Hotel's Favourite
What an outstanding hotel. On arrival we couldn't believe how grand and beautiful the hotel is, immaculately clean and had a real feel of luxury to it everywhere you went. We went for 9 nights as a family of 4 with a 5 year old and a nearly-2 year old, all inclusive, over the May half term. We are not the kind of people that go back to the same place twice but we are already looking up prices for this hotel next year. We have done a few 4/5 star all inclusive holidays in the Canary Islands and Europe before but this one outshone them all. Room We paid to upgrade to a Master Suite so there was a separate sleeping area for the kids at night - our room was number 3143 and from what i could gather it was the best room in the hotel location wise! The room itself was immaculate and large with a beautiful huge bathroom, his and hers sinks and walk in showers and a huge jacuzzi style bath. The bed was enormous! The air con worked brilliantly in both parts of the room and the black out curtains were a godsend. It was so handy to have a kitchen and dining area with a microwave etc even though we were all inclusive. Modern and stylish furnishing. Location wise this room was on floor 3, same as reception and round the corner from the kids Pirate Pool, and just one floor up from floor 2 where the family pool, plaza and buffet restaurant were. We were so close to everything but far enough that the we couldn't hear the noise of the evening entertainment at all of an evening - just perfect. Pools The kids pool (the "Pirate pool") was fantastic for younger families. Great fun for the kids and with the pool being the same shallow level all the way around it felt very safe. A lovely warm temperature too. The family pool was fantastic. A little chilly at times but a great set up and plenty of sun loungers. The infinity pool is just stunning to look at and swim in (although it is salt water and rather chilly). The little areas mid-pool with raised parts for seating etc were a lovely touch. We didn't try the adult only pool so can't comment. Towel stands were manned constantly with fresh towels always readily available and the sun beds were very comfortable, most with umbrellas that were essential to keep in the shade (the constant breeze means you never get hot and easily don't realise how strong the sun is). Food/Restaurants I was blown away by the quality of the food in this hotel. The buffet (Pangea) had the best quality and selection i've ever seen at an all inclusive for breakfast and dinner, something for everyone and hardly ever any waiting or hustle and bustle to get to anything. The ice cream and sweet station was an absolute winner with the kids. The staff were always so polite and friendly and accommodating, doing their best to seat you where you preferred. The terrace out the back of Pangea is just beautiful to sit and eat - would definitely recommend. Some mornings we were serenaded by a violinist or saxophonist at breakfast which was a wonderful surprise. A slight lack of lunch choices, but the 3 a la carte restaurants that are available are lovely. Again we couldn't believe the quality of the restaurants and the food - it's not often you get such good a la carte options on an all inclusive. The Italian (L'Olio) was delicious and a firm favourite. Such a beautiful setting with the glass walls just at the end of the plaza with views of the ocean, and their Focaccia was to die for. Oasis was lovely (HUGE portions) but often a lot of flies around which was a bit annoying. The main lunch restaurant Agave was in a gorgeous setting right next to the infinity pool and the service was great, just a slightly more limited and niche menu. Apparently there were snacks available morning and afternoon but we never needed to try these as we were always so full from the meals. We visited the Ice Cream hut by the infinity pool next to the Oasis restaurant regularly - the servers there were fantastic and the ice creams delicious with a huge range of flavours. Whilst lunches and dinners only included wine/beer/cava and soft drinks, the wine was very nice and there was plenty of access to so many branded drinks and cocktails the rest of the day. The strawberry daiquiri and aperol spritz were a delight! Entertainment The kids programme was a little confusing, with kids club locations/availability/timings changing from day to day so you had to be on top of the itinerary. The mini club (for over 4/5 year olds) generally was great, fantastic staff and a great setting where they do structured activities/themes each day. It ran 10-1 most days and some afternoons 3-5:30, and some afternoons/evenings they would have other optional activities which looked good fun, but we just weren't quite organised to book as timings were quite rigid. The water carpet they bring out to the family pool was fabulous. There were a few kids surprises along the way - at certain times we felt like we were in Disney World! Eating breakfast on superhero day and in walks the Hulk and Iron Man - amazing. Then eating lunch one day and giant dinosaurs walked past us with the Jurassic Park theme tune playing as there was a dinosaur encounter activity going on near the plaza, the kids absolutely loved it and the random pop ups gave a magical touch. There wasn't a set mini disco each day which was a little disappointing, but there was usually something going on for the kids at varying times between 6-8:30, including bouncy castles some nights. The childrens disney show was fantastic - great quality of entertainers, they clearly pay for good quality entertainers. The same can be said for the evening entertainment - very high quality and great fun, and the kids loved it too running around the plaza and watching the different dancers and acts that appeared on the various stages around the plaza. The creche was available for children under 4. In all honesty the creche room didn't appear to have very much in it in terms of toys/entertainment and it was VERY expensive, at 30Euros for 1.5hrs or 50Euros for 3 hrs. We used it once and it was lovely having some child free time, but my youngest daughter wasn't keen on going back in again so we didn't use it again. It's a good service to have available though and the staff were great. Location There isn't much around the hotel to be honest, but the main part of Tenerife where Siam Mall is is just a 20-25minute cab ride away (about 35 euros) so was nice for a change of scenery. If you're looking for a relaxing family stay then this is perfect! Criticisms My main criticisms would be the lack of bars/drinks service throughout the day. If you were round the pirate pool, the nearest bar was by the family pool and you had to go back in the hotel, down the stairs or lift, then out over to the other side of the family pool, then carrying drinks back to the kids pool from there wasn't the easiest. There are buttons around the pool to press for bar service but they rarely turned up at the kids pool, sometimes waiting 30-60 mins before anyone came. Better access to drinks from the kids pool is definitely an improvement that can be made. My only other criticism would be lack of lunch options. The setup with the various restaurants on all inclusive is a little confusing and a lot to get your head around in terms of what was open when and which ones you had to book. The app didn't work at all for us so we just asked reception or the restaurants about bookings (which were always no problem). At lunch, it's unusual to have no buffet option at an all inclusive so if you hadn't booked the mediterannean (Oasis) or Italian (L'Olio) restaurants, you were limited to the small mexican style menu in Agave which grew a bit tiresome by the end. There were often long queues for this restaurant at lunch time and it seemed to take quite a while to get people seated. To be fair, however, on those occasions we just went to Oasis or L'Olio and asked if they could fit us in without a booking, which they always did. Overall, once you've settled in and got to grips with the whereabouts of everything, what floor each pool/restaurant is on and what lifts to use, and the timetables and booking systems for restaurants and kids stuff, its a fabulous hotel and I couldn't recommend it highly enough. The pictures don't even do it justice how beautiful the setting is. Thank you for a wonderful and memorable holiday Gran Melia - we will see you again soon!

I originally stayed at the Gran Melia in November 2019 and had a great time. I was keen to return and my husband and I booked the Red Level package to enjoy several additional benefits including having a more adult only experience. Our stay was very unsatisfactory especially given Red Level is not a luxury upgrade, the general cleanliness of the rooms is not acceptable and we found a cockroach in our wardrobe. The level of customer service is also appalling, we have had no support in dealing with the issues raised. Upon our departure we were going to raise the general cleanliness and upkeep of the room, but this was raised sooner than expected given we found a cockroach in our wardrobe. The wardrobes and drawers smell musty/damp, some of which we couldn't use as the smell is so strong. I was packing to leave and a cockroach fell off one of my dresses. After several phone calls to RedLevel reception, no one came to help and we had to therefore find the cockroach and kill it ourselves. After several more phone calls, no one had come to clean up the mess. There was no apology or offer to move rooms. When we spoke with RedLevel reception prior to dinner we asked to speak with a manager the next day and confirm timings. Again we received no apology and when we returned to reception after dinner, no one was there and no one had contacted us to discuss our issue the following morning. We therefore had to go to the main reception to speak with customer care the following day. Although we appreciate that Tenerife has a tropical climate, we have stayed in much more rugged hotel environments and never seen a cockroach in a room. The level of cleanliness in the rooms will likely attract such insects and this doesn't fit with a five star hotel. We also experienced the following issues: - The two additional RedLevel restaurants are not open at lunchtimes and they were only open for dinner 5 days of the week. - The Bistrot is a breakfast area and not a fine dining restaurant, we found the set up very strange and the service was extremely slow. We were in there for nearly two and half hours. - We had to rely on lunches at Oasis and Agave which is far from an adult only experience. - The beach area is manic, we couldn't get into the eating area for lunch and each beach area was filled with the general public. - There is no buffet lunch available so options are extremely limited for lunch. - All inclusive drinks are only until 11pm. We were not informed on this upon arrival and this isn't advertised on your website. - The Garden bar in the RedLevel was meant to be open every day, but it was always closed and when we managed to order a drink from a concierge, we were often forgotten and our orders didn't turn up. - Guests from outside the RedLevel were being served at the pool bar which increased wait times. - RedLevel guests are meant to get priority with reservations, but we didn't experience this. When we asked for restaurants to be booked within the 48 hour window, this either didn't happen or the times were wrong. - When we first booked the trip it was advertised that RedLevel guests can book all reservations at once upon arrival, this then changed to the 48 hour rule which is not satisfactory. We raised our feedback to RedLevel management before our departure and we were offered a free upgrade to the RedLevel upon a return as way of compensation. We explained that we would not be returning to the hotel given our unsatisfactory stay and that this compensation was more beneficial to Melia given we'd have to pay thousands of pounds to return. We were asked to e-mail our concerns to request a reduction in the cost of our stay, but were again offered compensation beneficial to Melia in the way of Melia points. We have been back weeks now and Gran Melia keep taking ages to respond to our messages and don't even bother to read the detail of our e-mails before responding. This is extremely disappointing given Melia is meant to be a luxury brand and guests pay a premium to stay at their hotels. We are hoping to escalate our complaint now within the wider group. This hotel used to be great, but we would not recommend it to anyone.

Whilst the hotel is beautiful, the restaurants need to up their game. The buffet food was cold & very expensive. The Italian was nice. We found trip advisor restaurants with a 5 rating which were fantastic & cheaper. The room was dated although had everything needed. The balcony was not cleaned in the whole 10 days. The tables by the pool were never cleaned.

This hotel is outstanding. I’m a big fan of the Gran Melia chain in general, however there was nothing I could fault with this one. We spent a week here in November. The hotel is truly stunning, the staff were exceptional and the food was beyond fantastic. The selection at the buffet was extensive, nothing was over cooked or dried up. It was all perfect and delicious. The room was fine, we were in a sea front room with a balcony. The decor was a bit dated but the rest of the amenities at the hotel made up for it. This hotel is clearly very well managed and runs to perfection. I am the biggest critic ever, so for me to give 5 stars is major. We will go back next nov God wiling.

Pros - landscaping is lovely - ice cream is tasty - Jakob at the oasis bar is exceptional - Jorge at the oasis restaurant is great - seems to be enough sunbeds - bouncy castles and water carpet great fun for kids - plaza lovely area - some of the cleaners were amazing - the view from our room was beautiful Cons - pools are freezing (even kids pool), kids were shivering after 15 minutes - rooms need a lot of work to get them to a 5* standard. Doors not opening properly, lights not working, cracked and chipped glass tables/side tables, shower leaks all over bathroom floor. Poor finish in the room. - air conditioning in room could not cool room below 23 degrees Celsius (said it was 19 degree Celsius) - long queues for breakfast, lunch and dinner - vegetarian food selection is awful (unless you just want to eat cold salads). Not separation of vegetarian food so meat spoons are used for vegetarian food and meat. So if you want hash browns for breakfast, you have to use bacon tongs. Mislabelled food (or food with no labels at all) so three times we got a dish which then turned out to contain meat (a vegetable omelette contained meat). Very easy for every item at the buffet to have its own spoon/tong for serving so you aren’t using the same one for four different dishes - construction noise was incredibly loud at the family pool first couple days of our stay. Quite a lot of construction in general around the hotel (buffet area shut off) - the staff just don’t seem to care or want to work there. Lots of staff on their phones. Staff standing around chatting instead of serving people at the bar or restaurant (there was a queue of 5 people and two bar staff were having a laugh). Gran melia need to pay their staff more or treat them better so they actually want to work, happy staff equals happy guests. - we chose this hotel as it was supposed to be family friendly but to navigate this hotel with a pushchair is impossible! You cannot get from your hotel room to the bar/infinity pool/ice cream shack easily, you have to take two lifts and walk a very convoluted route - if you are sitting by the family pool, again there is no step free access to the pool bar/ice cream shack or toilets so you have to take a very long route as no lifts nearby either. Without a pushchair it takes 2 minute walk, with a pushchair it’s a 10 minute plus walk. So if you are looking for a family friendly hotel that is pushchair friendly, this is probably not the one! Overall it is not a 5* star hotel. Plenty of other better 5* hotels in Tenerife for a similar price so go stay there instead until Gran Melia improve the rooms and standard of service. I also felt very sorry for the reception staff as they were just having to deal with a lot of complaints but it wasn’t their fault, it’s the hotel managers who need to step up and run the hotel better.

Dear Ms. Georgie, Greetings from Palacio de Isora, a Gran Meliá Hotel! Many thanks for your review of your recent visit. It is delightful to hear that the landscaping of our resort met your expectations and that you enjoyed our ice cream. We are also pleased to acknowledge the exceptional service provided by Jakob and Jorge. The abundance of sunbeds, the enjoyment your children found in our bouncy castles and water carpet, and the charming atmosphere of the plaza are all aspects we are proud to offer. We are glad that the view from your room added to the beauty of your stay. We have taken note of your concerns regarding the temperature of the pools. Our infinity pool is one of the largest salt-water pools in Europe, and maintaining a temperature that is comfortable for all our guests can be challenging due to the varying weather conditions. However, we understand the importance of this aspect of your stay and will look into ways to ensure a more pleasant experience. The issues you encountered with your room are concerning, and we are currently in the process of refurbishing our facilities to enhance the comfort and style that our guests expect. We regret any inconvenience caused by the air conditioning and will ensure our maintenance team addresses this promptly. We understand that waiting times and dining options are crucial to an enjoyable stay, and we are continuously working to improve our service efficiency and culinary offerings, including vegetarian options. We apologize for any mislabeling or inconvenience at our dining facilities and will take immediate steps to rectify these oversights. The construction noise you mentioned was part of our ongoing efforts to improve our resort, and we strive to keep any disruption to a minimum. We are committed to providing a welcoming and accessible environment for all our guests, including those with pushchairs, and we will review the routes to ensure better accessibility. Your feedback regarding our staff is invaluable, and we will reinforce the importance of attentive and caring service to enhance the guest experience. Our aim is to embody the signature warmth of Gran Melia, and we will take your comments as an opportunity to further train our team in delivering the intuitive personal service we are known for. All of the team hope that we may be able to see you again in the future. Kindest regards,

The hotel is very presentable although some areas do need attention, I would not recommend all inclusive, this hotel is all about making money, we went bed and breakfast so, the buffet breakfast was very nice but, someone asked for brown sauce and was told there would be a charge! It’s 1,400 Euros to up sell as they put it to all inclusive, the all part of it is not understood as there’s not very much included, local wine local beer and be careful because there’s a sneaky surcharge always around the corner. We sampled the mini bar and obviously there was going to be a charge, we were curious, a very small bottle of coke is e3.50, one tea bag is 1.50 see the list in the photos, you get one complimentary bottle of water and that’s your lot. So, we used the Euros 1,400 (cost of up sell), for drinks and meals outside of the hotel, after 7 days of lunch out including drinks, drinks and snacks for the hotel, evening meals with drinks, a trip to Los Cristiano‘s for a day out with a meal in our favourite Indian restaurant (tandoori Hut), some shopping for presents and we haven’t been tight, we are going home with 350 Euros, this hotel does not understand the meaning of the word ALL, it’s out for every penny they can squeeze out of you. Busses are plentiful and right outside the hotel, modern and comfortable, our trip was 14 Euros return, Brilliant. We won’t be coming back to this hotel.

We are on day 4 of a 7 day holiday. Having the most amazing time. Our expectations have been well exceeded after reading some of the negative reviews. Beautiful hotel, polite and friendly staff, room Spacious and well designed. Greenery around the hotel beautiful. Occasionally a small queue whilst waiting to shown to your table ( as per 5 star etiquette) Would definitely revisit.

On arrival first impressions was a beautiful reception area. The receptionist was quite unhelpful and told us to do everything in the app. Once downloaded the app we couldnt book restaurants for 48 hours bearing in mind we were only there for 4 days. When we go to book the a la carte it’s fully booked and that seems to be the tone of the holiday . Couldn’t get into restaurants when we wanted to , breakfast hall was we 20 deep every morning to be seated. Sunbeds were reserved and in a 5 star hotel you do not except this. Shows were good however it was a struggle to get a seat . Service was very poor, you seemed invisible to the waiters. We’ve staying in a lot of Meliá hotels and the service in previous stays has been a lot better To summarise the hotel is absolutely beautiful and could be a fantastic holiday experience with a few tweaks to staff and service After reading the reviews after booking the holiday , they are very accurate !

Additionally, we are reinforcing our staff training to enhance our service levels and ensure that our guests feel seen and attended to at all times. Me and my partner stayed at this hotel for 2 nights in mid-November 2023. This is our 5th time in Alcala, however we normally stay in a family property. This time we decided to spend a couple of nights in the Gran Melia before going into the house. We booked directly through Gran Melia, with only bed and breakfast included. Positives: - The hotel and grounds are truly exceptional. From an aesthetic point of view it's the best hotel I've ever stayed in. Both the interior and the gardens are incredibly well kept. The central plaza is truly something special, and makes for an incredibly event space. - Pool area. Largest saltwater pool in Europe I believe. Takes a good 15 mins to swim from one end to the other at a leisurely pace. Lots of different features in the pool too. A few other smaller pools dotted around for specific groups of people. - Sunbeds. Always seemed to plenty available, despite some people clearly doing the early morning sunbed routine. Lots of different areas to choose from. - Breakfast choice. The selection of food and drink on offer was really strong. - Room. Absolutely loved it. The decor was really attractive unique, and the room was well kitted out. - Setting. Always loved Alcala, but the hotel is in a lovely setting both day and night. The vibe on the central terrace in the evening was fantastic, very tranquil with beautiful views of the sun setting behind La Gomera. - Entertainment. Loved the live music each evening, and loved the show put on for guests on the Saturday evening. - Bellboys. Really helpful bunch and really pleasant. Negatives: - The service isn't really in line with what I'd expect from a 5* resort. Most of the staff were very friendly, however the service was very slow at a number of points. There is a lot of queuing in this hotel. Especially at breakfast. - Check In was the longest ever hotel check in process I've been through, mainly because the desk staff are answering the phone while talking to you! During our check in the desk attendant we were speaking to took 2 separate phone calls while checking us in, both calls in excess of 5 minutes long. It's not great practice in any service role, but in a hotel of this calibre it is crazy that they do it. Phone calls should be being taken by back of house staff, especially during busy periods. - While we were queuing for check in we were approached by a salesperson from the Gran Melia timeshare offering. I didn't fully understand what was happening but we basically got booked in for a timeshare meeting the following day in exchange for a gift. We chose a free 50 min massage for my partner in the onsite spa, which we later found out wasn't available, so changed it for a €100 discount on spend during our stay. The meeting lasted around 70 mins... something I was happy to listen to in exchange for the gift, but boy, they really do go for the hard sell! Be really careful to not get tied into something you don't want! - Food. In fairness we didn't really sample the food offering, but the one restaurant we tried (Poolside Mexican) wasn't the best. The portions were incredibly small, and the service was very slow. The food itself was okay. We did want to try one of the other restaurants for an evening meal, but couldn't get a booking. Alcala has plenty of great restaurants at insanely good value for money, so we just went out. Overall, loved the hotel, but some real patchy service. -

Dear Ms. Omega, Greetings from the Palacio de Isora, a Gran Meliá Hotel! We always welcome feedback from our guests and appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts. We are delighted to hear that the beauty and upkeep of our hotel, the unique central plaza, and the extensive saltwater pool left a lasting impression on you. It is also gratifying to know that our sunbed availability, the variety of breakfast offerings, the charm of your room, and the serene evening ambiance met your expectations. Your mention of our bellboys is much appreciated, as we strive to provide intuitive personal service. We have taken note of your comments regarding the service speed and check-in process. While we are proud of our staff's dedication, we understand that there is always room for improvement, and we will certainly address these concerns to enhance our guest experience. Regarding the timeshare presentation, we aim to offer opportunities for our guests to invest in future stays with us, but we regret if this was not communicated with the clarity we strive for. We will review our approach to ensure it aligns with our guests' expectations and our commitment to understated elegance in every detail. As for the dining experience at our poolside Mexican restaurant, we apologize for not meeting your expectations. We take pride in our unrivalled fine dining experience and will revisit our offerings to ensure they reflect the high standards we set for ourselves. We are also currently enhancing our reservation system to accommodate dining preferences more efficiently. We look forward to the opportunity to welcome you back and provide an experience that not only meets but exceeds your expectations, Warm regards, Manuel Barrios, Guest Experience Manager
