Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We were looking for a base in North Lewis for 6 nights and certainly found it in the beautifully refurbished Cross Inn. Our stay was very comfortable in a spacious well appointed room. From start to finish we were made to feel so welcome by our hosts who were always ready with local advice to enhance our visit to Lewis. Eating options are limited in this part of the island but don’t worry the tastefully refurbished Old Barn Inn, part of the hotel, will easily satisfy most needs. The freshly prepared meals are excellent, and if you just want a drink you will experience a convivial bar atmosphere. I would recommend booking a table, it is after all a cosy converted barn, as it is popular with visitors and locals alike. Breakfast is also worth the extra to set you up for the day. We found the location ideal for exploring the whole island, although you do need your own transport. Thank you so much for a wonderful stay, hope to see you in the future.

Fab stopover whilst doing the Hebridean Way. Great bar for a drink with the locals afterwards and friendly and helpful staff and owner. Little touches like putting bikes away and luggage in the room for us and real milk for residents makes for a great stay. Decor and rooms classy and comfortable. Nice feel about the place. Would def recommend.

We journeyed over to Ness for an evening meal off the Christmas menu in the newly refurbed restaurant. The home cooked food was well served (hot plates) and the portions large. My starter could easily have been made up to a main course. Drinks are also reasonably priced with five draught beers to choose from too. (Becks blue for the driver sadly). A very enjoyable evening out.

We prebooked for our family of 3 and our dog . We had to be relocated to the main restaurant which was very welcoming for all of us. For us being family and dog friendly is a must and the cross inn met all our needs.
The quality of the food was lovely and generous portion size.
Staff are attentive but not overbearing making it a very pleasant experience all round

After wild camping for almost a week, we stopped at the Cross Inn after a beautiful walk around the Butt of Lewis lighthouse.
Inquiring about a vacancy we took the last room available, reasonable price with breakfast included, continental and cooked!
Our room was really nice, clean ,orderly and quiet.
Our waiter for breakfast Dan, was very nice interested in our trip.
Cross Inn is a trek but well worth the trip !

Dropped in at the Cross Inn with friends last night for a meal and a few beers.
Lovely modern interior and excellent quick service.
Had the ribs which were sticky and brilliant followed by the even stickier toffee pudding with hot custard, my wife had the Scampi and one friend had the Sirloin whilst the other had ribs!
The food was served quickly but allowed us time to sample some good beer, and the prices were very reasonable!
Retired to the bar afterwards to sample the extensive range of gins and whisky.
Delighted to inform you that the bar is DOG FRIENDLY!
All in all a great night and big thanks to Alice, Duncan and all their staff for a lovely relaxing evening.
We will be back

On a bleak evening we wrestled against the wind to enter Cross Inn and were met with warm smiles and immaculate surroundings. The hotel is elegantly furnished with Harris tweed and lovely pieces of antique furniture on the stair to the rooms make you feel you are in a stately home. We had the family room that was spacious with a double and a single bed. Tea and coffee making facilities were upgraded above the norm with the inclusion of Tunnocks caramel wafers. Highland soap company products in the very clean ensuite were a treat. Dinner and breakfast were both delicious. The dinner chef in particular gave us butternut squash and rosemary soup and then baked haddock with couscous and garlic butter. 😋 Really high quality food and the restaurant has been refurbished in muted Harris tweed. It's a wild isolated spot but well worth the trip to Cross Inn.

This heading sounds hard to believe, but I do not believe that you can beat this establishment! We spent just one night here, but were simply bowled over by the standard of both accommodation and cuisine. Brilliant warm welcome from our hosts, the rooms are immaculate and superbly well equipped. We happened upon a live music night and the atmosphere was fantastic. Our three course evening meal was outstanding and even the draught beer was top notch. The cooked breakfast was out of this world, with sausage, bacon and unmissable Stornaway black pudding fresh from the butcher across the road. We were even leant tools to correct our camper van issues, you simply could not ask for more. Stay here even if you have to change your itinerary, this establishment is unmissable!

Takeaway food was appalling. Chips were burnt, and some were green inside. Fish was dry and tasteless, chicken goujons were dry and tasteless. Not to mention grossly overpriced. Needless to say we will not be dining there again, takeaway or otherwise. Suggest they get a new chef if something simple like fish and chips is a struggle to offer reasonable fare to the public.

I think even our regularly visiting sea gull will turn its beak up at the extremely large amount of leftovers.

Due to a radical change of travel plans, I emailed this establishment 1.5 weeks before I was due to stay, & I asked for a reply to my email. I did not receive a reply or acknowledgement to this email so I also followed up this email with a phone call but the number came up as invalid.

I received a very abrupt call this evening (29th July) from Alice, demanding to know where I was. When I explained that I had already sent an email cancelling my booking, her tone changed to being uppity & condescending, saying "well WE haven't received anything" as if it was my fault that she had not received the email, which I had sent tone the only address available for this place.

Her tone, words & general demeanour, even on the phone, means that I would NEVER stay at this place & would not recommend it. If that is the way Alice talks to someone she has never met, then I would not want to interact with her in person. Perhaps a course if customer service skills might be in order

Response from Alice Bagley, Owner at Cross Inn
Responded 8 Aug 2021
Hi Nina, I'm sorry you feel like you were spoken to in a way you thought was condescending. Unfortunately we have suffered a lot of no shows this year and at 10pm we thought to call to see if you were still coming as we had not received a cancellation from you by email, phone call or letter. At that time of night, if you were still staying with us, it is possible you had got into trouble on the road and therefore we like to call to ensure a guest is safe. You mentioned that you had sent an email cancellation but we still cannot find this on any of our contact methods. We only have one phone number advertised so it is strange that this would come up as invalid. You did say that you would forward the cancelation email but we have not yet received this. Maybe you could do this? There also would have been a cancellation charge at 1.5 weeks notice as per our terms and conditions. Any cancellation request should be acknowledged before it is seen as confirmed. We think this 1 star review is unfair as you have not been to Cross Inn and no staff should ever be named in a review for data protection and harassment reasons.
