The Gallivant's fantastic location has been lauded by many guests for its easy access to the beach and the quaint town of Rye. Its serene and homey atmosphere, complete with cozy decor, makes for a welcoming stay, further enhanced by amenities such as complimentary wine and beach gear.
While the hotel's immaculate and charming rooms are often praised, some guests have called out the high prices for in-room beverages, suggesting the value could be better. The cleanliness and friendly service receive high marks, although a few guests noted occasional service inconsistencies.

Detailed Reviews
The Gallivant is a truly unique hotel experience and the staff certainly go the extra mile. It is an incredible use of space in what would otherwise be an uninspiring building. The bedrooms are exceptionally well appointed and comfortable (I was treated to a luxury garden room) and the bath was a real treat.
The weather turned inclement and the provision of wellies and sturdy umberellas was greatly appreciated so we didn't miss our evening stroll along the deserted beach...fantastic!
Yoga is a passion of mine and the two classes I attended with Louise were very well put together, the yoga mat provided for personal use was of a great standard too.
Unfortunately no one informed me that the TRX class I had booked on arrival was cancelled. I arrived at the summerhouse and was informed by guests using the space for their own personal exercise that the equipment hadn't arrived yet.
Our room unfortunately had a bit of a plumbing issue in that the shower didn't drain and therefore flooded the floor of the toilet. The toilet glugged and gurgled and I fear a blockage maybe imminent if not rectified soon (room 19). It was the only instance where I felt staff did not pay attention, having to request extra bath mats from several people before they were provided. We actually refrained from using the shower to prevent further paddling but lucky for me I love a bath!
The food was inventive, delicious and wholesome. Chef Jamie also shared his knife skills with us in what ended up being a personal kitchen skills lesson.....really enjoyable, we learnt so much it was a good fun thing to do as a couple.
Special mention should also go to Ludo for his genial conversation at dinner and Anna for her exuberant enthusiasm at breakfast.
Finally I must say a big thank you to Agnes for helping me with prebooking meals and events when technology let me down, her help was reassuring and timely.
Our stay celebrated a special occasion which warranted the price point and, whilst it maybe some time before I can justify a return visit, it will remain high on my wish list.
Thank you.

My wife and I had a very enjoyable two night stay at The Gallivant. All of the team were very warm and welcoming, especially Anna with her fun and friendly nature at breakfast.
Check in and check out we’re both very easy, and service was excellent at every touch point with the staff.
Breakfast and dinner were both very good, with all three dinner courses on both evenings being enjoyable. Wine list is well thought out.
Just two suggestions on how things could be even better. We were in the Humber room and found airflow at night very limited. A minor modification to the door could maintain security while allowing for better airflow. Also, the bathroom was a little tired in places and could do with a minor refresh.
Overall though a very pleasant short break made even more enjoyable by The Gallivant team.

We were blown away by our stay. When we arrived, we found out that we had been upgraded to a Luxury Garden Room. The room was incredible. I loved all the quirky features like the books and games in the room. The free-standing bath tub was amazing and the garden was beautiful.
The food was wonderful all round. Breakfast in bed was a real treat and the dinners were magnificent. The staff were incredibly knowledgeable about the wine list and we choose English wines with our meals. The 5pm complimentary glass of English wine was a nice touch too.
I took part in a yoga session on the beach. The teacher was lovely. I’ve never done yoga on the beach before and it was marvellous.
With regards to Covid 19 regulations, we felt that everything had been handled tastefully and at no point did we feel uncomfortable with how the ‘new normal’ was being handled. Face masks were not required for eating areas (the bar area and restaurant) and hand sanitiser was available in these areas for use too.
Overall, the staff made the stay for us. They were so friendly and quick to help. Their knowledge was impeccable and every question we had; they were quick to answer. We look forward to booking in again as soon as we are able to!

I thought the place was exceptional. I was a bit apprehensive about travelling alone but I needed some me time after a stressful week, the staff put me at ease and went above and beyond to ensure my stay was perfect. One member of staff even offered to go and source scallops for me!
Value for money wise this place is fantastic, your stay includes coffee and cake in the afternoon, breakfast and relaxation sessions like yoga, mindfulness beach walks and wild swimming. I loved my yoga class, it was just what I needed.
The attention to detail is fantastic, the owner is an interior designer and that becomes clear wherever you look. The owner clearly has a good eye and all the decor is incredibly tasteful and exceeds Instagram standards! It all created a lovely relaxing and warm atmosphere which is just what I needed. I also loved little touches like bath robes, really nice toiletries and beautiful Egyptian cotton sheets.
I felt thoroughly relaxed after a couple of days of beach walks, yoga, reading and eating!
My only downside to the trip was that a full english wasn't included in the price. I would have preferred to pay more for the room and had that included or have it clearly stated that it wasn't included when I booked.
But all and all I loved my stay, they went above and beyond to make it perfect and I'm looking forward to come back but with my partner next time!

Just back from a lovely weekend break at The Gallivant. The decor and cleanliness of the room and hotel common areas were all delightful. We loved the comfy bed, big TV, and the selection of games in the lounge area. This is also the first time I've found a hair dryer diffuser in the room, which is much appreciated by a curly girl! There are lots of little touches that make your stay feel extra special (wellies for walks, yoga classes, English wine at 5) and everything we encountered from furnishings, to linens, to toiletries were all of the highest quality. The half board system works well and while the menu is currently limited we never left a meal feeling disappointed or hungry. The restaurant service is relaxed rather than of a fine dining standard, but the food itself was very high quality and delicious. The proximity to the beach is unbeatable and you also end up on a bit quieter part of the beach away from the main car parks.
The current prices are very high, and I definitely would not pay anywhere close to the current rates if we were not in this exceptional situation. That being said, I am happy to have had the experience we did, and it provided a much needed break without the hassle or stress of travelling abroad.

For us, The Gallivant was a great escape from London. This stylish and relaxed hotel is a stones throw from the beach and dunes at Camber Sands. We enjoyed a day at the beach, a late afternoon glass of wine and browsing the lovely array of coffee table books scattered around the bar areas. Every detail of health and safety has been considered to make this a relaxed post-pandemic stay. Our garden room opened onto a grass area with deckchairs and felt private due to the jasmine woven partitions. Great shower, great bed. The highlight is the food, thanks to head chef Jamie. Fresh and local produce is abundant on the menu, with lots flavour and options for all dietary preferences. The breakfast menu is also original with plenty of options for all tastes. We left feeling revived and relaxed! The hotel is a 10 minute drive to Rye village and Rye Harbour in one direction and a 15 minute drive to the Derek Jarman house in Dungeness.

We had booked a Sunday night stay for the Easter weekend which had to be postponed due to lockdown. We rebooked for a September Sunday and found that the price had gone up by nearly £100 and that the hotel wouldn't honour the price we had already paid. Unfortunately our visit was disappointing from start to finish and we wish we'd just cancelled when we had the chance!
Chaotic check in, not exactly spotless room, stained bedsheets which we had to ask to be changed (gross at best of times, negligent during covid), 'English wine hour' translated to one small glass of wine, wrong meal bought at dinner, had to ask three times for anything at breakfast, 'Elevenses' is a cookie, could go on... Perhaps most worryingly no bar or restaurant furniture looked to have been moved to adhere to the 1m+ rule.
Positives were a good sommelier in the restaurant and good food for dinner.
When we checked out we realised that 10% service had been added to all of our drinks and we weren't even asked how our stay was, the final kick in the teeth. Came away feeling ripped off and wouldn't return.

Response from Harry Cragoe, Owner at The Gallivant
Responded 10 Sept 2020
Dear @firearcadien We are really sorry your stay didn't live up to your expectations and there was a confusion over price. The price increase is due to our rates now always including lots of inclusive items, breakfast, dinner, elevenses, English wine at 5 and all experience classes like yoga or pilates. We'd also like to say that all our linen is laundered by an industry leading linen cleaning company. Occasionally their and our quality control will miss a sheet that even after cleaning at 60 deg still has a stain on it. This is far from ideal and we are working hard at improving our (and their) quality-control so this never happens. We are really sorry this happened to you but we are glad we could rectify this for you straight away. We are also very confident that our furniture and table spacing allows everyone the physical space needed. We have reduced the the number of covers in our dining room by 35% by removing tables and chairs and the feedback has been unanimously positive so we take great comfort from that. Our absolute objective is to create happiness for all our guests and we are really sorry we seem to have been unable to manage this with your stay. It wasn't through lack of trying and everyone will be saddened that they didn't achieve this. Kind regards The Gallivant

I've been eyeing up The Gallivant for a while now and booked a spontaneous sunny weekend away with my husband in March. The place is from floor to ceiling well designed, thought out and luxurious. The staff are knowledgable, really friendly and helpful. We loved the gestures (white wine at 5, night time teas) that are lovely touches to make the stay memorable. The menu was amazing and the food at a Michelin standard. We LOVED how dog friendly the hotel is.
Unfortunately it did feel like the hotel over glorifies some of their areas which lead to a bit of disappointment. The treatment room is a hut in the garden, this is not a spa. The 'coastal' garden is not really accessible to all guests, only those that have booked the garden rooms. Apart from the restaurant terrace, for a 'beach hotel' I expected a more outdoorsy area, somewhere to relax and unwind with some loungers to enjoy the sun (as an alternative to the beach, great for a sundowner!). The hotel was much smaller than expected from the wording used online, as well as our bedroom. Luckily, we were able to check in 2 hours early, we arrived mid morning to make the most of our weekend away, a 4pm check in is far too late.
Overall, I think the hotel is over priced. Camber Sands is an idyllic area but i feel that The Gallivants pricing is slightly off on its location. It's very remote with little competition (no reason to leave the hotel in the evenings). If the prices were slightly lower with an alternative to the (excellent) fine dining, it would be far more enticing to stay an extra few nights, but at £700pn (£390 for the room) for one night away I'm not sure if we'd return...

Really enjoyed our stay. (Constant) attention to detail, warm reception by all staff who are helpful and friendly - nothing too much trouble. Loved the decor and vibe achieved. Restaurant meal was delicious - every mouthful, beautifully presented, tasty and piping hot with good service. We particulary liked the way they truly source British & local and enjoyed trying the English wine at 5pm (so much so we had a bottle for dinner). An unusal, but good experience (I'm sure 11's would be too, but we had left). I was surprised to see a service charge (of over 10%) on all alcohol we purchased when I looked at the bill in detail at home later, includig wine served with dinner! And I'm not sure why tea and coffee making can't be in the rooms, or bottled water - we could see it had been prebviously and it can work with COVID restrictions.
A throughly relaxing stay anyway.

We had a lovely stay at The Gallivant. It was so relaxing and the food was fantastic. In particular, Anna at breakfast was a wonderful warm welcome to the day, Lucy serving us at dinner was bubbly and fantastic, and Paul B was really knowledgeable about English wines.
The rooms aren't huge but they are well presented and think this is a hotel to wander to the beach, sit by the fire or on the terrace, rather than be in your room.
Would be great for there to be tea/coffee making facilities in the room. We did feel it was rather stingy to charge for cappuccinos/lattes etc at morning breakfast, especially when we charged service for everything (even a coffee when we arrived). But overall, a lovely staff and break away.

No, it's all on ground level.
As mentioned in my previous response children under the age of 8 are not accepted but please do not be put off by the fact that the hotel is on a main road. It is not a busy road and very easy to cross contrary to what some people claim on Trip advisor.
Car park was busy but I managed to get parked ok including when I went out later in the evening. At a rough guess I would say 10-12 spaces in total, not sure how many rooms they have in relation to that
Regards
I visited the Gallivant in February - a cab into Rye was about £10-15. Hope that helps!
Hi
Our Deck rooms have double doors opening onto a privately enclosed patio. The doors can be opened and 'braked' ajar so you can have them open enough for your dog to get onto the patio or not. None of our loos are separate from the bathrooms I am afraid, however in the Luxury Garden rooms the loos are in a separated section of the bathroom. Hope this helps. If you would like more information please can you contact the hotel directly - or 01797 225 057.
