At Grizedale campsite, Bowkerstead Farm we have all year round woodland camping pitches and glamping accommodation! We also have seasonal field camping. Campfires are allowed.

myself and family visited this campsite over the bank holiday weekend and can’t fault it at all. The weather was awful leading up to us going (wind and rain warnings in place), so I contacted the site to ask about the field condition. Not only were they responsive and completely honest about the flooding of one field, they also went out of their way to call me to ensure I had seen the email before setting off. We decided to still go, and the owners were lovely when we arrived and ensured we had a dry pitch large enough as we were a large group (5 siblings with our own families). Paid per night due to adverse weather which most sites won’t allow on a bank holiday, and found the owners were really friendly and honest as opposed to taking our money and encouraging us to stay despite the weather warnings. The actual site is lovely, beautiful scenery, relatively quiet at night and spacious between pitches. Also very well priced. We had a fantastic weekend and was all glad we decided to come. Would definitely recommend this campsite, and we look forward to returning next year.

Myself, my husband and our husky stayed in the shepherd's hut for 2 nights in December. The hut is set in a woodland area of the farm, with parking close by. My husband is recovering from a leg and ankle injury, at this time of year the ground was wet with mud but access was not a problem, small incline to the hut and couple of steps that we expected. The hut is very basic (off-grid) , this is something we enjoy and we came prepared with duvet, pillows, head torches and some battey powered fairy lights. We also have a jackery power bank but not everyone has one so smaller power banks are helpful for phones etc. Cooking utensils and anything else you would use for camping you will need. The hut had a log stove, wood can be purchased at the farm. The stove heats up very quickly and the hut was cozy warm for all of our stay. No hot water bottle needed.
Bed was comfortable, and there is a small table and 2 chairs. The hut has a small porch and was nice place to have a coffee in the morning, sheltered from the lake district drizzle.
My husband spoke with the owner, very polite and gave us some good knowledge of the area. There are toilets, showers rooms and wash rooms close to the hut near the farm. Basic but clean. This is a working farm but there was not a high amount of noise from the farm, odd dog bark from the sheepdogs but this is expected.
If you are looking for a back to basic get away the shepards hut is a lovely little hideaway.
Only thing I can comment on is there are no tools to brush out the stove after each use or to poke the fire/ burning wood. This was not a mega issue tbh. As this was winter visit it was very quiet and had the place to ourselves. I expect it is very busy in the summer months.

Met here with a group of friends as over four nights stayed in the Pods, The Shepards Hut and the Brook Barn some of us camped. The weather was varied some great days of sunshine and a little bit of rain on one. Day we bought logs onsite an enjoyed having a fire to sit around in the evening. The Local pub the Eagles Head is 5 minutes walk away and serves great food and local ales. Also has free Wifi the campsite had decent 4G signal with EE when I was there. I would throughly recommend the site for a back to basics trip great location, as close to wild camping as you could get, will definitely be going back for some more trips.

The only positive was the beautiful location, everything else was extremely disappointing. The field is very muddy and when we chose the location to pitch there were large areas of dog poo allover which we had to pick up ourselves using our own dog poo bags (lucky we had some). We assumed this was from a previous dog owner on this pitch, however as the weekend progressed we soon realised this was from a dog belonging to the farm and allowed to roam the fields. We also watched the same dog the following day cocking it's leg and weeing on numerous tents whilst owners were out and none the wiser.
The facilities - 1 ladies toilet, 1 male toilet and 1 disabled toilet, so be prepared to queue and these looked like they hadn't been cleaned in a long time. The mirror was filthy, the floors were dirty and the toilet brush was indescribable!! No toilets had hand dryers either. 1 pot wash sink for a whole campsite and we chose not to bother even showering ourselves or the kids all weekend as the showers were so dirty ( 4x unisex showers). The facilities are not acceptable or adequate for a campsite.
There also appears to be no site rules or patrols to assess noise on site is appropriate. The first night was OK, the second night was the worst night I have ever had in 36 years of camping!!!!! There were several groups of adults (not together) who were all up and extremely loud until 1am. The noise was indescribable, loud music , karaoke and no efforts to remain quiet or consideration for others. Others were throwing up next to our tent due to the amounts of alcohol drunk. I know this is out of the sites owners control for who attends however they have no rules on noise and did not come to check adequate noise levels. Both ourselves and our 5&7 yr old child slept so poorly and were exhausted. extremely unfair on kids and we will never ever be coming back here again! We packed up and left early the next morning and will not be returning.

Me and my partner do a lot of camping trips around the country and especially love a visit to the lakes. This was the first time we have stayed at the campsite and it was brilliant. It was one of the most efficient campsites I have been too in the lakes that aren't just out there to rinse you of your money. It is very cost effective for what you get. The facilities are great, I personally seen the owner re stocking the toilets and wash room with items and doing a clean to ensure everyone is happy. You are allowed to have camp fires on site which is amazing and to top it off the owner has sacks of kindling and logs you can buy for cheep so you can have a campfire at night. The owner is very friendly and will chat to you and asks for your honest thoughts and feedback. He also gives you a few tips about the lo Al area and some nice walks. For a campsite it is everything you would need. If you are a person who is wanting luxury then there are pods and huts but again it is a camp site and a working farm so don't book and expect the hilton.

Been camping since I was about 8. This place was spot on. Seen some negative reviews, which have nothing to do with the site, the location, the amenities or the two running the place.
Arrived after the better half, pointed towards her in a brilliant and friendly manner, choice of two fields to stay in. Loads of room, plus as an added bonus, pizza available freshly cooked on a Monday and Tuesday!
For the price these guys charge and the facilities available, the people giving less than 3 stars need to give their head a shake. Many many places in the lakes charge a lot more and give a lot less!
Would 100% come again.

I stayed for four nights from Thursday this August Bank Holiday weekend with my husband and our dog and we were told to camp in the field further away as they put families mainly in the nearer field. This suited us fine as the other field looked busier than ours as the weekend progressed. The field was really large with plenty of space and you can park your car next to your tent. We had a great time with lovely weather despite the fact there were some very large, selfish, noisy family groups on our field, but they seem to be increasingly unavoidable when camping these days, especially during busy bank holiday weekends. Not sure if there are rules about dogs, but quite a few people let their dogs off lead and we saw a dog chase a couple of sheep off our field. We always keep our dog on a long lead when camping. Anyway we know what we're getting going bank holiday weekend so can't moan too much! Fortunately it was reasonably quiet by midnight and we slept well. The lady who booked us in was nice, helpful and friendly and the facilities were absolutely fine for the price paid. The extra portaloos were handy too! If you want large fancy toilet/shower blocks then go elsewhere and you will be paying a lot more for them. Scattered around the field are rock circles for you to make a campfire if you buy some wood from the owners. Nearby is the Grizedale visitor centre and Hawkshead is just a few miles away. The pub 'The Eagles Head' is nearby and is very nice and friendly with a lovely beer garden and great food plus free wifi inside. When we left the campsite on bank holiday Monday our field was very quiet and peaceful for those who want to avoid any bank holiday mayhem, so I would say it caters for all tastes (quiet solitude or fun, family times), depending on when you choose to go. Wish we could have stayed longer and will definitely come again!!

Just back from a 4 night stay! The campsite is amazing. The views are stunning. The campsite has everything you need, toilets and showers are well cleaned, hand sanitizer around the site. There’s is a small kitchen with a freezer and electric where you can charge phones etc. Flexible to pitch where you like. The kids loved the tree swings in the trees and the stream that ran through - we hardly saw them! Can have fires and the wood from the site is so cheap! Arthur the owner can not do enough for you! Always around and is willing to help with anything! We have booked to go back in October and stay in a Yurt! It is a working farm so dogs and cats are around the site. There is a bike/walk trail across from the campsite that takes you to Grizedale forest. We had an amazing time and a great way to end an awful 6 months!

We are just back from a fantastic break at Grizedale Campsite - a truly special place. We spent 2 nights in a pod and 3 nights in the Shepherds Hut both were great. The chance to sit outside both with a fire in the evening was great. The location is brilliant, excellent views, yummy pizza and Curry on the weekend, a warm welcome from our hosts but more than that there is a really fabulous atmosphere. If you love nature, genuine people and the simple things in life - this is the place for you.

Lovely setting, friendly enough. Few facilities though. One urinal and one flush toilet for all the men, and two flush toilets for the women, and one sink for washing up isn’t enough. No policing of noise meant a couple of late night ‘difficult’ conversations with rude imposing neighbours. Not a bad site at all, it’s ok, so close to everywhere you’d want to go, a short walk from the pub, a short cycle to the forest park … but the sanitation facilities need expansion.

Hi Emily, the toilets are next to the farmhouse, probably a couple of minutes walk from the camping area, when we were there over a bank holiday weekend this year they had some portaloos in the main camping field but these were apparently temporary, and not emptied that regularly.

I have just turned up as a solo camper with the dog and been found a space even when the campsite was saying full. Wouldn't hurt to phone ahead though.
There are more places to choose from in the Satterthwaite area.
