Crowning a hill in the renowned winemaking region of Burgundy, Château de la Resle has the charm and personality of a well-loved private home. The six elegant rooms and suites are taken care of by Dutchmen Johan Bouman and Pieter Franssens, who invite guests to share the French, ivy-wrapped manor house they painstakingly restored. Adding to the feeling of romance and exclusivity is Johan and Pieter’s personal collection of contemporary art and design, which attracts fellow connoisseurs from around the world. From the château, which sits on the edge of an 800-hectare hunting forest, there are bucolic views down the valley of Montigny la Resle. The wine village of Chablis – that gives its name to one of the most famous white wines in France – is also just a short drive away. Exploring the area is a delight, but guests are equally happy to unwind at the château’s spa, soak in the azure pool, or relax by a sizzling open fire with a glass of the château’s own Chablis.

I absolutely loved my stay at the Château. The hosts were welcoming and friendly, as were all the staff. Breakfast and dinner were provided and the food was excellent. The dinner is a set menu which I enjoyed trying new dishes and flavours that I might not order in a restaurant. The rooms had everything you’d need from a mini bar, coffee machine, towels, robes and shampoo / shower gels. I had the best sleep staying here, it’s so peaceful and serene. We visited a local market and vineyard and ate lunch in the nearby village. If you need some time out to relax, savour really good food and enjoy chatting to the hosts and other guests by the pool then I cannot recommend this Château enough. Already looking forward to my next visit.

We loved our stay, the welcome from Johan and brief morning conversations were a great way to find out about the area. Johan is very knowledgeable regarding the surrounding areas and villages and his restaurant recommendation's never failed to deliver. If you want a city envioroment/town centre location this isn't the place to stay, if you want solitude, peace and be close to Chablis and Auxerre then this place ticks the box. Unfortunately the rain didn't cease during our time here, which is a great excuse(as if we needed one) to come back again in the summer.

Thank you so much for your kind words. It keeps being a great support to read these kind of comments in a period with so much negative news about the Corona virus. We are of course heavily impacted by the lock down of the country and the fact that travel is understandably not our top priority at the moment. I hope everybody who reads this will be motivated to book with us once things are getting back to normal.

Thank you Johan and Pieter for the fabulous stay at the Chateau de Resle. The house, grounds and of course the pool are unique, beautifully furbished (clearly a life’s passion) with bucket loads of ambience and style. We stayed in the self contained Noyers apartment - fully kitted kitchen, lounge, dining and of course a sumptuous attic bedroom with en suite. Enough space to park the mountain bikes, and store the cases of Chablis. Throughly enjoyed the Saturday and Monday pool side dinners cooked by Johan, and the table banter with Pieter. The salt water lap pool and quiet pool side setting offer a much needed respite, especially if you have cycled to Chablis, walked the river at Arcy and visited the caves, brought honey at Pontigny Abbey, lunched in the medieval town of Noyers or ambled the back streets of Auxerre. You are top quartile hosts Johan and Pieter - nothing is too much trouble (even loaning us martini glasses for a cheeky pre dinner cocktail). Loved the continental style breakfasts, your scrambled and the wonderful warm, fresh bread. The chateau is a must for those passing Chablis - is on our repeat list. As my wife Gloria said at the time, simply spectacular !

Having read the glowing reviews before booking, I feel a little deflated, yes it is a stunning location and property, but this does not detract from the fact that the services provided are very limited.
I understand that you run the hotel as if we are invited into your home, at the prices being charged this is not your private home it’s essential a business, for this I feel a bar where you can have a variety of drinks, served by a bartender should be available, not an honesty bar with a poor selection of beers, wine and soft drinks.

To pay 90 euros in a taxi for the nearest restaurant round trip, is another cost and I would prefer to spend time in your beautiful hotel than in the town.

We were lucky enough to enjoy the food as we were there on a Tuesday, and had an enjoyable evening, but the food was fairly average, the service was pleasant , but we were not able to sit outside as we requested.

As a smoker I was shocked to be told there were only 2 places I could smoke, one was behind a bush and the other behind a wall, if you do not want smokers to be seen, have a non smoking policy.

All in all not the experience I expected.

Let's not be naive! Of course we run a business and I don't see what's wrong with that!? I guess we all just have one home and I guess none of has to make an online booking before going home in the evening. The Château is indeed our home; as owners we live here all year round and we share the house with our guests. I guess one review on Booking wasn't enough and you probably felt the urge to add a second one. One would almost think you are making a "business" out of it :) Just to sum up our "limited services"; 4 hectares of gardens, a heated outdoor pool, sauna, steambath, Spa by Codage for massages and beauty treatments, conference area, gym, pétanque court, tennis courts at 2km, honesty bars, restaurant, electric car charging facillities, bicycle rental, concierge service.... And our "poor selection" in the honesty bar; 5 different local beers, 5 different soft drinks, 49 local wines (red, white, rose and sparkling) and a selection of 10 spirits. In my opinion an honesty bar feels more like a home situation than a bar with a bartender, which by the way is impossible to justify with only 10 rooms (but that is maybe too much of a business reasoning). Smoking is indeed restricted as we have had bad experiences with guests smoking on terraces and by the swimming pool. Since recent droughts we no longer wish to take the risk of people smoking outside designated areas as we have a lot of very dry grasslands and over a 1000 hectares of forest right behind the château. However we don't neglect our smoking guests; we just installed two really nice lounge chairs for their convenience. All in all I can only conclude that I am sorry you did not get the experience you expected but we know by now that it is impossible to please everybody

We absolutely loved our stay at Château de la Resle. What Johan and Pieter have created is truly magnificent.

The interior design is bold and unique unlike anything we have seen in many of the other Design Hotels we have stayed at over the years. Through their personable service and attention to detail it felt more like a stay at a friends (incredible) house rather than a hotel. The pool and spa area are lovely and perfect place to relax.

We will definitely come back.

We stayed at the chateau for a long weekend in July and used it as our base for exploring the Chablis wine region. The chateau is wonderful and had all the facilities we needed during our stay. We stayed in one of the rooms in the main house, which was lovely & spacious. The owners were also very friendly and helpful.

We spent some time enjoying the pool each day and also ate at the chateau on two nights. The food was lovely and as there was only a pre-defined set menu to eat from for dinner, this actually meant we tried dishes we might not normally order in a restaurant. It was also nice to eat outside on the terrace by the pool. We ate out in Chablis at Fill Au Zinc one night as well, which was also a great experience. Breakfast again was very nice with a great selection of bread/cheese/fruit and choice of eggs cooked to order.

The hosts and staff could not do enough for us during our stay, and whilst it may not have all the facilities or services of a 5 star hotel, it certainly felt like a 5 star experience. The owners took time to talk to all the guests and offered advice on where was worth visiting in the local area.

We visited quite a few local villages in the area, including Chablis on market day. Definitely worth a trip if you want to pick up some local cheese/meat/bread/fruit. The local cherries were amazing! We also spent half a day exploring the vineyards on an e-bike tour that we rented from Chablis. Really great way to see the vineyards and allows you to stop off to do some wine tasting.

Definitely would love to return one day when next visiting the Burgandy region.

Tremendous hotel with great service. We had 3 very individual rooms, 2 in the main house and 1 overlooking the pool. All were very spacious and comfortable.
Excellent breakfast to set you up for the day too, nicely presented and delivered by the young team.
We had the gourmet dinner on the Saturday evening and this also met the high expectations that had been set.
The owners are on hand without being intrusive.

Our penultimate hotel and probably our favourite!
We've spent 3 weeks travelling around France and this was our last hotel before going into Paris and home. And I think our favourite - not necessarily because of our room, but because of the service (and food).
I had tried to upgrade but the hotel was full - saying that our room was a great size and although it didn't have air conditioning there was a powerful fan which did the job of keeping us cool at night. Johan (and Peter) were the most amazing hosts! You really do feel at home in this hotel.
The swimming pool is a 2 minute walk over the road and there are more rooms there, along with the restaurant and kitchen where you could go and watch the chef at work. I totally recommend that you eat at the hotel - not just because it is slightly remote, but the food is exceptional!
We met some interesting and lovely people over dinner on the 2 nights we were there and it was just so relaxing and lovely.
We don't often say this but we will definitely be back next year. We didn't get change to say goodbye to Johan and Peter so we'll have to! We'll just make sure we book early so we get more choice of rooms.

We spent a wonderful week at Chateau de la Resle in August. The warmth of the welcome, the uniformly high standard of accommodation, facilities and food, the kindness and cooperation of the owners and staff combined to make our stay a truly memorable, relaxing and totally enjoyable experience.

Johan and Pieter have evolved a magical formula for Chateau de la Resle, and we are very grateful to Johan for his unfailing assistance and attention to our needs.

All of the staff were very professional and helpful, and Mathilde was especially helpful and considerate.

In sum, a wonderful stay and we look forward to visiting Chateu de la Resle again.

The stunning chateau will surprise you upon a closer look. Peter and Johan are avid art collectors and the chateau is exquisitely furnished with the most eclectic decor, art, and objects. Everything is super modern, clean, comfortable, and the pool is a perfect addition to relaxation while in Chablis. Their dinner offerings were really top notch too. Perhaps one of the best features of this stay was Johan’s huge smile, hospitality, and vast knowledge of the area. Definitely bike to Chablis on market day and enjoy all the delicious wines of this region. Loved it all!!
