Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Reviews summary
This summary was created by AI, based on recent reviews.

The Red Lion Hotel garners praise for its spotlessly clean and modern rooms, which guests find to be both comfortable and beautifully decorated. While the service at the hotel generally receives accolades for being friendly and attentive, there are occasional mentions of inattentiveness.
The amenities, including quality food and comfortable rooms, contribute to a satisfying experience, although some guests note the food can be underwhelming and the drinks pricey. Despite these small drawbacks, many travelers feel the hotel offers good value and consistently commend its exceptional cleanliness.

Detailed Reviews
Check in was very friendly, fast and smooth with only the registration for the tracing system involved (which you can quickly scan at arrival). The room was massive with two comfy sofas, large bed and adjoining shower/bath room, and TV. Everything had been kept spotlessly clean. The rooms are behind the pub ina separate extension to the building so I couldn't hear any noise at all and slept incredibly well. Breakfast was delicious, a few choices on offer but the full breakfast with toast, coffee/tea was just what was needed. The owners in addition could not do enough, and were incredibly welcoming. Although this was a first time visit, it certainly would not be a last time, and given it's proximity (about 20 minutes drive from the motorway) I think it's worth staying here as a journey/business stop off.

After a long day working on the field we called into the Red Lion Inn Newborough for just a drink initially but then stayed for an evening meal. The staff on this cold evening were so welcoming and friendly, the fire in the hearth blazing cosily and, very noticeably, everywhere, including the toilets, was spotlessly clean! That is something I consider essential when thinking about eating anywhere. No stale food smells here either!
I ordered scampi, chips and a side salad. Served piping hot the Scampi was good and chips tastily crispy! All completed with a lovely fresh mixed salad.
My partner ordered Rump steak, medium rare ie pinky red and guess what it arrived perfectly cooked!!! We have been to so called decent 'high end' restaurants who haven't been able to get it right and generally overcooked the steak. So well done to the chef! Good choice of wines and draught beers too! I could see the staff work hard to make the customers feel at home and that can only benefit. Thanks to the staff, and chef, there that evening: Catrina, Mel and a new member of the team (forgotten his name). Also Nichola who was having time off but still ensuring everyone was being looked after. A place not to be overlooked, has done well this far and still far to go!

This was the first time we had stayed anywhere since pre pandemic. The checking in process was easy and we were directed to room 5 on the ground floor. The room is far enough from the pub and the main road that we were not disturbed by any noise. The room and ensuite were impeccably clean. The room has a flat screen TV and coffee making facilities. There is plenty of wardrobe space. The shower is over the bath. The beds were very comfy and I had a reasonable night's sleep. On Saturday breakfast was up to 9am. There was a choice of full English or continental. There was plenty of coffee. Yvonne has high energy and nothing was too much trouble for her. Check out was by 11am. There is loads of free car parking. We had a lovely stay and would return if we are in the area.

Have visited before for lunch before Xmas and was happy to repeat the experience.
However this time was disappointing.2 of us ordered the Grazers and 2 had main meals.
Waited 45 mins the grazers were cold, main meals were hot.
Although we ordered some of same grazers they were quite different from previous time.
The lamb Koftas were tough, the salmon cakes dry and all noticeably smaller on tiny Veg plates with just a few salad leaves out of a bag on the side. SO disappointing.
Another couple was also waiting long time .....is it because it was Monday.
Lady behind bar was pleasant but not responsible and had no excuses about long wait.

The rooms are basic but comfortable and are accessed by fire escape type steps at the rear of the pub with the rooms opening directly on to the landing. My visit was on a chilly winter night and the room was very cold. The bed was comfortable and the shower was very hot and powerful. Amenities in the room were very basic but adequate. Breakfast was served in the bar and the cooked breakfast was made to order. The waitress was very friendly and chatty and the food was served promptly and hot. The full English compromised of a fried egg, one sausage, a rasher of bacon, one hash brown, beans, mushy tinned tomatoes and a very chewy mushroom. There was an ample supply of toast and the tea/coffee was help yourself from a hot water urn which wasn’t really hot enough for a decent cuppa. This hotel is okay for a one night stay at a reasonable price but wouldn’t suit a longer stay.

Been here quite few times over the years but must say it really has gone down hill in respect of the bar food.i asked before ordering if the beer battered onion rings were home made as i do not like frozen onion rings was told yes they are home made.No they are not!! What came out was a bowl of greasy soggy frozen onion rings slightly overcooked but soggy! My husbands Hand battered cod was definately a frozen triangle of fish how they pass this off as hand battered is a joke again over cooked and batter was soggy as hell..i am guessing very old oil being used to cook food as chips were covered in bits and again soggy!!! The best part of the mixed grill i ordered was the sachet of mustard!! All meat dried out and tasteless chicken breast looked like it had been boiled it was that white no sign of it hitting a grill pan! If you want decent food please go to the stocks up the road so sorry we wasted our hard earned money here..we stayed over had no toiletries at all in the bathroom had to go out and buy shower gel in this day and age its like covid never existed so much for regular hand washing etc.. such a shame this pub has gone down hill used to love stopping here and we declined to buy breakfast at nearly £9 each after the slop we were served as an evening meal.this pub needs to up its game in terms of food quality.i would be ashamed of myself if i was the cook there!

We stayed at the Red Lion with friends and everything about the stay was perfect. The team there are so lovely and couldn’t do enough for us. We had some issues with a taxi company letting us down and the bar staff literally pulled out all the stops to get us an alternative. They are so welcoming and the food is delicious, we will be back (booking directly this time).

Stayed overnight and the room was clean, quiet and warm. Had a meal and because we had booked, we were shown to our reserved table. The service was fast and efficient and my lasagne was very tasty. At breakfast we had a warm welcome from Yvonne who explained what was on the full breakfast and you could have cereal to start as well. Yvonne was very friendly and chatty and if we are in the area again we would definately make another visit.

The Red lion is woefully under staffed, starters not worth the money. The mains were poor quality and the steak and ale crust was under cooked, it took about 20 minutes to order our food and drinks from the bar because there was only one person working the bar. The app to order at the table kept freezing, we didn't have a sweet because the bar was busy. This pub needs more staff and a different menu with better food preparation and presentation.
