Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We had a lovely peaceful stay in room 2 which overlooks the river. The room is beautifully decorated and presented. We appreciated the little extras such as Nespresso coffee maker and bath robes. There were also plenty of other hot drink options. Breakfast was a simple but tasty, freshly cooked full English, but there was also an option of a bacon roll. Holden House is excellently situated for walks along the canal and there is a pub/restaurant practically next door which was very handy. We would definitely stay again if in the area.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, with the glorious weather helping the make it even better! The host was very friendly making us feel welcome and at home straight away. She gave us the choice of a full english breakfast or having sausage or bacon rolls brought up to our room at a time of our choice. We chose the latter, they were lovely and delivered spot on time. Our room (2), was beautifully decorated, spotlessly clean and has a wonderful view of the Trent. The ensuite bathroom was also spotlessly clean and fitted out with modern sanitary ware and flooring. The property is located right next to the canal which is perfect for a leisurely walk along the towpath. We're visiting relatives in Derbyshire in July and cant wait to return to stay at Holden House, thank you for our lovely stay.

This is the first time we have stayed here and what a gem it is. We chose Room 2 with its view out onto meadows and the fast flowing river Trent. Room 2 is very well presented with lovely decor and ample tea/coffee making facilities. The en-suite shower room was immaculate and every sort of toiletries etc were available. The freshly cooked full-English was perfect. The evening of our stay we ate at The Clock Warehouse some 200 yards away and situated alongside the Trent and Mersey Canal. Great food there too. Worth booking which can be done online. Thank you for a great stay and we will hopefully be back one day.

My second visit felt like I was coming home. Friendly spotless place. Pub with good food very close by. Great value for what one gets. Village itself is nice, only thing I struggle with is car noise, but I believe not all the rooms are facing main road.

Beware the black cat of the next door neighbour. I only tried to stroke it on the head then all of a sudden it turned viscious I just got a scratch then ran away. But it does not run away like 99% of cats it just sits there encouraging you. So today extreme heat warning is why I did not book the very expensive prices here.

We had a fantastic five night stay at Holden House last week. The owners are lovely people and can't do enough for you. Correspondence with my wife before our stay was excellent and during our stay they made sure everything went well. The location was perfect for bus stops, the canal walk, pubs and restaurants. Holden House is decorated nicely and you can tell it is really well looked after. The room was absolutely spotless as was the ensuite. A very comfortable bed made for a well needed good night's sleep and the shower was nice and powerful. The breakfast rolls in the morning more than made up for the lack of a full breakfast, I've missed them since we left! Thanks for making our stay so enjoyable, hopefully we'll be back again at some point.

We usually stay in the king size room at the back of the house. Lovely room, comfy bed and a great view of the river. No breakfast being served but they will give you a breakfast roll. Shardlow is very pretty with a lot of pubs and restaurants considering the size of the village.

The hosts were brilliant, really welcoming and lovely people. The room was immaculate and the breakfast roll in the morning was spot on! I left my charger and the they even dropped it off to me where our boat was moored. Would defiantly stay again
