Excellent place for a family group with an age range of 2 to 89. We loved the fact that all the rooms were available with double beds - in most places there are always one or two couples who end up with the twin beds! The private games room was great fun - our family group of 12 is not exactly quiet, so we love to have our own space where we're not disturbing anyone else. Very well appointed, lovely showers, enough room to seat everyone in the lounge and round the table. Well equipped kitchen - only one suggestion - a 2nd fridge in the utility area? It was a bit tight to fit all our food and drinks in and if we'd been there for longer we would have struggled.

Hi Karen Appreciate the lovely review. We have taken your comment on board regarding the fridge and have now added a new large American style fridge freezer into the utility area. So the cottage now has two fridge freezers. Hope to see you again and thankyou for coming to stay with us

Stayed in the farm house as a group of 12, and our four legged friends also. Gemma was great when we arrived, showed me around the cottage and explained how everything worked and where things were. Also told me they were contactable should we need anything during our stay. The farm house was amazing, clean, welcoming and very spacious for all our needs. We lost the younger adults to the games room, great space for us all to use. The dogs loved a ball throw in the field. Would highly recommend a stay here.

Excellent communication throughout booking process and everything was made very easy for a large group booking. We were upgraded last minute to a larger lodge that was more accommodating to our party size. This was greatly appreciated , especially at no extra cost. All facilities in the lodge were of the highest standard including utensils, toiletries etc. Everyone commented that they had comfortable sleeps also. The automatic gate was very easily accessible and the surrounding area was lovely also. Shops very nearby and clear driving directions sent prior to arrival were very beneficial. Would definitely stay again , thank you for having us!

We stayed in Cloven Stone and had a fabulous time! The children loved the 'upside down' layout with the 2 en suite bedrooms on the ground floor and the cosy living area and kitchen/ dining room on top. We relaxed immediately enjoying the hot tub looking out across a beautiful view. We were delighted with the bottle of champagne, box of biscuits and local chocolates and the games room where we spent an hour or so playing table tennis, pool and table football and then borrowing some board games to play back at the house. We also took advantage of one of the walking routes in the cottage information pack, enjoying the forest stomp to Caldbeck and being rewarded by a warm welcome and hearty meal at the Oddfellows pub. We'd also recommend a day trip to Lanercost Priory and Birdoswald Roman Fort on Hadrian's Wall.

Fisher Gill - one bed The cottage is impeccably appointed and clean, great wifi, lovely wood burner, good central heating, functional 'cottage' furniture, well appointed kitchen (not sure what brand of coffee machine it was but it didn't take Nespresso capsules, lucky I had grounds as well) and a lovely hot tub (with a but to follow!). Lovely champagne and chocolates on arrival. That gets 4 stars. Weak points - bed was small and mattress very soft for me. The one bedroom cottage it seems are right next to a surprisingly busy road. It degrades the hot tub experience. At night we couldn't sleep with the window open (not frequent enough to be white noise). They can't move the building, but be aware if you are noise sensitive. Lastly location: let me explain that I 'won' this break in a raffle, so there was no research or prior choice. Please be aware that these cottage are a couple of miles outside the northern edge of the Lake District National Park. It is around 30minutes drive to the more central northern Lake District and an hour to Windermere. There are some nice country walks from the cottage, once you have got off that nasty road (B5305 - rat run to Penrith?), and a nice cafe in Caldbeck. We didn't try the pub as didn't want to walk back on the road or cross country in the dark. Be aware the "cottage" is really a "barn conversion", ie there is another 'cottage' above Fisher Gill. We were lucky, they were quiet. Overall only 3 starts for me

Our Family of 12 stayed at The Farmhouse, Sebergham, near Caldbeck, Monkhouse Hill Cottages. We hired it for a special Family Birthday, with a mixture of ages. 6 Children ranging from 2,8,10,11 and 16. All the Children and Adults loved the games room and the Hot tub was a favourite with everybody. Absolutely fantastic accommodation with amazing views over the Countryside and Skiddaw Mountain, the Farmhouse was beautiful, exceptionally clean everything felt brand new. The property had everything a family of 12 could need in terms of crockery utensils. Kitchen was excellent. Plenty of space for the whole family to eat together. The Bathrooms were immaculate very stylish and modern, everything was pristine. 30 minute drive to Keswick for a change of scene, though everyone wanted to get back to The Hot tub and Games room. Property and grounds were very private not overlooked. Good Barbecue. Overall a perfect place to have a holiday with Family or Friends. Would highly recommend and we all said we would Love to return. Host was very helpful and ensured everything was perfect. Thank you for a fabulous stay Gemma

We stayed in the Great Calva cottage. It was a fantastic week away. The staff were very friendly, the facilities were great (the kids loved the games room and we loved the hot tub and sauna). Large communal areas in the kitchen, living room and outside meant we could all get together for food, games and general chit chat. The property is close to the northern lakes, about a 20min drive from Keswick and also from Carlisle. There was ample parking for our 4 vehicles and we were able to get a couple of tesco deliveries without any trouble. There was space in 2 fridge freezers for all our food for the week, though we did also plan an initial shop and an intermediate shop halfway through the week. Had we bought everything all at once, we may have struggled to keep all the food for 10 people for a week refrigerated. Overall this was an excellent venue, we would recommend it to people and would be happy to visit again ourselves.

We had a lovely stay at Mickle Rigg cottage in May 2023. The cottage was cosy but fitted out to a very high standard and had everything we needed. The cottage had a lovely big terrace with seating and hot tub and we were able to enjoy the lovely weather. Our dog was made to feel very welcome and enjoyed the garden and surrounding fields. The cottages are set in a beautiful area and we really enjoyed the traffic-free 20-25 minute drive down to the northern lakes at Keswick, Blencathra and Skiddaw. We’ve stayed closer to Windermere/Ambleside in the past but preferred the peace at Monkhouse, even if it meant a longer drive.

Beautiful setting, excellent cottage all you would need for a stay. The hot tub was gorgeous even in November. Lovely welcome. Didn’t use all the facilities on offer , pool room/table tennis or spa located 5 miles away. We just wanted a quiet relaxing weekend abd it was perfect.

There is a review on here from 2017 entitled Great place unless you dare to complain. Well, you can say that again. The place is run by Steve and Gemma who are a disgrace to the hospitality business. Steve in particular, is a nasty piece of work. I will choose my words very carefully but he is an aggressive bully who uses threats of violence as a FIRST response. "I'll smash your head into the floor, old man" was one of the responses I received. I am indeed a very old man who is recovering from two broken arms caused by a fall. When we arrived our accommodation had one double bed and I requested twin beds because of my condition. The young lady who checked us in showed us two acceptable alternatives but then came back to us to say that the owners did not want to let these to us and would only offer us an upgrade for an extra £100. This booking had been made through a company called D & G Fundraising and was a replacement for an item bought in a charity auction which was no longer available. I had wanted to discuss the situation with D & G who have been splendid throughout but Steve came in with all gins biasing, saying that they did not make any money from D & G bookings and I could either pay the £100 straight away or we had 10 minutes to pack our bags and leave. Because of this attitude my instinct was indeed to find somewhere else but it was late at night, in the middle of nowhere and Steve made it clear that there would be no refund for the week we had booked. My simple issue was something that could have been easily resolved by anyone with a modicum of customer care skill but these people have none. Look at Steve's responses to any of the comments of concern on Trip Adviser and it is obvious that their attitude is that the customer is always wrong. His response to this review will be predictable. In total our four days have cost nearly £900. The location is miles from anywhere and in the most unprepossessing fringe of the Lake District, so unless you do not want to leave the compound and can avoid any contact with the management, anywhere else would be a far better experience.

Many thanks for your review and comments. We pride ourselves on our local family run business which we have owned since 2020 just before lock- down. As anyone can see this property has an excellent reputation on all social media platforms and we champion any constructive criticism to help us continually improve. What Mr Timothy St Atler fails to mention is the factual facts that all this particular sorry episode could and should have been avoided and every effort would have been made to facility him with the upmost respect however we found ourselves in a situation where the customer turned up booked into a 1bedroom package experience and started arguing and demanding he was in fact booked into a 2 bedroom cottage because of a medical condition although he was unable to substantiate this claim. The mood turned nastier, and Timothy then started to become aggressive abusive and insulting towards our female staff. At this point the owner was called to intervene to defuse the situation and to safeguard our female staff. On arrival the owner found the customer in the housekeeper's laundry room trying to intimidate her into moving him into a bigger cottage. The owner asked the customer to return to his cottage where a discussion took place, and 3 options were given. Full refund, Upgrade for a nominal fee, or leave. He seemed oblivious or had any concept of how he had come across towards the staff and in full denial he had even crossed a line. Mr St Aler took the nominal fee option, and he was moved and promised to call and pay later that evening. Following several phone calls and messages to him for the next 24hrs Mr St Aler wouldn’t respond and a female member and the owner had to visit his cottage to get a response. Again, Timothy started to become aggressive and abusive towards a female staff member who is heavily pregnant and starting using foul mouthed 4 letter disgusting language. The owner who was listening to this around the corner again had to intervene and asked Mr St Aler to leave with immediate effect for his aggressive and abusive behaviour which will not be tolerated. At no point was Mr St Aler threated with any physical violence. Had he been a normal human we would have moved and upgraded him for nothing when he first arrived but was more interested in telling us his stature and how much he had paid to charity for this experience which I may add goes to the charity and not us!!!! We have been left rather shocked and sadden by this whole episode and is not something we want to experience again. This was never about money or customer relations but merely a gentleman in his later years thinking he can speak to fellow human beings in a derogatory, aggressive and insulting manner especially towards females. This has no place in our society for this behaviour That said from the old saying “a bad penny always turns up “this gentleman in particular seems to carry this reputation around with him on several social media platforms and is never too far away from controversy having done some digging. Here is one example below but there are many others available in the public domain. This behave seems to be a common occurrence and we can concur with below owner we received the same treatment!!!!!!!!!!!!!! puddingfacepieplace, Owner at The Crown & Tuns, responded to this review Responded October 15, 2014 Regardless of the fabricated reasons for this revenge hatchet job ...there is a reason this gentleman was refused service and removed from the premises; we are not in the habit of turning away a table of three on a quiet lunchtime. But I refuse to have my staff spoken to in such a nasty insulting no way no matter whom you say you are. No one would ever tolerate this gentleman speaking to their daughter, mother, sister or in fact anybody in the way he did... his comments belong in the dark ages!!
