Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Me, my partner and my friend came here for a meal. I ordered the half chicken with mashed potato and sweetcorn, while my partner got a gammon steak and my friend got a sirloin steak M-Rare. The chicken was dry and had to be doused in ketchup for me to eat it, and the mash was slightly overcooked. The steak my friend ordered was more well done if anything, however this was not the end of the world as he ate most of it. The gammon was good according to my partner so no issues there. Service was excellent and all the staff there were very welcoming and catered to our needs, especially the gentleman at the podium who showed us to our tables, he was very polite and clearly knew what he was doing.
All in all the food was not great, just OK, however the outside area and service was great, so I would possibly come back here again.

I had a comfortable stay here, mid way through a trip for work to Hull. I often travel solo for work so didn't fancy the 7 hour drive in on stint.
I stayed here on the recommendation of a cousin who lives in Chellaston.
Be weary of the sat nav if you are coming in from the North as it takes you to the back lane. Instead of taking the last turn, stay on the main road and take the next turn on your right, into the carpark.
The carpark is large and easy to find a space, parking is free too which is a huge bonus as there isn't really much around without at least a 10 minute walk.
The staff are warm and welcoming and guide you through the building right up to your door, the explain all the information you need for the stay. Remember to book your breakfast when you check-in.
The bed was very comfortable, one of the best night sleeps I've ever hard while travelling, as I can't really seem to settle well when I'm not at home.
However comfy the bed is, the room is quite dated. It has all the things you'd expect, wardrobe, side tables with lamps and there's a sizeable desk and chair if you like to do work while away. There's a kettle and tea and coffee, basic offerings but welcome after a long drive. The bathroom is reminiscent of a shared dormitory, vinyl floors and walls and the fan is attached to the light so it get's quite loud if you have the bathroom light on for a while; there was a bath, which is a bonus but not required for my stay.
The windows are and old barn style, single glazing with internal locks; the view is magnificent looking over the green Derbyshire fields!
Breakfast was tasty, I eat early so was the first to be seated and offered the menu. It took a while to come out, around 35 minutes and I had the vegetarian full breakfast option which came with toast and juice as well as coffee.
Overall, the room was comfy, suitable for a short stay and affordable. The food was tasty and my stay was pleasing.

I had a cheese and onion pickle sandwich. The baguette slices were small. The grated cheese filler barely covered the bread and was presubly mild cheddar since it would cost less. For £6.75 and a few chips is extortionate. The pickle was OK.

My wife had a 'posh' fish finger sandwich which, she claimed, was oily and the crumb was soggy. I suspect the fish fingers were cooked in a pan that was not hot enough

I’m sorry to hear you didn’t enjoy our sandwich range. The fish is a freshly battered fillet opposed to a breaded finger. And the bloomer bread is generally a thick slice. Please contact me directly to discuss

Me and my Family visited Crewe and Harpur for our first meal out after a long time. It wasn’t too busy that The Staff appeared to be rushed off their feet but enough guests to create a nice atmosphere. We were Served by Katie who took our order with No problems and the young Lady serving drinks on the bar was also very friendly. My burger was delicious and our food came out hot and relatively fast. We will definitely be returning soon. Thanks team!

As a party of twelve, deputy manager, Rich, worked hard to make our evening pleasant.
What seemed beyond his control, despite checking numbers, courses and preferences beforehand, the meal was disappointing.
Too many Turkey meals arrived, too many salmon dishes too. One beef too few, the final meal arrived as the other diners had almost finished eating. Why didn’t we wait?? It was taking far too long and a reminder had to be given to staff behind the bar. Those eleven mains which had arrived were not hot at all in most cases. With twelve diners, three bowls of vegetables would have helped enormously. The veg presented with the meals were a fete accomple, in that piles of carrots were placed on the meat, piles of sprouts arrived with the turkey. No choices suggested before or given later.
Sadly, supposedly identical mains and deserts arrived with vastly differing portion sizes. It may seem rude to mention this, but this factor was impossible to ignore.
Despite all this, I would go again and ask others to try venue. The decor and house style is outstanding. The young staff tried very hard to please, the menu is well priced, the car park is large, all is on ground level, easy access at doorways, and local to us.

We booked a table for Saturday 13th November 2021, there was 6 adult plus a baby. I stressed on the phone that we will have a 2 month old baby with us that will probably sleep through the entire lunch which he did. We were seated in the family area with a play area for other children. My grandson is 2 months old, he was never going to get out of the buggie and play in the play area. As a 55 year old man nothing annoys me more than a screaming child that isn’t mine, we were unfortunate enough to listen to somebody else’s child screaming continuously. Once we were seated Elena who was our serving staff took our drinks order, we asked for a pint of Carling with lime and ended up with a lager top! Elena took our food order and struggled with the tablet and couldn’t find the chicken salad.
Food arrived, is there a shortage of frozen chips in Derbyshire? I had a sirloin stake, with 12 chips! it said it came with salad! Five cherry on an inedible vine is not a salad! It was cooked to my liking but was it worth £14? Nope! One of dinners arrived (think it was chicken and smoked applewood mash) anyway that went back to the kitchen as the food was cold, I had eaten my steak and chips by the time it returned, that’s because the cold dinner was gone for ages and the lunch I had took all of 4 minutes to eat.
We ordered some additional drinks, wow! they took an eternity to arrive, then when they did arrive half a lager and lime was a pint of lager and lime.
Let’s move onto puddings! We ordered 6 deserts! they were absolutely lovely all of them! just a shame they took 30 mins to arrive!
We had an additional family gathering back at home, that was arranged for 3pm, 2 and a half hours was enough for lunch surely!
Let’s pay the bill! Somebody gave me some cash earlier in the day so I wanted to pay part cash and part payment with a card. Again nothing seemed to be straight forward, I felt I was stood at the payment point for far too long.
The reason for the gathering was it was my sister in laws 60th birthday who is a school teacher in Derby, she spends all day 5 days a week with children.
When Elenor seated us we had no idea we were going to be engulfed with other peoples noisy children.
I explained to Elenor when we first met, I reward good service and when I tip staff its because they go the extra mile to provide a memorable service.
I am normally very generous when rewarding service. We live in the village of Hilton 15 mins away.
Our visit to The Crewe and Harpur is memorable, unfortunately not for the right reasons. We won’t be back.

Arrived to a very large but empty pub/ restaurant, not one table had anybody seated at it. We’re told we couldn’t eat inside as they were fully booked and could only eat outside. Having asked if we could eat inside as we didn’t plan on being too long, we were told by something we could only assume was a very scruffy member of staff “No”
It then took an age to get served at the bar due to said scruffy members of staff standing around talking about how busy they pretended they were although the place was still empty.
We were seated outside after spending over £100 on food and drink for it then to start raining and then had to eat our extremely below average food in the cold rain.
It’s worth noting that as we left, the place was still as empty as it was when we arrived and all tables still reminded unoccupied.
Very unhelpful, rude staff, terrible venue, terrible food, slow service. Definitely won’t be returning.

So we pre ordered our food off the Christmas menu. When we get there ( around 6:30 pm) it seemed nice but a little bit loud then we had to order drinks at bar and take them to our table ourselves even though it was table service. After about 45 minutes we are told they cannot do 3/4 of the things that we had pre ordered. So we ended up choosing things off the menu. Waited about another 30 minutes before starters and mains arrived. Table wasn’t clear before mains. I had a burger as my main. Burnt on the outside and dry in the middle. At least the chips were ok. Then at around 9:30 pm we gave up because our desserts we were told would take around 30 minutes to prepare. We ended up being rudely told not to pay but we insisted that we should pay so ended up paying for what we ordered. Went home stressed and in tears. :-(

Party of 10 booked. Guided straight to our table, which was quiet and fairly private and away from the bar. The staff were friendly and helpful with the right amount of interaction. Service was good, waiting time for courses was good as there was time to chat in between but no long wait. We did not feel rushed (we were there over 3 hours due to the occasion). Everyone enjoyed their starter, main and dessert. The lunchtime 2 and 3 course menu meals were just the right size so that we were replete but not "stuffed", and at a great price. We have absolutely no complaints and had a great time. Thank you Clare, Amy, Stella and Tracey.

I stayed here with my 8 year old twins on Halloween and we had a great time. Our room was really large with the old horse stalls still in it which we thought was very exciting. We got a great discount on food for staying there and the breakfasts were particularly good.
