Detailed Reviews
We had a wonderful weekend at Cley Windmill with our 10 month old daughter. We stayed in the River Room which was spacious, light and beautifully kept, with beautiful views of the garden and river. The staff provided a cot which was a huge help and were extremely helpful and accommodating for the duration of our stay.
Breakfast was delicious with lots of options, both cooked and continental. We had evening dinner at the Windmill on one evening which was amazing quality and a lovely intimate setting. An added bonus was that a lot of the produce was locally sourced.
The location was ideal for exploring the local area - lots of beautiful walks on the doorstep.
The whole experience was absolutely wonderful and we'd highly recommend a stay here!

Myself and my partner had a fab week staying in the windmill . We were greeted by Carolyn and Julian who showed us round the rooms in the amazing windmill and gave us a brief history which is fascinating. Even though we stayed during covid we were made to feel very safe and secure and hygiene is a top priority ie all staff wearing masks , hand sanitizer machines etc etc. We loved the atmosphere in the windmill Very friendly and relaxing and also the views to the beach were breathtaking. The rooms were very clean and well furnished (we stayed in 3 different rooms) and the beds were very comfortable. We ate in a few nights and the food was delicious and so too was the Norfolk gin served from their bar....the new decking area outside is very ‘Zen’ perfect for sitting out on a cool summer evening in comfy chairs star gazing....can’t wait to come back again .

Stayed in the wheat chamber for two nights for our anniversary this weekend. The room was very spacious and welcoming as it had the addition of a settee and one of those electric fires that give the impression of a real wood burner for additional heating which we did make use of due to the howling wind. The room overlooked the marshes and out to sea which in summer I’m sure is fabulous. A tea/coffee tray was in the room together with iron ironing board and hairdryer but sadly no mini fridge which I feel sure was mentioned in the write up but fresh milk was available downstairs in the lounge area. We did not eat dinner at the mill as the menu was a set menu and rather limited for my tastes and at £32.50 per head a little expensive although we did meet some friends who said the evening meal was delicious. Breakfast was excellent with a selection of hot food served at your table and a cold selection through in the bar area. The staff were pleasant if a little casually dressed. We were very fortunate and managed to get a deal for the two nights if not I don’t think we would of been able to afford to stay or feel it was value for money as it does lack a little finesse given the cost in that as mentioned no mini fridge, the furnishings are also a little basic and getting towards needing replacing also no individual shampoo/conditioner or body lotion/robes/slippers etc it just misses the little attention to detail you get from the Byford group in the North Norfolk area. However I do understand that the upkeep cost of such a unique building requires a substantial investment - especially the floor in the room above ours as this had incredibly squeaky floorboards and the occupants had no consideration for those below. Finally we have stayed in many places whereby if they are aware it’s a special occasion they pop a little gesture in the room - sadly although they were aware it was our anniversary (because relatives had ordered flowers for our room) there was no acknowledgement by the owner/management again that lack of attention to detail. We would go again as overall we enjoyed our stay but would actively look for another deal. Final footnote the wheat chamber doesn’t have a bath just a shower.

Thank you for your review and we're so pleased that you had a lovely weekend and would come to stay with us again. With regards to your comments about the mini fridge - we took the difficult decision to remove these last year due to so many guests leaving without telling us about expensive items that they had enjoyed - half bottles of champagne in particular - and the loss that we incurred on a regular basis. However, as you say - fresh milk is freely available from reception and should any guest request a fridge for their room we are only too happy to provide this. You will have seen our lovely compimentary Cley Windmill soap but as for the shampoo and conditioner - we stopped using individual items some time ago because of environmental concerns - we were throwing away so much plastic - and we do find that the lovely out of eden dispensers offer a much more environmentally friendly solution. Your friends were right - the evening meals are delicious, courtesy of our excellent chef. We are so sorry that your anniversary was overlooked and I have asked Laura, our General Manager, to send you a voucher towards your next stay with us by way of an apology. We do normally always acknowledge special occasions - normally guests dine with us for events such as this and we make a point of providing something a little extra during the meal. We do hope to welcome you back and maybe next time you would like to try one of our other lovely rooms - perhaps with a bath? - the Wheat Chamber, being on the first floor of the tower of the windmill, doesn't have room for a bath but as you say, has a shower.

We thought that it would be really special to stay in a windmill for two nights at the end of our holiday in nearby Wells-next the-Sea. When we booked the only room available was the "Long Room" which is sandwiched between the car park and the main reception area (this is not made clear on the website). Breakfast on the first morning was a fiasco as only one person was serving, who took orders from several guests who had arrived in the dining room after us before taking our order.
On the first night we did not sleep well as we were too hot so the next morning I asked if we could have sheets and blankets instead of a duvet - I was asked why I hadn't tried using the fan (a cheap & noisy appliance) which was provided in the room. The new bedding was grudgingly provided instead of a duvet but we still woke up too hot the next night and discovered that it was because the heating had been left on (in September) and could not be controlled from inside the room. When we were leaving I mentioned that we hadn't slept well again because of the heating, no apology was forthcoming from the "manager" we were just given £30 off the total bill which was around £500. I really had the impression that the management do not care about the guests and think that the windmill will sell itself because it is a unique place to stay. Perhaps I'm old fashioned but I think if you are charging high prices you should provide an excellent service.

We are very disappointed by this review and sad that you stayed with us in September, yet it has taken until February to air these points. We are also somewhat perplexed. The heating in the Long House can be adjusted or turned off via the controls in the room - it has its own separate boiler - so we cannot understand why you were unable to do this. You can either adjust the main thermostat - or you can choose to turn down/off the radiators individually. This has always been the case. The fans are there for the hot summer months, if required. The Long House is, in fact, one of our most popular rooms and often the room of choice for wedding couples. It has a beautiful view out over the reeds to the river. Guests often comment on how much they like the layout, with the comfy sitting area separated from the sleeping/four poster area. We are sorry to hear that the room wasn't to your liking. In terms of the management 'not caring' this is simply not the case - our staff pride themselves on offering the best service that they possibly can, and time and time again guests comment on how warm and friendly they are, with nothing being too much trouble. I am sorry that this appeared not to be the case on the occasion of your visit and can only apologise. We have had one or two staff changes since September and I can absolutely guarantee that our current team is first rate. I am extremely sorry that you found your stay to be less than satisfactory and as you will see, have taken your comments very seriously. Our aim is always to provide an excellent service for our guests and I'm sorry if we fell short on this occasion.

My partner and I throughly enjoyed our stay at Cley windmill! It was a real treat especially with all the madness happening in the world at this time. We definitely got the isolation that was needed and the adaptions that were made to support this actually made us enjoy our experience more! We stayed in the river room which was lovely we got an odd visit from the local cat which was nice but the staff were very happy to support us if we didn’t want him around! The evening meal was to a very high standard it is set menu but I liked this as saved making any decisions! The views were stunning and the local shop had some amazing produce! We would definitely go back possibly to try another room. In terms of the price we were lucky in getting a discount however it is high end so would expect to pay those rates. It would be a treat more than a regular visit but isn’t that what we all deserve sometimes! Walks and setting was lovely breakfast met all our needs and was very tasty kippers were yummy and a perfectly cooked poached egg!! Thank you for having us hopefully we will return in the summer!!

We had visited Cley, for the day, several years ago and liked the village, so when looking for somewhere to stay when revisiting the area and seeing availability at The Windmill, we immediately booked this quirky accommodation. There is a definite novelty value in staying in a windmill and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The views from the rooms higher in the windmill provide excellent views, even on a rainy day. The isn't a restaurant any longer, but the recommended outside caterer, who brought food in, was excellent and the staff looked to provide a service by providing the cutlery etc and helping clear away. The breakfasts were well prepared and to a good standard, although the dining/breakfast room felt a bit small when at it's busiest. There isn't a car park, but the free Parish car park, adjacent to the mill, is free and we had no problems getting a space. You are very close to the coast and it's footpaths, as well as the Cley Nature Reserve. The property is very exposed to the elements and I would imagine it is a running battle to keep on top of the maintenance.

We had a night here at the Cley Windmill, And I must say it was a wonderful experience!
We stayed in the wheat chamber room and it was truly stunning!! Attention to detail spot on...Just a beautiful room!
Table and chairs were put in our room for us to eat at as Covid-19 restrictions meant we were unable to dine in the eating area downstairs... which was fine/understandable.. we went to the local deli and smokehouse and got cheese wine meats nibbles!
The views over the marshes from our room where Fantastic.. we also walked from Cley to Blakeney Which took around an hour.
Staff very helpful friendly and professional!

We have just returned from a wonderful few nights away at Cley Windmill. We stayed in the Cart Shed which was a lovely large room and which I highly recommend. It is not in the windmill itself but the views of the windmill are amazing.
Staff are lovely and very friendly. Breakfast was delicious with lots to choose from. Location is brilliant, a short walk to the beach and we really enjoyed spending the afternoons and evenings on the new decking area in the reeds. It is very peaceful and we have come back feeling very relaxed. This place is a must and would highly recommend.

Booked to take my wife away as a birthday treat as had talked about staying at Cley windmill for a long time.
Before I give the reason for an average I will just say that the location and the windmill is fantastic. Sitting in the garden with a glass of fizz with the sun shinning under the windmill, gave you the wow factor.
I understand the mill has recently been taken over and maybe that is why the room was tatty and not clean. The carpet on entering the room was terribly marked and the dust and cobwebs was not what you would expect for a room costing over £200 a night for B&B. The walls were marked badly with paint flaking off. In the bathroom the velux window would not close properly and the shower was just of mixer taps not what you would expect for a high end establishment.
It just feels that they are relying on past good reviews.
My wife summed up the room by saying if it was in a normal hotel and not the mill you would of asked for a better room.
Breakfast was excellent and such a shame they dont do evening meals anymore but suspect that was due to them looking to sell.
I would not go back unless the reviews showed the new owners making an effort to revive the place and have evening meals back.
Such a shame and I hope it gets back to its former glory.

We spent a couple of nights last week,in Cley Windmill (The Boathouse),we were in Norfolk for business purposes, and thought it would be very pleasant to make couple of days of it .Firstly The Windmill it’s self is historically beautiful, and a truly lovely spot to sit outside of an evening, enjoying a glass of wine. But sadly everything else was very disappointing indeed. The room was quite sweet, but cheaply decorated, and the bathroom was very poor.A cheap bath with no plug, with a cheap divert or shower tap ,with a glass panel over the side of the bath for a shower. Now ,they have softened water, which is lovely, but with no shower mat,and nothing to grab onto to get out, with soft water making the bath like a skating ring, was extremely dangerous.Very few extras, were given,no shower cap ,slippers, dressing gown.We felt the accommodation was like an old style forte post house standard ,certainly not up to today’s standards.Breakfast was mediocre, and even our cappuccino was actually ghastly. Sadly unless things change, shall not visit again.

You may have already booked or visited but if not , for general information, I know the owners of the mill are incredibly friendly and accomodating , so I am sure if you email them for more photos or information they will do whatever they can to help. Enjoy your stay, you will not regret a holiday at Cley Mill.
It's definitely worth considering eating at the mill as the chefs are excellent. It's a fixed menu and very good value for money. Our other favourites are The Dun Cow, the Wiverton Bell and The Moorings in Blakeney. But all of the places mentioned by others are good too.
If you want to go a bit further afield try the Black Lion in Walsingham. But I'd eat at the mill if I were you!
Yes, Dogs are allowed (one only) in the Boathouse and in Dovecote.
Hello! Wheat Chamber is on the first floor so only involves one flight of stairs which isn't particularly steep.
It's a lovely room with great views
Sorry you have had problems in getting onto the website. It seems to be working fine now. Perhaps give it another go, or failing that try ringing Simon and Sarah our lovely managers on 01263 740209. We hope to welcome you to the windmill very soon!
