Lovely cottage, so cosy and loved the green walls. The bed was so comfy ! Great fenced of space for dogs. Only thing is we didn't have a oven glove so had to use a tea towel in which there was only one . And a bath mat is needed as the bath is very slippy. Other than that we can't fault it.

Stayed 3 nights with a friend in the 2 shepherd's huts Mabel and Sam. We could not have been more thrilled with the experience and left feeling relaxed and revitalised. The facilities are so comprehensive that it was like a home away from home, whether you're a couple staying in one hut or a group using both, you get TWO bathrooms to use with impeccably clean compostable toilets, great showers and even heated towel rails, Silas the silo BBQ space that like most things in the camp, has been lovingly converted by Tim and of course, the amazing hot tub with stunning views over the North Dorset Downs and Melbury Hill (which also provides a fantastic if quite challenging walk!) as well as a fully equipped kitchen and dining space that along with all the usual amenities also had a French press cafetiere, which immediately sent me hot-footing it to the large Tesco 10 mins away to buy some ground coffee to go with our fruit salad and croissants in the mornings :) We enjoyed reading in the deck chairs, lounging in the hot tub, walking through gorgeous fields and woodland and even spent a lovely day at the beach as the site is only an hour from the coast. From the wonderfully warm welcome from the lovely Tim and Lucy to the beautifully decorated huts, vintage memorabilia everywhere giving a homely feel and the stunning wildflower garden backing onto rolling fields and the hills beyond, this truly is a place where you can get away from the world and completely relax in peaceful seclusion.

This was a lovely place and perfect place to unwind and just sit back and relax. The hosts were absolutely lovely and couldn’t fault them at all. Sadly only a couple of negatives, being nearly £150 a night and as advertised that it did have this I would have expected a flushing working toilet and not a compost toilet, sadly this was something that I really didn’t enjoy, the fridge was not working correctly, there was no cows around the area or horses which should also have been updated on the site, the hot tub as well the first night was lovely but then when went to reheat it was more like a luke warm bath. As I said lovely place but if we had knowledge of the few things mentioned then we probably wouldn’t have ended up booking it.

Response from Tim Lucy and Sophie Kerridge, Owner at The Old Forge Self Catering Cottages & Glamping
Responded 31 May 2023
Hello Natasha, I am so sorry that your stay did not meet your expectations. It is clearly stated on our web site that we have compost loos which we service daily for our guests. Also we mention that we are currently resting our fields from our horses and rewilding our meadows. I do hope you enjoyed the abundance of wild flowers. However we have never had cows, we are not a working farm only a small holding. It does seem that the fridge had been unplugged during your stay which is most unfortunate. If you had contacted us during your stay we would have been able to rectify this and any problems with the hot tub straight away. We are always here to make sure that our guests have a wonderful experience and do our utmost to make their stay memorable. Kind regards. Tim and Lucy Kerridge.

Stayed in ‘Mabel’ shepherds hut. Totally amazing experience, Bed really comfortable too. So close to nature, great bbq built in a grain silo. Home made fire pits outside too. Tim & Lucy are wonderful hosts, nothing is too much trouble. A great area for exploring Dorset & of course for visiting the famous Gold Hill. Great value for money. Would highly recommend for anyone wanting to escape the hustle & bustle of every day life. A truly wonderful experience.

Stayed 4 nights in The Smithy which was absolutely lovely with great attention to detail and authentic features. There was everything we needed for our stay including a very comfortable bed. There is a main road to the side but you wouldn’t know it as hardly any noise at all, in fact the whole place is so peaceful and relaxing. Our only downside was the wet weather putting a dampener on our stay but the surrounding gorgeous countryside would look even more beautiful in sunshine I’m sure. 5 stars for a lovely place to stay

A delightful place to stay in beautiful countryside. We stayed in the Smithy which had all essential amenities and comfy bed, whilst still maintaining many original features . Our hosts Tim and Lucy were great and we wish we had stayed longer. If you are a classic car enthusiast it's a bonus. We will certainly return.

Stayed at the Smithy in October and really enjoyed our 3 day stay there. The converted forge, which still maintains many of its original features for decorative purposes, has been transformed into a comfortable mezzanine accommodation complete with wood burning stove and simply oozes charm and charisma. Hosts were very friendly and welcoming and gave us lots of tips for the area. Hosts have also gone to huge measures to ensure that the accommodation is Covid compliant which was assuring. We will definitely revisit.

From the incredibly warm and friendly welcome from our hosts Tim and Lucy, to the wonderful cosy accommodation in the shepherds huts with just the best toastie duvets ever...and the lazy evenings sat around in Silas the Silo, toasting marshmallows over the fire pit, having cooked a BBQ...afterwards lying in the hot tub gazing over the star studded sky. The peace and tranquility and the total switch off from our busy lives made this venue all the more remarkable and one suiting both adults and young children alike. Clare and Andy T

We came to stay in Sam and Mabel over this past weekend and we can't recommend it enough. We received a warm greeting from the owners Tim and Lucy, who told us all about the property and surrounding areas; they were so helpful and more than willing to help us with any questions we had. The huts are simple and very comfortable, equipt with heaters which we only had to use once over our 3 night stay because the beds were so toasty! The hot tub was a very welcome addition to the stay - we did not know how a fire hot tub would work but believe me keeping it hot was not an issue at all! Silas the silo was out favorite part of the area, as we sat out and used the open fire as a BBQ on multiple occasions. The toilets and shower were simple but very clean, as was the kitchen. The surrounding area was perfect for hiking and driving to local villages to explore. You also are not far from the Jurassic Coast! We will definitely be back!

Just back from a week staying in Wheelrights Cottage at the Old Forge. We thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of the stay thanks to our welcoming hosts Tim and Lucy. The cottage is well equipped, clean and spacious - just the ticket for a couple like us with Dixie our Cocker Spaniel. Dixie especially liked the fenced orchard where he was able to wander off and do his doggie stuff! The cottage has all the practical necessities and good wifi so we could keep up with the world as we enjoyed the peace and tranquility of Compton Abbas and its environs. What made the holiday was the location with easy walking access to the downs with their incredible views. During our stay we walked a new one each day and the experience just improved - nothing beats the satisfaction of getting to the top of a hill with 360 degree views!! Exhausting but good for the soul. We would highly recommend Wheelerights and the Old Forge - so much so that we've already re-booked for same time next year. Staycations rule!!
