I think 4 and a half stars is about right. We enjoyed an overnight stay in one of the hotel's more expensive rooms and lunch the following day. I knew the place from 50 years ago and a lot of the character has been kept although the recent refurbishment, whilst beautifully done, wasn't always to my taste - too modern and in places a little bland. The hotel has recently acquired its own tartan and that is now a constant and very attractive theme running through the rooms. The room (Neidpath) was superb - very large, comfortable and a 7 foot bed. Wifi didn't reach the room but was available elsewhere in the hotel. The bathroom would be improved by better and more toiletries and a magnifying mirror. Better shower pressure and better quality towels would help as well. Breakfast was surprisingly limited - choices of cooked meals (and nicely cooked) but no fruitor fruit juice, cereal or ham/cheeses which I would have expected for a hotel of this class. The lunch menu was good and the food well cooked and nicely presented and the dinner menu looked interesting as well. We found all the staff delightful. Sandra on reception who had been most helpful during the booking process was lovely and the two girls in the dining room are an asset to the hotel. The hotel has tried to appeal to a wide range of clients with rooms significantly different in quality and price. This could lead to differences in expectation.... I would recommend for either an overnight stop or a special treat and choose your room accordingly. It must be a lovely setting for a wedding.…
We had the most beautiful Birthday meal with Family yesterday here. Food was excellent as was service. The surroundings magnificent. The whole experience unforgettable. We will certainly be here again.
Went for a meal with friends. Great food, good service, beautiful surroundings, friendly and attentive staff and owners. Locally owned I believe, for the first time in many years and deserves support after two years of covid lockdowns and interruptions. Great rural location but well within striking distance of many major towns and cities for visits. Thoroughly recommended.
We were competing in a car trial and needed to park car and trailer. Ample parking and hosts were so helpful and friendly. they had a slight issue with the room heating but immediately moved us to another room which was lovely and cosy. The food was delightful and although a set menu we like everything on it and difficult to choose from the selection. The bar was comfortable and informal and nothing was too much trouble. Staff went out if their way to ensure our stay was enjoyable. We will definately return and would recommend
To bring in the New Year, we stayed overnight at this lovely castle. The old worlde atmosphere of the castle with its rooms and bedrooms is just so cozy and atmospheric. You can't fail to be captivated by its charm. The owners Jane and Rab are fantastic and make you feel immediately at home. A great stay ! Thank you both!
Went with friends on Friday for dinner from the festive menu and was not disappointed. From the moment we walked in, we were warmly welcomed. The menu choice was lovely and the actual meal was delicious. Staff were all friendly and polite. We then decided to come back the next night and take advantage of the overnight stay offer. Another fantastic meal, amazing staff, beautiful room and delicious breakfast. Look forward to going back again in the new year.
We took our Son and Daughter -in -law to Shieldhill Castle for dinner tonight and have to say we all had a great Dining experience, lovely welcome, excellent food. excellent service and so much comfort with log burning fire and comfortable seating. Definitely to be recommended. We will certainly return!
Booked this through myhotel.com for last minute weekend away deal. From arrival the staff couldn’t have been any more helpful and friendly. Stayed in one of the courtyard rooms which was adjacent to hotel. Room very spacious with all facilities. Hotel food amazing we had dinner included for the first night with great choices and breakfast both mornings again with plenty of choices. Although quiet the bar was a lovely place to have a drink before and after our meal and staff also sorted viewing of the Scotland game. Very handy for trip to Biggar, Peebles and Lanark Loch. Will definitely be back in the new year. Thanks for a great weekend.
This was my first visit. I spent two days here with a friend. It is a lovely castle with nice scenery. The food was excellent. By far the best point is the excellent staff. Everyone was exceptionally nice. They went out of their way to be helpful from helping us with luggage (which rarely happens these days), to serving food we asked for that wasn't on the menu, and being flexible with check out time. I rarely write reviews, but I have never experienced a whole staff as excellent as this team.
We have just returned from a two night break at Shieldhill Castle. I'll start with the positives, the castle is set in lovely grounds and we were greeted with a warm welcome from Jodie the receptionist who showed us to our room in the Courtyard. I was very impressed with the room which was furnished to a high standard, clean comfortable and extremely spacious. We were travelling with our dog and it was pleasing to have such a luxurious standard of accommodation that was dog friendly. The en-suite was an accessible wet room which was absolutely fine but hadn't been refurbished to the same standard as the room and had a not very powerful electric shower. We were staying on a 2 night package with an allowance for dinner on the first night. We had dinner in the bar as we had the dog with us and the staff were lovely and helpful and the atmosphere in the bar was warm and friendly. The food was ok, I had the black pudding and haggis stack which was a bit underwhelming 2 thin slices on a plate with some sauce, my husband had the scallops which he said were nice but a bit gritty. My experience definitely improved with the main course I had the fillet steak which was beautifully cooked and well rested although slightly more rare than I asked for and my husband had the chicken which was tasty but quite a small portion. We both had sticky toffee pudding for dessert which was tasty. Breakfast on both days was very average, the same dry thin black pudding and haggis slices that I had as a starter the night before, over cooked eggs, beans and mushrooms. A lot of people have said how good the food was so maybe the main chef was not there when we visited but we felt the food didn't really measure up to the standard expected. Overall the place is lovely and all the staff friendly and go out of their way to help we would stay again but do feel it is missing some fine attention to detail that would make it worthy of 5 stars. The courtyard was also in need of weeding.…
