High force Hotel is a hidden gem and a short walk away from the beautiful water falls High force and Low force set in a charming location. fantastic scenery for walkers and lovers of nature. The hotel is a fantastic place to stay and you will not be disappointed. Very clean and modern. The rooms are very modern and clean and is one of my top places iv stayed in. It's Very quiet and the bathroom is very nice and modern very comfy beds and nice quality bedding, great powerful shower and nice shower gels and shampoos to use. The rooms smell very nice to when entering. 🙂 A big plus that I always notice when travelling (especially solo) is the staff were all very friendly and most helpful with info about the local area and the best things to look out for and local walks taking in the falls. The food is top quality too everything I had including the breakfast was very pleasing and set me up for a day's walking. I would love to stop here again if I'm ever up this part of the country again.

just a one night stop but will definitely return. Lot's ! of pre visit emails all relating to C19 precautions etc but we're used to them now. Warmly welcomed and shown up to a truly lovely room, big bed, plenty of space nice modern bathroom. I like a quiet dark room to sleep in, this room had internal shutters, properly dark at night, and the location is such that passing traffic is minimal at night, resulting in a great nights sleep. Many, more expensive, hotels might bear this in mind !
Dinner was very good, great service, limited menu but good British staples, well cooked, presented and "generous" portions.
Staff were great, special mention to the Portuguese lady with an Oz accent, couldn't have been nicer.
Fantastic location for the Pennine fells and numerous waterfalls.

Set in an isolated and countryside location but on a fairly busy road is the hotel adjacent to the waterfall.

Small car park in front of the hotel for residents but a huge car park to the side for visitors for the attraction which can also be used (but inform staff inside so no charges occur).

Check in/reception is at the bar area and was a little difficult to find, but easy enough to work out.

Young staff, all attentive, friendly and efficient.

We were given rooms 1 and 2. Room 1 slightly bigger and with desks, whereas room 2 didn’t have any. Both good quality and en suite. Tv, drink facilities and toiletries included. Good rooms and very warm.

We paid £205 per room which included breakfast and dinner for 2 people. Food was excellent. I had French onion soup, Mussels with chips and ice cream. All lovely, although the sweet cinnamon flavoured soup was different to what I was expecting. Portions were excellent.

Breakfast was good with fruit, yoghurt, cereals, juices, toast, full breakfast or other choices. All good and the lady covering service was excellent.

All in all, great value and great place to stay. Complimentary trip to the beautiful waterfall directly over the road and we also were given a great tour and explanation by a ranger which was well worth 20-30 minutes. Loved it.

A couple of niggles, the only mirror was in the bathroom so my wife struggled with her hair dryer and also the walls seemed very thin internally and we could hear lots of activity. It was great other than that and staff did say mirrors had been ordered and were awaited. 🤞🏻

Room Tip: Get a room on the opposite side of the hall from the road. Not much of a view but much quieter.

The overnight stay started badly when they showed us to our room, Number 11 , very nicely appointed but the noise and smell coming from the kitchen via the extraction fan was not acceptable. So much so,the first thing the manager who showed us to our room said to us “the fan will stop at nine pm”. Regrettably the hotel was full and there was no alternative but to accept it. The fan did not go off at nine pm but nine twenty and we were woken at seven am when it started up again. Dinner was a complete and utter disaster, I chose the Potted Prawns to start and what arrived was a few defrosted frozen prawns sitting in prawn water encased in solid butter. No seasoning, no finesse. Awful. Our next course was a steak and ale pie and for some bizarre reason the chef decided to show us his culinary skill by adding a load of cocktail onions to the pie mix.
The vegetables accompanying the pie were over cooked with added baby sweet corn to engage our taste buds. Where this chef gets his ideas from I do not know.

Even though we pointed the above points to the manager he still had the gall to charge us £249.00 for two people. Exorbitant and really disappointing.

While there were certainly good points about this hotel regrettably there too many bad things to warrant any more stars.

Dear David, Thank you for staying with us at High Force, I was sorry to learn of your disappointing experince. Room 11 can pick up sounds from the kitchen which i can only apologise if this impacted upon your stay, we are just a small hotel with 11 rooms as opposed to a large property with the kitchen away from the guest bedrooms, i am also sorry that the fan was not switched off until 20 minutes after it had been advised. It sounds like you got off to a bad start with the room as your comments regarding the food are not representative of the vast majority of our guests and visitors who stay and enjoy every aspect their stay, including the food which you will see from our other reviews generally get great feedback, this said, we are never complacent about our standards and your subjective comments have been discussed with the kitchen team who will look to see if anything can be improved for the future. The potted prawn are very popular and we have never received this feedback before. The pie you had was our steak and ale pie, this does contain silver skin onions which are a common ingredient to steak pies. I wasn't aware of your concerns during your stay and i wish you had brought this to my attention so we could have looked to rectify the problem before you left. If you would like to discuss the matter further, please feel free to contact me directly. Kind regards Andrew Lindsey

We all absolutely loved our lunch with you on Christmas Day (despite us arriving late).

Our whole experience with you was exceptional on every single level. The staff were a total joy and demonstrated the perfect balance of attentiveness without being intrusive.

The food was outstanding and each course was a complete delight.

The decor, ambience and whole environment were superb and every detail was perfectly thought through. The table sizes and spacing in relation to other guests in the restaurant was absolutely perfect. It created a superb atmosphere of privacy between all guests with the benefit of all enjoying the experience together.

All of these elements resulted is us having the most enjoyable and memorable Christmas Day lunch we’ve ever had.

Huge congratulations to you on managing and overseeing a superb day with an amazing team of staff to support you.

We planned a walk to High Force and checked the website of the hotel beforehand and saw that Sunday dinners were 12 noon - 6pm subject to availability and that you should book between 12-3. We finished our walk and excitedly got to the hotel at 4pm. The inside of the bar/eating areas is lovely and cosy, lots of fires! We saw people who had finished eating and there were Sunday dinner menus everywhere. We went to the bar, ordered drinks then enquired how we shoud order food only to be told that it had finished! A lesson learnt on our part to ring beforehand and 'subject to availability' is what it is, but come on, if you're advertising that dinners go up to 6pm, I don't think it's unreasonable to assume they'll still be on offer at 4pm!

Dear Internationaist2014, Thank you for your visit and for your review, I am sorry that we had sold out of Sunday Lunch by the time you arrived at 4pm. As you rightly have noted, we do stipulate that lunch is served until 6pm generally (subject to availability). On the day of your visit, we had seen larger than expected numbers for Sunday lunch, its always difficult to predict how many we will likely serve, especially in months like January when it can go from very quiet to very busy in a matter of minutes. Once our Sunday menu ends, our regular menu is put in place, I do understand though that sometimes people are just looking for Sunday Lunch. I do hope that you will decide to come to High Force again in the future, I would certainly recommend that you book ahead to avoid any disappointment. We have discussed your feedback at our team meeting, chef and indeed I have taken onboard your comments. Thanks again for your feedback and apologies for the disappointment. Kind regards Andrew Lindsey General Manager

Like everyone else, it has been a very long time since we have been able to stay at a hotel, so we were hoping that this would be a stay that was worth that long wait. I am happy to report that this hotel easily exceeded even our highest expectations. We were greeted warmly, and the staff were uniformly polite, helpful and chatty. As were were only staying for one night, we'd decided to push the boat out a little and book a deluxe room. Room 9 (if you are interested!) had apparently been newly refurbished and was lovely. It had lots of windows with double aspect views over the charming countryside, and was, of course, spotlessly clean. In fact, the whole hotel looked immaculate and very tastefully decorated.

We had a few drinks in the bar, and ate in the restaurant for both dinner and breakfast. Both were excellent. The wine list was small but certainly the two bottles we had were good quality. Our bed was comfortable and the shower - a rain shower set into the ceiling above the bath - was piping hot and very refreshing.

The hotel is a short but quite steep walk from the base of the High Force waterfall that gives it its name. You can also park at the Low Force visitor centre a mile and a half away and walk on the other side of the river to the top of High Force. Both are worth doing.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and will definitely stay here again.

Dear marksW6986YC, Thank you so much for staying with us at High Force and for leaving such a wonderful review, we are all thrilled that you enjoyed your stay and that exceeded your expectations. We are never complacent about our standards and value feedback from our guests, i wonder if you had been given the incorrect wine list or perhaps the table cards with wine by the glass as our full wine list contains over 40 wines offering a good selection of wine by the glass and finer wines by the bottle. I am so sorry if we never provided you with this full list. I was delighted you enjoyed staying in room 9, it really is a lovely room and is becoming increasingly popular. We will look forward to welcoming you back to High Force in the future, thank you again for choosing to stay with us and for leaving your lovely review. Kind regards Andrew

Following a wet walk to see the falls in Teesdale, dropped into the High Force Hotel with the intention of just having a drink and a warm up. However having received a fantastic welcome from Andrew we couldn’t resist the temptation to stay for dinner.

With very safe COVID measures in place we felt perfectly assured in these heightened times, if only we had an overnight bag with us we would be writing this review at their breakfast table.

There is a superb menu worth checking out that fully reflects the food gathered around a hunting lodge that this building is, we both opted for the hearty Beef Bourgignon Pie - be prepared not to move afterwards! Finally a restaurant knows how to serve pie, in a proper pie dish fully draped in buttery handmade pastry.

We manage to find room to share the apple crumble that had been made that afternoon. Washed down with great well selected wines and topped off with freshly made tea and coffee.

Thank you Andrew and your team for an excellent evening, you have a real gem in a beautiful location.

I recall your visit very well and it was really lovely to chat to you both, i do hope that you enjoyed the rest of your break away and i do hope that we see you again. I'm pleased that you found the welcome to be warm, especially given the dreadful weather that night, i recall it was really poor. Thanks for your feedback on the pie, it is one of the favourites and i will let chef know of your kind feedback. I look forward to seeing you both again in the future, thanks once again. Our family stayed here as part of the wedding celebrations for our daughter and new son-in-law. I remember the hotel from my childhood as a stop off on our way to Scotland, so I already loved the place but I had never previously stayed in the hotel. From the moment we arrived we were welcomed, and felt entirely comfortable that the hotel was a Covid-19 secure environment. Our rooms were sumptuously decorated, and the beds, pillows and duvets were heavenly. Everything was immaculate, with complimentary toiletries, bottled water and excellent facilities to make our own hot drinks in the room.

Staff were attentive to our needs throughout and met all our unusual requests, down to finding AA batteries within minutes, and assembling a children’s teepee for us! The wedding meal was first class and the service seamless. There was plenty of room for guests to spread out and make use of the outdoor space where covered straw bales and blankets were set out around a fire pit. The children, supervised of course, could release energy running around the garden area.

Breakfast was plentiful and delicious, and everyone was satisfied with the wide choice available.

Andrew, George, Chef, kitchen and housekeeping teams at High Force Hotel, you did us proud. You ensured that the roller coaster of Covid restrictions, although still in place, could fade for awhile. We didn’t want to leave, so thank you Team High Force Hotel and Toby: you were all brilliant. We’ll be back for sure. Fiona & Peter C
