms including two family rooms. This makes Ngala something of a rare find in my book. Quite the select retreat. The staff leave you in peace if you want to chill and relax but seem to know when you would like a drink or something to eat. There is a campsite down by the beach at one end of the site & during my stay a few 4x4 vehicles with roof top tents arrived and on one occasion what looked like an ex army lorry with around 10 people made camp. It was great. So many stories of their adventures across Malawi, SA and beyond. There are a few local tours that can be organised but I recommend these are arranged via the lodge and not the locals. Ngala operate a shop on site called Gologolo that sell groceries & local items with proceeds that go to charities. These are verified. I was told not to give money when out on trips! If you really want adventure as I did, you can book an excursion to Likoma Island. The Likoma Express boat operates out of Ngala Beach Lodge a few times a week the lady in the office is called Sam and is very helpful Ngala Beach Lodge is a truly wonderful place to stay, great hosts in Dan and Trish, wonderful friendly staff beautiful & gardens, immaculate beach great food and comfy rooms. What more can I say Thank you!

Experienced the coziest feel while staying at Ngala beach lodge, the Ngala team are friendly and eager to greet, smile and have a chat to you, the food is great and the drinks taste as sweet as the beautiful view over the lake, i do highly recommend trying anything on their menu, from chicken tenders to pizza’s to kampango burgers, everything tastes of excellent cuisine, they do also have a homemade garlic and chilli sauce, do taste it, it’s amazing. It felt like home but only better, a place in Malawi that stole my heart, thanks Ngala beach lodge management and team

The Ngala Beach Lodge is a beautiful place surround by warm-hearted people and a wonderful landscape. The rooms are comfortable and clean. The Service is so friendly and always focused on a solution. Trisha and Dan give us the feeling of coming home:) We enjoy the delicious food that also included the local Chambo-fish! The Team of the Lodge can also organize a boat-trip on the Lake (sometimes you can see hippos;)) or a hiking-tour to the waterfalls. It was an amazing experience! We will come back. Tip: The Ngala Beach Lodge will get this year an Boat-transfer to the Lakomi-island!

We stayed two nights in an A-Frame just up from the beach under the shade of some large trees surrounded by green grass. The beach was immaculately clean (one of the best we’ve seen in some time) and the yellow sand was so incredibly soft! Our room remained cool and breezy at night and with a very comfortable bed we slept soundly. Although the lake was choppy we tried the kayaks for some fun! We found some surprises on the menu such as nachos and tacos and they were excellent. We ordered the tacos three times (fish were the best)!! The campsite was also well organized and something we look forward to trying in the future. Trish and Dan and Paul were very kind and warm hosts making the experience even better. This is a gorgeous property highlighting the beauty of Nkhotakota and we can’t wait to return again and try some other activities they will have available soon. Located only 400m from the M5 tarmac road means it’s extremely easy to access. The northern lakeshore is indeed special and known for being quiet, beautiful and private- we definitely found that here!

November 24th, 2021 Definitively the best experience we had so far ashore the Lake. Camping along the beach, on large grass area and under shady trees, very quiet place, nice swimming pool. The rebuilding of the bar/restaurant is not at all a nuisance. We had diner served at our campsite along the beach ! And most of all, the hosts, Trish & Dan are just wonderful ! Caring about their guests, giving useful information and telling nice stories about Malawi. It’s a 100% for this place.

Back from another trip to Ngala Beach, as usual Trish, Dan and the staff made me feel very welcome. It doesn’t matter whether it is a holiday on my own or with the family, it’s a great place to relax and enjoy the weather, food, beautiful grounds, clean beach and water of the lake. Trish and Dan have invested in many improvements since my last stay including new kayaks and told me they are hoping for a new larger boat for trips on the lake shortly. Pizza night is a must, home made and fresh from the wood burning oven. BBQ’s on the beach. If you haven’t booked for Christmas and New Year and they have space, it’s a great way to spend the holiday season, I would highly recommend you book.
