Cortijo Prado Toro is situated in the Natural Park of the Alpujarras , on the southern slopes of the National Park of the Sierra Nevada, Spains highest and most dramatic mountain range in the province of Granada. The historic white villages of "La Taha" are within easy reach. The main town of the Taha, Pitres, is less than 10 min away by car. The Cortijo (country house) faces south, towards the Mediterranean, at an altitude of 1.450M, opening up breathtaking views of unspoiled natural countryside. On clear days even extending to the Rif mountains of North Africa. Cortijo Prado Toro is a delightful quiet place set amidst stunning country side. Hidden courtyards and patios provide sanctuaries of shade and greenery, whilst secluded terraced corners offer privacy in the sun. Weeping branches of mature willow trees form bowers of tranquility, and the gentle murmer of a spring or fountain never seems far away. Only birdsong or the muted clanging of distant goat bells is likely to disturb the silence of this quiet mountain retreat. The architecture of the buildings, designed and restaured with the help of "Donald Gray", an authority in traditional Andalusian architecture, is in the traditional Alpujarran style with much care taken on the detail. The individually designed and decorated apartments, all separated from eachother to provide absolute privacy , are all furnished to a high standard and combine simplicity and luxury with elegance of another era.

Had an amazing stay, such a tranquil location with great hiking on the doorstep, beautiful accommodation, the attention to detail everywhere is very impressive. A great destination if you really want to get away from it all, the area is really incredible, fantastic views everywhere you look.

After beautiful cities in Spain and specially Andalusie we choose for this location to relax and to enjoy the silence which is great. The nice Cynthia runs on a beautiful location the Cortijo uphill Pitres ( 1300 mtr). Last 2 km unpaved road ; what you see then is all beauty. Nice appartements with garden view or ( and If possible do it!!!) take the penthouse like we did. It's Perfect location with view over the mountains and beautiful sunrise view. The appartment has a nice livingroom with good bed , nice kitchen with magnetron/combi and all neceserry things. Bathroom with bath. There is a swimmmingpool which has water from the mountains so a bit cold but beautiful. Also for hikers fabulous place to stay because appartements are next to the GR 7 Path. We did several walks with information and map we got from Cynthia. Don't forget: we also did the beautiful walk Taha de Pitres. It's like a fairytale, walking through 7 villages connecties to each other by paths. Paths are/were used for transport by mules. After a lovely stay cynthia gave us a bag with walnuts from the tree in the garden. Thank you Cynthia for this great stay, we loved it!!!

We went for three nights and had a wonderful stay. Ludde is a good host. leaves his guest alone but available for questions when necessary. The only suggestion we have is to add a sign for reception or indicate where to go to get the keys. We searched the place and ended up disturbing one of the other guests to find the place to pick up the keys. The hiking in the area was perfect for us, not so experienced hikings with kids. Lots of trails. We would certainly come back if we are near Alpujarras again

The rooms are very simple and have private terraces. The pool is in a stunning setting and large enough for a refreshing swim and quite deep so you can swim properly. It's one of the few places which is truely peaceful and quite delightful! Great access to lots of walks or for running. The local villages are close and truely unspoilt.

As one drives the road/lane up the mountain to Prado Toro one begins to question where and why someone would actually build up here. But upon arriving one finds this beautiful quiet spot, isolated in the hills with views south across the mountains. The only problem is it is hard to look beyond the property given the attractive stone building and the gorgeous manicured grounds with endless colourful flowers. Ludet, who purchased the land and built the Cortijo, is a wealth of information about the area, what to do, where to hike, where to eat etc. Our apartment El Patio was very comfortable with a large living room, fireplace and a very functional kitchen. The beautiful hand-made (personally by Ludet) furniture suits the rooms perfectly. WiFi was inconsistent in our room but Ludet directed us to another alcove closer to the router where there was reliable reception. As meals are not served here one has to either make them or take a drive to one of the nearby villages. Ludet’s suggestions, first Tiede in Bubion and then Meson La Fragua in the ham curing capital of Spain, Trevelez were both appreciated – serving very good Spanish meals. Having purchased supplies we enjoyed nice breakfasts on our private patio just outside our room. There is a large pool on the property that no doubt is welcome in the heat of the summer but not during our visit in May. The property is literally adjacent to the GR-7 hiking trail as it passes through this area of Andalucia for those who wish to hike through the picturesque countryside. Beyond hiking there is not much to do here – but that is the beauty of Cortijo Prado Toro – for those who want to get out in the fresh air, enjoy a quiet property that is soothing on the eye for good value this is your place.

An amazing situation with wonderful views. Fabulous for walking and access to the scenic villages. Accommodation very comfortable with gorgeous touches like the wooden furniture. I didn't expect to be spending much time around the house as I expected to be walking extensively and daily. However, my husband became seriously ill during a walk. Desperate, I phoned Ludet who immediately drove to rescue us and drive us to the emergency room. He translated to the medics and stayed around to make sure we were ok. He was amazing - going far beyond the call of duty to make sure we were ok and after his release from hospital, making sure we were comfortable in our accommodation. Could never thank him enough. Would very much like to return to explore the region as planned. Until next time...

This is an extraordinary place! It is a destination in itself! The most beautiful place we stayed during our two weeks in Southern Spain. The room, the setting exceeded our high expectations. The grounds are like a botanical garden. The owners built this property themselves, using traditional designs and materials. Our room had a patio with a view to the south. In the morning we could see the distant outline of the mountains of Morocco! Roses and other flowers were in bloom. We took a beautiful hike up a water course and down through massive chestnut trees into a the village of Pitres. It was quiet and the air was crystal clear. LuDec, the owner, was welcoming, friendly and very helpful. My wife and I felt we could have stayed much longer. Take the drive slowly, stay to the right, and when you get there, you will be very thankful that you made the journey. And like us, you won't want to leave.

We spent 2 days/nights in Cortijo Prado Toro. This was the final part of our Spain trip and it was planned to be the relaxing part and it definitely was. These are very large rooms ours had a dining area, living room, kitchen and two bedrooms/bathrooms. The kitchen and living room area both had fireplaces. The floor was also heated, it was a little cool here at night but the temperature inside was perfect. The kitchen has refrigerator/ oven/ stovetop/ along with utensils and dishes. The property grounds are very well maintained, there is a pool and also plenty of hiking trails. Also, there are many small towns near here for short drives or long hikes. Remember to stop and bring food/drink before you come up here, there is a supermarket in Pitres a few miles away.

Our second time here and it just keeps getting better! I must warn that this is not a hotel- don't expect 5 star service but do expect beautiful settings, fabulous corners in the grounds to explore, wonderful walks starting from behind the pool, friendly help from Ludet the owner and a million other things that makes this one of my favourite places in Spain to stay. Take note of all the places that Ludet recommends: he is 100% accurate with restaurants and walks so do as he says! Recommended: the studio apartment. Things to improve: heating system (was boiling and we had hot days) and bed could be more comfortable. Saying that, please don't be put off as you'll be missing out on a fantastic place.

We happened upon the Alpujarras after reading ‘Driving Over Lemons’, and just had to get out there to experience it for ourselves! This was 5 years ago and we haven’t holidayed anywhere else since. We totally fell under its spell and have had the most immense fun experiencing the differing landscapes and accommodations on offer. We decided last year that our particular favourite areas are ‘La Taha’ and the ‘Poqueira Gorge’ and remembered (whilst on a ramble, high up on the forestry track) that we’d seen a stone sign for a ‘Cortijo Prado Toro’. This surely couldn’t be a ‘holiday cortijo’ or most ‘perfect mountain retreat’... could it? Well....we are very happy to tell you that it is. Having spent the majority of our very precious 5 week holiday entitlement in the Alpujarras over the last 5 years we’ve stayed in a variety of both B&B and Self Catering accommodations, with varying reviews, but knew we hadn’t found that ‘special’ place. So, having ‘Googled’ Prado Toro and thrilled to see it actually was S.C. accommodation, we eagerly booked our next adventure! Where do I start? We rented El Atico (with the huge roof terrace). We arrived just before midnight, but Ludet had left the exterior light on, and the under floor heating on to welcome us. You know when you see photo’s of places and you think ‘wow, that’s lovely’ only to arrive to be bitterly disappointed...this is the first place we’ve EVER stayed where yes, the photo’s are fab but the reality is (unbelievably) simply breathtaking! The craftsmanship and materials used are second to none. The positioning and screening of each apartment has been very well thought out and very cleverly executed to make you think that you are the only ones there. The views and location are simply breathtaking. Ludet and family work hard to maintain this fantastic standard. Their love and commitment to maintain this paradise can be felt and seen everywhere. Their enthusiasm to share their extensive knowledge of the area and walks is so refreshing. It appeared nothing was too much trouble! We like being ‘remote’, but even if you don’t, within 10mins (by car) you’re back in civilisation. We’re thrilled to have found our ‘special place’. Go on...give it a go...it might just be yours too!
