Travellers' Choice
Carol and Phil Bennett welcome you to our 16th-century thatched inn located in the heart of Hardy's Dorset. We have converted the old skittle alley and function room into four comfortable and stylish bedrooms. After a good night's sleep, you will be set up for the day with a cooked breakfast to your liking. Local ales tapped from the cask, wines by the glass and delicious food.

Warm and friendly welcome. Comfortable rooms. Good food and drink. New owners really making excellent effort. Wish them all the best. They deserve it. We much enjoyed our short stay. Will be back. I know there will be some investment. Can only improve what’s already worth visiting.

Great location, bit out of the way, but in lovely Dorset countryside. Quirky thatched pub with traditional features. Bar and restaurant area was welcoming and the wood burning fire was lit when we arrived due to heavy rain. Good local barrelled beer and tasty well presented evening meal.

"Off the beaten track" and "beyond the back of beyond" might well describe the location - but quiet and attractive -yes. However beware of the rickety stair leading to the front door, the uneven Car Park and the likewise uneven slabs leading to the garden gate. While younger couples might be OK with the giant bath we had in our new annex room, getting in and out for the elderly is not easy - a grab handle over the bath came away in the hand and there was no non-slip mat in the bath. You may gather that areas of the pub need upgrading and need to be made safe for all visitors. Six weeks after our visit my wife still bears the scars of a heavy fall on the steps leading to the garden from the car park. Yes, people were kind and helpful at the time - but sympathy after such an event (with an overnight stay in A&E in Dorchester checking head injuries) means one leaves the Brace of Pheasants with less than happy memories of a place which claims 4 stars for its rating. Concern and good wishes were proved to be synthetic, as a full bill was presented next morning, with no reduction whatsoever, not even for a breakfast not taken. Our extra costs resulting were considerable. We would suggest that other older travellers think at least twice before booking to stay here

One night visit We booked as close to Badger Watch Dorset . The inn exceeded our expectations. Accommodation was very good. Stayed in older part under the thatch but room was clean and modern and well -appointed. A great breakfast served in the breakfast room. Service was fast and accommodating . Off the beaten path but a very enjoyable stay.

I had booked a room originally for my husband and myself as we had a funeral to go to but rang the week before to confirm it would be me on my own. I was still charged the full two-person rate despite flagging up I would be only one person. The manager was unhelpful and simply directed me to talk to Booking.com, which of course is very difficult and extremely expensive. The room itself was lovely and clean and in a beautiful setting, but I have to say I was rather disappointed in these days of Covid that the bed simply had a thin sheet over it with no mattress protector at all. Most hotels put a mattress cover at the very least in order to be hygienic. It was booked as a double bed which was in fact two twin beds zipped together but because the sheet was paper thin, the high ridges of the joining seams were very uncomfortable. With the inbuilt bathroom fans running, emergency lights, and the floodlights outside in the corridor all night it was quite hard to sleep! Still not sure what the high-pitched whining sound was? The breakfast next morning sounded lovely as on the menu it talked about fresh fruit from the table, although they didn’t have a table at all and when the lady next to me asked for a banana she was told ‘no’ and there was no fruit to speak of unless you had the yoghurt with berries. I can’t drink tea or coffee so I asked if I could have a chocolate and was told ‘no’. When I went to check out I waited for almost 5 minutes and in the end just left the key on the bar where it would be seen. This is such a lovely location and with a bit of warmth, good customer service and positivity it would be an absolute oasis.
