the website makes this place look so luxurious but the reality is the opposite. it's a basic B&B type of hotel that is desperately in need of refurbishment . when we arrived we were met by Alex who was very helpful and proactive in explaining about the car park (which was on the website and also the check in time is on the website and on booking.com) it was sadly not as beautiful as the website.bearing in mind the age of the property I can overlook the uneven floors and some of the corridor noise but the room was a big let down . the bathroom was shocking - dirty and needs renovating (see photos) and the bedroom needs tending to as well. the carpet is badly laid and there were plenty of scuff marks.the light switch looks dodgy.the amenities in the bathroom included one half used shampoo and 3 other little things (see photos) the website describes this room as a king size but it was only a double bed . we were in room 6 and have a king size bed at home so I know the difference ! I have to say the bed was absolutely lovely and very comfortable and the decor in the sleeping half was very pleasant - the website advertises continental in room breakfast but to our surprise we were told that full English would be available in the morning ( a bonus) the corridor carpets are dreadful and need replacing - the downstairs gents toilet is shocking too. the door is a bifold wooden one with 2 broken hinges and the toilet seat has a broken wooden seat . there was no lock on the main toilet door either.the flush handle was broken too. the restaurant area is grubby and felt dirty too and there were patches of damp on the walls. the cooked breakfast was very nice and I cant fault that (apparently cooked by Alex too) the place in my opinion needs closing down and renovating before it reopens again ..such a shame as it's in an ideal location....

I have to agree with the recent reviews. We are staying in their best room. I hate to think what is their worst. A recent review of our room references the TV not working - it still doesn’t. Curtains hanging off the rails - they are still hanging off. Room full of dust. Bar not opened on Saturday evening. It was open Friday evening but we were not made to feel welcome at all and told at 11pm we had to leave and take our drinks to our room. We paid for breakfast - cornflakes with tiny cartons of milk and juice and a toffee yogurt to eat in our room is not a continental breakfast. Like others the “hotel” appeared closed when we arrived. We had called ahead when booking to be advised there would be sharing platters available in the restaurant. There is no restaurant- surely a phone call to alert us? We were just given an envelope with keys and left as they were busy preparing for a BBQ elsewhere. Honestly do not bother. They clearly do not care at all.

We stayed at this hotel on the 22nd October via booking.com. It is located in a small village of Axbridge approximately 8 minutes drive from Cheddar Gorge. The communication from the staff prior to setting off was excellent as my wife is disabled and has limited mobility. They advised us that there was no lift in the building and one flight of stair but the walk to our rooms was no more then 6 meters in total from the front door to the room, which we could cope with. They also informed us that there was disabled parking in the square but this was only short stay. They also mentioned that the restaurant would be closed and no staff onsite as we were arriving after 4pm on a Sunday. Also included in the communication was how to enter the property and were to find the keys to the rooms we had booked. When we arrived, we were early and the lady at reception kindly rushed the staff to make our rooms ready and gave us the keys. The rooms contained large double beds, an en-suite bathroom, tea/coffee facilities and a mini fridge containing a complete continental breakfast with water and juice. The village is picturesque and steeped in history, the buildings were amazing and the Church bells were very vocal as it was Sunday. We chose to visit the Lamb Inn for an evening meal which is a must!! and we discovered free overnight parking just behind the co-op store in the village. The hotel does need a little refurbishing and this had been started. However, a professional painter needs to be employed as the quality of the workmanship leaves a lot to be desired. But considering how hard hotels were hit financially over the Covid lockdown I'm sure once they make some money those improvements will happen. Ultimately, it was a perfect stay, in comfy beds, in a beautiful and really convenient location. Thank you for making things so easy.

Just nasty in general. I wish I’d read the reviews and not looked at the first couple of pictures. I can’t believe that there are any positive reviews. It’s just not possible to put something positive unless you were getting it for free, even then I’m not sure. Dirty, just dirty. The cleanest surface was the porcelain bowl of the toilet. I made the mistake of touching something I thought was a stain only to find it was something festering on the sheets.

My family and I stayed here for 1 night exploring the area on a little road trip!! We booked this as it looked lovely and before some of the worse reviews! The booking included bed and breakfast - a few days after I received an email to say during the week a continental Breakfast was brought to the room including muffins pastries and porridge. On arrival we were left an envelope including the keys, and a note to say that breakfast was already included in the room - which was three porridge pots - just boil the kettle and there you go you have porridge - not appropriate- full of additives and not a breakfast or what i was lead to believe at the time of booking. The note also said if you wanted anything else staff would be around after 11am - which incidentally was the check out time!!! And by 11am I would be very hungry and not pleasant to anyone that may have hindered me of a breakfast!!! We saw no staff during our stay - surely this is a H&s issue - on the fire exit door there were exposed wires poking through - this was a hazard and a child could have touched these! Very poor for what was paid!!

I gave this hotel one star as I was unable to give it no stars! I booked an afternoon tea for my disabled daughter for today. It is her birthday and she loves to go for a full afternoon tea. She was so excited and dressed up to look beautiful. My son is also disabled and a wheelchair user. We arrived at the appointed time to find a note on the door, 'closed for a private function'. The barman said 'didn't you get our email we sent today'! No, I didn't! We had been out for a couple of hours doing birthday things. My daughter was devastated and my son upset. There was no explanation as to why they had cancelled. I checked my emails when I got home and there was an email just saying they could not accommodate us and we could re book and they would give us a glass of prosecco! Well strangely enough my daughters birthday is today, not any other day. Thank you for ruining it and no, I would never come to your hotel.

Hard to know how to describe how disappointed we were with this hotel. To summarise on arrival we were told there was no longer a hot breakfast supplied which we had paid for..a muffin and a pot of dried porridge and bottle of juice we're left in our rooms. When we complained we were were then told there would no restaurant open and the hotel shutting at 8pm. The rooms were shabby bathrooms mouldy. We were booked fo 3 night stay, decided to leave the next morning. In the morning we realised the hotel had been left with no staff overnight we tried to check out but the place was left still with nobody there. A health and safety risk I'm sure. We moved to another hotel and the only good thing I can say about Oak House is the beds were comfortable.

Unfortunately I have no choice but to leave a bad review of this hotel. I feel its only fair to warn others about it! We stayed here for 2 nights and encountered quite a few problems. Most of which we would over look, but the main concern was there was a 'fun fair' and carnival on for the duration of our stay. We were not informed of this at booking or when I emailed the hotel before our arrival. One of the main roads was closed during our stay and this made it difficult to access etc. We could not locate the hotel at first as it was completely covered by a fairground ride. This also made it dark inside and you could not see out of the windows! We of course spoke to different workers at the hotel and told them how upset we were. Mainly that there was no prewarning and we were unable to park near hotel! Plus the noise was extremely loud until 11pm on the Saturday night! There was no apology or any compensation for our awful stay. It was honestly a waste of money. The church next to the hotel was also vandalised by young people from the fair during our stay. It's seems such an odd place to put a fun fair as such a small town square. Why not in one of the neighbouring fields. One of the workers did say that next year they would make sure to let guests know of the fair before they arrive. Apparently the fun fair runs at this time every year. Anyway the breakfast was nice and our room was very shabby chick but pleasant. Overall a poor experience.

Dreadful place, can't call it a hotel, an Airbnb, a pub or a restaurant, because it's none of those. Arrived about 3.20 pm and everything was locked up. Used the intercom to try and gain access as I was standing outside in the wind and rain, to be told check in was 4 pm and I should have been told that in my confirmation email, which I wasn't. Said he'd be right there. Waited. Buzzed again and this time a woman said she'd be there in seconds. Waited and waited and a couple came out and so I went in to get out of the rain and wind. I was greeted by a plastic bin balanced on a leather sofa catching drips from the ceiling. The guy turned up and said his staff should have told me about 4 pm check in, gave me the key and told me where the room was - no offer to help with luggage. We took our suitcases up filthy stairs to our room and were appalled at the stale smell, chipped furniture, curtains hanging off the rails etc and looked nothing like the photo on their website! I went back downstairs and asked if he had a better room. He acted upset, said it was their best room and bridal suite and he'd never had complaints before - most definitely not true if you read the comments on Tripadvisor. We decided 'oh well, it's just one night'. Came back and enquired what time breakfast was. We were told by a young woman that it was continental breakfast and it was already in our room. No it wasn't, only instant porridge pots and no capsules for the coffee maker, so she brought us up 2 pastries and some capsules. We went out for a walk and coffee at The Lamb, it was dark and raining so we went back to watch some TV, but guess what, the picture was all fractured on all channels and wasn't watchable at all. My husband phoned down to the young woman who said she couldn't do anything about it - no 'let me come and have a look', I'll call someone out', or 'I can move you to another room', just 'I don't give a dam' basically. We had had enough and decided to leave. My husband had to drive 2 hours and 20 minutes in the dark and he's 71. We arrived home at 9.20 pm completely exhausted. Just do not book into this place. It's not fit for purpose, doesn't care about you and is a complete waste of time. Read the other comments on Trip Advisor, I wish we had! The 4.5* is completely misleading.

No evening restaurant or bar available. Disappointing, but the Lamb across the square was a very good alternative. The room was acceptable - just. The condition of the bathroom shower was extremely poor, with grouting cracked, broken and with large gaps. Breakfast service was no longer available although we had already included and paid for this. To call what we found in our room a continental breakfast - 2 porridge pots; 2 juice bottles and 2 muffins - was a disgrace. No explanation was given and no front of house staff were available overnight or in the morning. A housekeeper may have been available.
