Arrived on a Friday afternoon for an overnight stay and dinner with friends.

First visit to Hambleton Hall and we were not disappointed. Tucked away on the headland, the hotel commands stunning views across Rutland Water and we had a fantastic view from the Lake Room on the top floor.

The hotel has a small and intimate feel, looks beautiful, is surrounded by immaculate gardens and Rutland Water beyond and seemed as popular with families as with couples.

Warm welcome and escorted to our room, which was beautifully appointed and had an exceptionally comfortable bed. We were blessed with fine weather and a fan was provided in the room and already cooling it before we arrived. I mention this as it illustrates the whole experience of our stay - unhurried and relaxed, with all the small details thought of in advance.

The staff were unobtrusive and very capable, social distancing was in operation but not overbearing and in no way diminished our enjoyment. Whilst there were rules in place regarding use of the pool, we were more interested in the cuisine.

Whilst the tasting menu was not available at this time, the menu that was available offered a good choice. The food was beautifully presented, simply delicious and it was a memorable evening.

For an intimate, relaxing stay, in a beautiful hotel with exceptional food and flawless service this is up there with the best.

My wife and I, on the occasion of my wife's birthday. I've reviewed the excellent restaurant separately.

A lovely place to stay. Our excellent room ("Lotus") had a lot of space and a lovely view of Rutland Water, as promised.

Some very nice touches such as shortbread biscuits in the room, having some maps showing various local walking routes with 2 cereal bars for sustenance and a selection of wellington boots available to borrow located by the front door (many of the walking routes are quitemuddy in places in winter). We walked one route one day and a different one the second day.

Very cosy bar with a real wood fire. Unsurprisingly given the history of the place and its location there are quite a few links to field sports (hunting/shooting) dotted around.

Nice comfy large bed. Indeed, the only flaw with the room was that the door rattled in high winds which I eventually cured using the door wedge provided for the inner door at about 2:30am.

A lovely extravagant treat and well worth a visit.

The massive breakfast we had brought up to our room was excellent too.

We always go to a country house hotel for a few days around new year. We have tried 20 over the years but this year we found the perfect place - Hambleton Hall. The public rooms are fine not fantastic but they were never so full you could not get a table and sit and have tea or coffee. The dining room has a Michelin star and rightly so - we had dinner at such places before but never breakfast, the choice was great. And the standard of food at every meal was outstandoing The bedroom was fine and the grounds looked great though we didn't explore cos of the cold. But the staff!!!!! This is how you do service. Friendly without being over familiar. Helpful. Engaged.
We are already booking to come back in summer.
This place is expensive but we have never felt that we had such great value for money.

In May this year we booked a two night stay with breakfast and dinner for the beginning of September. We looked forward to our much needed break. I liaised with the hotel regarding times for pre dinner drinks followed by a table for two in their restaurant on both nights.
On Sunday at 8.30 pm I received a phone call from the hotel to tell me that, as they were very busy, our later dining time was now fully booked and we would have to be at our table by 7pm “at the very latest”.
I was disappointed, our cocktail hour is an enjoyable time for us, a time to wind down & relax before dinner which would have been the highlight of our stay. I told the member of staff (who was never rude, just unhelpful) that we did not wish to be rushed, nor eat too early. She said she was merely “managing our expectations” and would have to speak to the restaurant director.

Well Hambleton Hall, we are more used to our expectations being met at establishments such as yours, (or often exceeded), not merely managed.
I cancelled our reservation.

We recently treated ourselves to a short break at Hambleton Hall and stayed in one of the lake-view Master rooms (Middlehurst).
The young lady on reception was extremely delightful on checking in and took us in person to our room, which really generated a 'wow' upon opening the door. A fantastic vista looking over the gardens and Rutland Water.
We were lucky enough to enjoy a late September swim in the heated outdoor pool, which really made our break. Spoilt by unseasonably warm, sunny weather, this was a lovely experience.
In the evening we enjoyed a delicious dinner in the dining room. Food and service were top-notch. The young cheese-waiter was very helpful when helping us to choose which cheeses we wanted to savour.
Overall, it was a relaxing, delightful break and we will soon be booking again for next Summer.

Stayed overnight to celebrate with my parents for my father’s 80th birthday.
We had informed the hotel of this occasion and I’m extremely grateful that they acknowledged this and made our visit very special.
The lake view standard rooms we were allocated, Swallow and House Martin, were perfect for us, neighbouring rooms with their own joint entrance hall off the main staircase.
All staff encountered during our stay were very welcoming and friendly, and the service by the staff was second to none during our evening meal in the dining room.
The food amazing, almost too beautifully presented to eat, and ambiance were as expected of a Michelin starred establishment.
The manicured gardens and lake views add to the feeling of this being such a wonderful place to be.
This was our first visit to a hotel since the pandemic and we felt reassured of the measures taken by the hotel, staff and other guests as everyone wore masks in public areas and there were masks, hand sanitiser and gloves available at the hotel if needed. Our bedrooms and bathrooms were also absolutely spotlessly clean.
We can’t wait to rebook and return to relax in the hotel’s beautiful surroundings and experience the wonderful food and service all over again, plus have something special to look forward to in these cautious times.

What a great experience!
After so many months of cancelled holidays, we have at last booked a two nighs stay at Hambleton Hall. In the past we stayed at Gidleigh Park, The Bath Priory and Amberley Castle - all part of the same group. This is the best so far. No wonder they have a Michelin star.
The room was spacious and very nicely decorated, the team was very helpful and polite.
The food was amazing on both nights. As we do not eat meat, the selection was somewhat limited, but adequate. Breakfast was also great, and as we gave our choice of breakfast the night before, service was very punctual.
The scenery around the hotel is great, lots of lakes, birds, sheep and very friendly dog owners walking their dogs.

Excellent value for money. We shall come back.

A very big thank you to everyone at Hambleton Hall for the wonderful service during our stay to celebrate our ruby anniversary.
The meals were simply sublime, service fantastic throughout and our rooms a delight to stay in.
Everyone from reception, housekeeping, restaurant, bar and grounds should be really proud of the exceptional standard you achieve.
We will think of you during the coming lockdown and we wish you a safe return to normal as soon as possible,

This was our first visit to Hambleton Hall, we booked a 2 night special occasion stay and had our dog along too.
Booking went very well, our first choice of dates was not initially available but due to a fortunate cancellation we were able to move to the dates we wanted.
I read up about canine rules and emailed ahead to request a crate for our room, this was all set up when we arrived, along with with a dog towel and bowl. We did mention to the reception we had omitted to bring dog waste bags and she advised she would assist but these never materialised ( we found a few floating around on our morning walk the following day, so whilst litter picking resolved our issue too)
Our room was on the second floor, serviced by a very compact lift. The room was lovely, it was accessed via an L shaped corridor, the bedroom off to one side, a large bathroom to the other. The bedding and towels were very opulent, the decor delightful. A Dyson fan was provided but didn't do much to cool the rooms, fortunately there were plenty of windows to create a small breeze.
We did have a problem trying to get a hot shower, if we turned the dial to where it indicated as hot, it came out cold, we found if you turned it to 2 o clock it came out warm, after many attempts we had almost given up.
We were asked to order breakfast the night before, with the option to eat in our room or the restaurant, as we had our dog we opted for in our room both days. We chose to only eat in the hotel restaurant on the 2nd evening as the menu wasn't extensive and were advised it wouldn't alter much between evenings.
The first breakfast arrived on time and was all of a very good standard, the second was not a good experience, it arrived late after chasing it up, both the beverages were undrinkable, the hot chocolate had curdled and the coffee way too strong. There was a hair on one plate of food and the poached eggs were watery.
The Michelin star meal was very nice and service good. Sadly it was cut off abruptly when we were advised our dog was barking, for those with canine companions remember to cancel the turn down service as our dog was in her crate, as requested, but was clearly shocked when housekeeping came in to close the windows, blinds etc.
I would say our biggest disappointment was the overall staff service, my husband was left 10 minutes in the bar waiting for someone to serve a drink, we then requested a second only to be advised there were on more chilled drinks of our choice. We also felt somewhat pushed out by a party event taking place in the hotel on the Saturday afternoon so we stayed up in our room out of the way. As other guests have commented we noticed that staff do also have a tendency to be a little more attentive to returning guests or diners.
On checking out we had been billed for someone else's meals and drinks from the Friday, this was duly refunded when highlighted but ensure you check carefully when checking out.
It was a shame that small things are somewhat letting this wonderful place down.

I have stayed in many excellent hotels in this country and after deliberation I believe Hambleton Hall is the best.
The food certainly is. Dining is an amazing experience there and although it's one Michelin star I would say it's definitely 2 or 3 star.
The quality of Aaron Patterson's food is second to none.
Every room I've stayed in there oozes luxury and comfort and nothing is too much trouble for the staff who blend supreme attentiveness unobtrusively. That's actually quite an art.

The walk around beautiful Rutland water is a must if you have time

Thank you very much for your question to Hambleton Hall. There are plenty of water sports at Rutland Water from sailing to canoeing to Kayaking. We are situated on the peninsular in the middle of the water and the water sports centre is just a short drive from us. Please have a look at the Discover Rutland website for further details but do not hesitate to contact us on 01572 756991 should you need more information.
