Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

As this wasn’t an hotel, I should have managed my expectations. We were met in the bar by the Bar manager/Landlord, who was very welcoming. The access to the rooms was up precarious stairs (don’t were heels), past kitchen/storage areas. We had booked an Economy room as that was all that was left. It was New Years Eve and the hotel in town would only accept bookings for two nights, which we didn’t need (we were attending party at nearby Glenmore House). The door to our room couldn’t open property as the bed was obstructing it, so we had to squeeze through. The bed linen and towels were spotlessly white, but unfortunately the room smelled unpleasant and stale. The toilet and sink were very clean, but unfortunately the shower had hairs in it from a previous occupant (long and black; I have blonde hair), which made it unusable for me. I don’t now whether that is the standard of all rooms above pubs, but in future, I will stick to hotels. I was glad to leave in the morning.

Clean, tidy and value for money. If you're looking to avoid chain hotels and want to have access to London via Surbiton's mainline station then this is an excellent location. The Black Lion doesn't put on airs and graces, it offers a warm welcome, great bar and food later in the day along with a garden to relax in or for those that like to smoke.
It's an older pub so don't think you're going to arrive to manicured concrete and glass however, the rooms have been refurbished and it's v clean and tidy. If you're someone with mobility issues the stairs to the room won't work for you, otherwise they lead to a selection of rooms that work for business travellers, families and just those seeking a great place as a base to explore London easily. You'll even have access to a rather good coffee machine downstairs in the bar for those who need an additional caffeine hit during their stay.
Breakfast isn't offered, but there's plenty of cafés and eateries within walking distance with a wide variety of menus to suit most tastes. You can eat later in the day at the Black Lion from their pub menu, so options abound.
Mark and his team are welcoming and helpful, great example of a thriving pub that's adapted to the modern economy to look after locals and visitors.

Stayed here with my Wife and two other couples over the weekend.
The new recently refurbished rooms with ensuite bathrooms absolutely perfect couldnt hear a thing in our room a very busy bar and live music. Very reasonably priced for the area.
Mark and Danny the Landlord's couldn't do enough for us
Food good beers great.
A real locals pub with many restaurants near by. Good links to London.
We will be back.

Having a brother and sister in law that live in Surbiton we frequently visit the Black Lion for beer and food. We always receive a warm welcome from Mark the landlord and although the pub’s menu is rather limited the quality is excellent.
Last Sunday the four of us booked for Sunday lunch (advisable) and I could not in any way find fault with the quality (and quantity) of the food on offer. There was a choice of roast sirloin of beef, leg of lamb and chicken breast, we stuck to the lamb and the chicken both of which were excellent.
I highly recommend this lovely old pub.

Staff were welcoming and friendly, price was reasonable. Location was nice, places to eat nearby as well as cash point within walking distance.
Parking is on road, free after 6.30pm and on Sunday. Managed to get a space nearby on a Saturday without trouble.
Unfortunately, there were several things that had a negative impact on our stay.
Dirty bathrooms, "breakfast" was tubs of cereal in a communal kitchen, divan bases had seen better days - ripped and dirty. Other guests need to keep their clothes on - man in towel welcomed us home and man in pants greeted us in the morning.
Wouldn't return but wouldn't tell others to avoid either. Simple things put right would really make a difference.

Window was loose and no lock ,my husbands request, for a wedge or screwdrivers so jammed a couple of screwdrivers in the side ,to try and secure window.as manager came up with nothing .so easy access’s from the flat roof outside ,as we found a roofer had been accessing while we were there. Told the manager about the window not locking,he asked in an abrupt manner, what do you want me to do about it,I don’t have another room.Rock band in pub could have been in our room it was so noisy. Room was vibrating too. Due to the band and customers.noise from taps and toilet from other rooms and our room to ,was the noisiest water system I have ever heard ,almost like a nematic drill.carpets stained and worn.NIGHTMARE STAY.only wish I could upload the video of the noise from the band and water .
WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE.

We always receive a warm welcome at the Black Lion. A tapas food menu is served Monday to Saturday and roast dimmers on Sunday. There's a good selection of drinks. There is fantastic beer garden and everywhere is always clean. Our visit today was for a couple of drinks and Sunday lunch. I had roast lamb and my fiance had roast beef. The meals were epic. They are definitely worth it in terms of quantity, quality and price. The tapas menu is also fantastic. We couldn't think of a better pub to call our local.
