Apple Bough Cottage at Upper Newton Farm easily gets five stars from me because it's a simply lovely place to stay. Pearl and Jon provide a warm and thoughtful welcome to their lovely farm which sits in the middle of beautiful Herefordshire countryside. The cottage is very well equipped and was well sized for us - we stayed as two couples and a baby. There were handy stairgates, a high chair and baby/toddler toys thoughtfully left out in the cottage courtyard. There is a little private outside garden but Pearl and Jon also allowed my nephew (and us) access to the farmhouse garden where they had brilliant play equipment and, better still, access across the farm's field and orchards. There was always something to see. While we were there: combining and baling, horses and cows grazing, hares, foxes, red kites and buzzards – not to mention beautiful views! The cottage is next to Pearl and John's farmhouse and we really appreciate how accommodating they were and how much time they took to answer questions, give tips and talk to us about the farm. Highly recommend to anyone who wants to experience life on the farm or simply wants a relaxing getaway that's well-located for Hay-on-Wye and Hereford – we hope to return!

We were welcomed by Pearl with a pot of tea before settling into the lovely cottage. It had all we needed and the main bedroom, with its big window, is great. The weather was excellent during our week so we did not spend too much time in the cottage but we did walk round the orchards on the farm, in the evening. It was a good base for our activities and sightseeing and I would recommend it to anyone. Hereford and the Welsh border is a lovely place to visit.

We had a perfect, restful week in this beautifully designed cottage on a working farm. We were excellently looked after by our hosts, Pearl and Jon, in spite of its being the start of the apple harvest, they were full of useful information on what was on and the best routes etc. The cottage is cosy and well equipped, we really appreciated the cup of tea home baked cake on arrival. Another plus for me was to have the chance to have a go at Eco- dyeing ( dyeing using leaves), with Pearl , who is a mine of information and hugely enthusiastic. There is so much to see and do in the local area , great walking , beautiful old villages and lovely tea shops and it's well worth shopping locally - we had some wonderful food. Herefordshire is a special county and this is a special place to stay whilst exploring it.

A well appointed cottage on a working farm, this is a perfect base for exploring the lovely Herefordshire area. Not too far from the city, but far enough away to experience rural peace and quiet. The cottage is comfortable, warm and well fitted out with everything you need. Pearl is a wonderful host, friendly and knowledgeable. I'd love to return.

We had a wonderful stay in Apple Bough Cottage. We had stayed there before and knew what to expect but even so it was a joy to be met by Pearl as we got out of the car. It was cold and wet so her offer of tea/coffee was much appreciated. She appeared a few minutes later with a pot of tea and a cafetière of coffee and there was delicious home-made cake in the kitchen. The cottage was cosy and warm - the burner made the living room so snugly. There's lots to do in the area but the weather wasn't great so we just settled down in the lovely cottage to read our books and play games. It was so comfortable and relaxing and we returned home feeling so much better. I can't recommend this cottage enough. Pearl and John will make sure you have a lovely stay. We'll definitely be going back again.

We stayed in Apple Bough Cottage over the Easter weekend. From the moment we arrived we knew we had come to a special place. Pearl came straight over to welcome us with a pot of tea, cafetière of coffee and a home-made cake that was still warm. We've stayed in lots of cottages but never had such a wonderful welcome. That was typical of the whole weekend. The cottage is cosy, well equipped and full of little decorative touches. We felt so at home and were so well looked after that even before we left we were already planning our next visit. It is a lovely place for a holiday.

The perfect rural getaway. Booked for a break over the New Year and, after a long drive from London, we received a warm welcome from Pearl with a well needed pot of tea! The rural location is stunning and Pearl, Jon and family made us feel completely welcome at their farm throughout our stay. After a day exploring the beautiful surrounding Herefordshire countryside it was lovely to return to our warm, cosy, delightfully appointed and comfortable cottage. Tastefully furnished, a TV and WiF, thoughtfully equipped kitchen (which unlike so many self-catering places you can actually find what you need to cook in!) and a wood burner to take the chill off a winter's evening. The owners provided useful tips on things to do (including walks around the farm and surrounding area) and simple instructions to make our stay enjoyable and hassle free. A great place to explore a beautiful part of the country. We would definitely stay again. Highly recommended.

Upper Newton Farmhouse provided an excellent base for us during our recent visit to the Hay Festival. Only a short drive away it was an oasis away from the hustle and bustle of the Festival. We enjoyed being a part of a real working farm and observing everyday farm activity going on around us. The cottage is full of character and charmingly decorated throughout. Having 2 bathrooms was useful in getting 4 of us out of the door on time in the mornings. The owner was very helpful and welcoming putting fresh flowers in the cottage on our arrival plus a welcome pack of useful food items. The farm gardens were a delight and a lovely place to take tea on a sunny afternoon. We also enjoyed doing the farm walk through the land belonging to the farm. We would love to return in the future.

I was lucky enough to stay in each of the cottages, Apple Bough and Chess Cottage. Each has a country cottage feel with themed decor, though this is subtle and not over the top or 'fake', as you so often find in self-catering places where someone else's idea of good taste is not equal to your own. The furnishings are of very good quality and contribute to a comfortable, homely atmosphere, as do the biomass woodburners, making for a very cosy and relaxing place to spend a chilly evening. There are real art works on the walls, books to read and plenty of lamps. There is a TV and WiFi (with excellent signal). The kitchen is equipped to a very high standard, with everything you could want on hand. The owner supplies eco-friendly cleaning products and haircare products, should you need them. Surrounding the cottages is the beautiful garden and farm beyond, with stunning views and true peace and quiet, with no sounds of distant motorways. The owner has described walks on the property that visitors are encouraged to take. There is seating outside for warm evenings and al fresco meals. Highly recommended. From here you can explore some of the delightful border towns and countryside, including Hergest Ridge footpath. Highly recommended.

Have stayed at Upper Newton Farmhouse several times with friends between 2005 and this past weekend, when we travelled up from London to participate in the annual Rough Ride, a mountain-biking event held in nearby Kington. The farm is beautiful (take a walk in the orchard!) and the cottages are well-appointed with all the mod cons, but best bit of all is Pearl. She welcomes you like an old friend, attends to every detail, and makes a fantastic full English breakfast. Thanks again, Pearl -we'll be back!
