After receiving some very bad news myself and my wife had to make a journey upcountry from Cornwall stopping over night at this fantastic little country / pub restaurant. Not wanting to socialise the staff kindly allowed us to eat in our room and made every effort to look after us, even sending back our lost jacket in the post - incredibly kind! The food was beautiful, especially the eggs royal in the am were incredible. Service was fantastic as was the location, I would give more stars if I could! A special thank you to Katy for being so kind while we were there and after we left!
I rate hotels/BB’s on three key things, quality of the towels, quality of the loo paper, and quality of food/venue. 1. Towels….great big towels, think and fluffy…10/10 2. Toilet role…good quality…8/10 3. Food…we had an excellent meal at the Pub and breakfast was not bad although would have preferred an area where you could help yourselves to fruit juice/cereals …8/10 Highly recommend this pub/BB..staff were very friendly and great location for what we were there for..
This is a charming country pub/ restaurant with facilities and food that surpasses most of the bigger chain hotels. The rooms are spacious, clean and beautifully decorated. Beds are large and comfortable. Our breakfast was superb with local sausages, bacon and black pudding provided. I highly recommend The Bel and Dragon at Kingsclere. Well worth a visit.
Stayed here for 2 nights in February on a business trip. The place is lovely, with a good combination of an old structure coupled with a more modern ambience. Staff were friendly and professional and the food in the restaurant was very good. The only issue I had, and it's probably my own fault to a degree for A - not researching properly and B - not asking for a room change once I realised, was that my room (Frith) was directly over the bar area and the noise, especially on the second night, was 'unsleepable'. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't that the bar was 'rowdy' or anything, but the floor of my room seemed paper thin and I could hear conversations as if people were sitting in the room with me. So, if you need early-ish nights and decent sleep, maybe avoid 'Frith'. My colleague had a room on the other side of the building and said he didn't have any issues. Other than that, a really nice place to stay :)…
In a word “FANTASTIC “. Our first time here to celebrate my wife’s 80th birthday. From the friendly greeting at the bar by Mark & Barry (I think) to the table service everything was spot on. Chef did a lovely board with a Birthday Greeting and candles. Also a special thank you to Ellie who took our reservation and showed us around Would highly recommend this place. Great customer service.
All 10 of our group had a lovely weekend at the Bel and the Dragon in Kingsclere. The staff were great, the food was lovely (breakfast & dinner) and the rooms were clean & comfortable. Would certainly return and also recommend to others.
Friendly welcome, and clean and very comfortable room with large bathroom. A long soak in the bath was most welcome after our long walk up the hills and surrounding countryside. The evening meal and breakfast were really good quality and excellent flavours. Very good value for money.
When my sister and I arrived, we weren't sure what to expect but Nick, Katie and the entire staff made us feel very welcome. Nick and Katie were unfailingly professional and nice when we needed something. Really enjoyed the breakfast and dinners were good too. The inn is tastefully decorated and our rooms were very comfortable, especially the beds. Shower pressure was strong and hot, and the rooms were very clean and maintained. I thought I'd hear some noise from the pub below but those old walls must be thick because I didn't hear anything and slept great. Thank you so much Nick and Katie, and the whole staff (apologize for names I can't recall) for such a memorable and fun experience in Kingsclere!
We stayed in a standard room (Wayfarer). It was quiet apart from creaking floor above which is expected in an old building. The room was dominated by the superking bed which left no room for bedside tables. Instead 2 wonky stools had been put there with encyclopedias on them to make the surfaces level! There was little hanging space - just a few hangers on some hooks on the wall. If a kingsize bed had been substituted (which is big enough for most people) there would have been room for bedside tables and a small wardrobe. There was hot water from the basin tap but the bath tap & shower water were only luke warm. we had to boill kettles of water for a bath! The dinner menu was too spicy for us and 12.5% 'voluntary' service charge was added to food & drink! This wasn't mentioned on the sample menu online. I know we could have asked to have this removed but it would have appeared mean. (We prefer to give a tip according to the service!). The food was overpriced - especially as it arrived on the Brakes lorry! The cooked breakfast was good but only greasy sourdough toast was included. They had no 'ordinary' bread, marmalade or cereals. We got fruit salad & fruit juice when we asked but it wasn't on the menu. When we checked out we were just given a total price & told that the invoice would be emailed to us. Poor show1 - as we had no way of checking the bill. Kingsclere is a lovely village and the hotel is well placed.…
