The Studio is a unique accommodation set in the beautiful coastal hills of West Lombok. The three villas are lovingly restored Javanese joglo and limasan structures, featuring antique carved panels and open-to-sky verandahs and galleys. Guests at The Studio can either have the luxury of complete privacy in this hill-retreat, hidden away behind the giant, shady fig tree, or the experience of meeting the local family. Villa Laras and the two Studios, along with the whole complex, have adopted sustainable design principles, including passive cooling, rain-water harvesting, low-energy appliances, solar power and use of recycled timber throughout. One hour drive from the airport, and five minutes to the beach and the restaurants, cafes and entertainment of Senggigi. This location is perfect for a getaway holiday, walks on the hill, peace and quiet. Wake each morning to the sound of birdsong and the view of sunshine sparkling on the ocean.

This is a lovely villa, up in the hills with a beautiful pool. Lovely communal areas for relaxing and watching the beautiful sunsets. The views are stunning. The staff were incredibly welcoming. It was easy to get Grabs to and from the villa and we did a great day tour to the North of the island to visit the waterfalls. The owner was very good at giving advice. Oh, and the fridge was well stocked with cold beers!

Just an FYI, if you book the whole villa (4 bedrooms) you will be charged for breakfasts for any more than 2 pax. We found this strange and checked it with the owner, who explained that it was their policy. It isn't much extra, but worth noting.

We stayed in Villa Laras for the weekend. Greeted on arrival by smiling staff holding fresh coconuts for us and a large vase of tropical flowers picked from the garden - I wonderful welcome! The villa is very homely and comfortable, lots of areas for sitting and admiring the views. Semi-outdoor bathrooms make a unique experience, there’s something very special about showering at night underneath twinkling stars. Gardens are glorious and provided lots of space for my active 3 year old to play. She particularly enjoyed the trampoline. My husband and I loved sunset swims and the views from the garden and upstairs gallery. A truly magnificent location.

We had a wonderful getaway at the Studio. Amazing service and location, with lovely views over the Lombok coast, and only a short drive down to the tourist strip and beach. Highly recommended and would definitely stay again.

It is true that the villa is far away and secluded from outside life. However, this becomes a threat as you will need to be careful at night as the villa is exposed to potential danger. Our 3-bedroom villa was broken-into on the 2nd night and our valuables were stolen.
We hope that security could be tightened to ensure that other guests will not be as unfortunate as us. Lock all doors at night!

Thanks for your comments. We are indeed also very disappointed about what happened. What readers need to know is that this is the first and only time in the history of the Studio that a break-in or theft has occurred. Our villa management and staff team took the situation very seriously. We extended free accommodation to the guests while the matter was sorted. We accompanied the guests to the police to report the theft and extended every courtesy throughout. Readers should also be aware that guests are advised to lock doors and use the safety deposit box provided. Unfortunately on this occasion these precautions were not taken by the guests. As a result of this very unfortunate incident, we have increased security in the Studio. We also continue to follow up on this particular incident by using our strong links within the local community to try and identify the thieves. We hope that future guests will not be deterred by this incident. It is good to be aware of risks wherever one stays in the world.

I selected Studio Villa, The Hill, Batu Layar, Lombok for an extended stay, commencing in December 2012. My purpose was to study and photograph the local birds and butterflies. The Studio is located at 100 metres above sea level, and is set in several hectares of original forest, interspersed with a tropical garden planted with mango trees, palm trees, etc and with beautiful views down to the sea where the sun sets over the Gunung Agung volcano in Bali, (when it is not raining of course, in the musim hujan (rainy season)).

My inspiration was to follow in the illustrious footsteps of Wallace, whose six-year voyage of discovery through Indonesia, 150 years ago, led to the Wallace Line separating the flora and fauna of Asia from Australia. It was fascinating to read his book and simultaneously to search for bird and butterfly species, a couple of which he had been the first to discover. December is a good month for butterflies and I eventually photographed and identified 37 species. Well, imagine my surprise when the owl I observed every evening was announced as a new world wide bird species from Lombok, the Rinjani Scops Owl in Jan. 2013!

The Studio Villa is a traditional, old Javanese joglo reconstructed in Lombok. With antique Javanese furniture, low-energy appliances, modern fittings and basic comforts, it is ideal for those who want to reconnect to nature. An excellent (ionization - low chlorine) swimming pool is shared at the main villa with the owners, who welcome kindred spirit guests as extended members of the family.

Thanks for this review. It was a pleasure having you to stay. The Studio is indeed a wonderful place for bird-watchers. With the verandas and open gallery it is almost like a giant live-in bird hide! The discovery of the newly identified Rinjani Scops Owl in our garden was a real high point. We hope to see you again!

We stayed here in two villas for two nights in September 2014. One group had the three bedroom villa and on group had the two bedroom villa. The villa is nicely furnished and the kitchen is well equipped. Drinking water is provided as well.

One downside to the villas is the bathroom. There is only one in each villa. Only the master-bedroom has air-conditioning. The other rooms had to make do with fans. Mosquito nets are provided. In the three bedroom villas, there were ants in the kitchen - small black ones and several big red ones too. One of our group saw a small rat /mice in the kitchen (although none of us saw any).

It is not possible to walk from the villas to the main road or to the beach as its too far away. Breakfast is a simple affair with one egg, toasts coffee or tea. No lunch menu is available. Dinner needs to be arranged in advance - the staff will cook a bbq for you. The dinner is served in a open area next to the pool. We had two nights of great food at The Studio. The staff is friendly and helpful. But there is no call bell. When you finish eating, you just leave the everything at the table and staff will come round the next morning to clear up.

Wifi is slow when everyone logs on as expected. No telephone in the villa and calling for staff entails a walk to the main building.

All in all a great three days for us. Would I come back here again, not likely - simply because there is no easy access to the main road or the beach.

Thank you for your review. It is always good to receive constructive feedback. We strive to continually improve our service. As you noted, the Studio is not located on the beach. It is a five minute drive (taxis available) and is located in secluded, green foothills with beautiful views down the valley and over the water towards Bali. The Studio is a private villa complex and not a hotel. So, while room service is not available, we do offer a lunch and dinner menu. Guests order in advance from our menu of delicious home cooked meals. We pride ourselves on the simple, healthy breakfasts. It is definitely not a buffet, hotel-style breakfast, but we do provide home-made jams and juices (made often from fruit grown on the property), local coffee, freshly ground and brewed, or local teas, plus eggs and toast made to order. The Studio is an eco-friendly accommodation. This means there will be ants about and, from time-to-time, tree frogs, geckos, and even bush shrews (sometimes mistaken for mice). The garden is full of butterflies and birds (we have a resident Rinjani Scops Owl along with bul-buls, sunbirds, kingfishers and many more). By maintaining the naturally landscaped garden free of poisons and chemicals, we attract wildlife, so guests must expect this. We are also low impact, which means we use low-energy appliances and we don't provide air-con in all rooms. We find that guests generally enjoy the fresh air and cool evening breezes. All of this is explained on the website and would have been explained to your group leader. Our accommodation has been described as 'a natural touch of luxury'. We do hope that you will visit us again. But if you prefer a more standard hotel-type holiday, that's also fine! Once again thank you for your comments. Much appreciated. All the best!

If you travel to Lombok you must try this traditional 'joglo' which the hosts brought over from Java and reconstructed piece by piece as Studio 1. Designed to capture sea breezes, this delightful accommodation provides everything you need for a holiday, including a fully equipped kitchen, use of the infinity pool, ensuite bathroom, and friendly staff. Mark and Sopan are consummate hosts and their environmentally friendly approach to the design of the main house and 2 studios and gardens is remarkable.
The views are stunning, the atmosphere is relaxing, and you can hide yourself away from the rest of the world if you want to. But if you don't, you are still close to lots of other activities provided in Sengiggi.
Highly recommended.

Thanks so much for the feedback. We have been very serious about developing the Studio as an ecofriendly accommodation. everything, from the use of local materials, recycled timber and furniture, through to solar pool pump, passive cooling and low energy appliances reflects this vision. We have also created a natural garden with bird refuge and now we even have an environmental trail for the kids! Hope you will come and see us again!

We were looking for a relaxing holiday in a beautiful setting, and we certainly found it, high in the hills above Senggigi with a view towards Bali and the huge Agung volcano. The accommodation is spacious, comfortable and superbly relaxing, so much so that we were seldom tempted to venture out. But we were tempted out of bed each morning by Ibu Rus's breakfasts: they were such a special treat. The pool was a great spot for cooling off. The whole property is beautifully maintained and spotlessly clean. The staff looked after us amazingly well, and with so much warmth and friendliness. We can recommend The Studio unreservedly.

We had a fantastic few weeks on Lombok and staying at The Studio was a highlight. The setting is beautiful, quiet and just a little bit cooler than the coast. The staff live on site and are very caring and helpful, ensuring that we could connect with mote of the "real" Lombok as well as the tourist aspects.

Thanks so much for your review. Its always great to hear from our guests. Definitely the Studio is quieter and a little cooler than the coast. It is carefully designed to make the most of not only the views, but the breezes. The Studios use a passive cooling approach, enhanced through use of recycled timber, white painted walls, green planting and flow through air circulation. All good in theory - and great to hear that guests notice the difference. We also benefit from being away from the heat of the beach, too, though its only a short drive away. Thanks - hope you can come and stay again!

Hi Jeanette, All three accommodations have air-conditioning in the main bedrooms, with fans in guest rooms. The main living spaces are passively cooled with flow-through air. The Studio is designed to be sustainable and ecofriendly. Guests find the cooling system to be fine! When are you thinking of coming to Lombok? Best wishes, Mark
