Detailed Reviews
The homestay is a short walk from the ferry, down the historic Beach Street. We only had light bags so we walked but there are cheap taxis available too.
The property was well maintained and had a beautifully lush garden. The view from the upper deck was amazing and if we were morning people we would have enjoyed the sunrise from the deck.
The room was clean, airy, peaceful, light, cosy and comfortable. There was a ceiling fan and an aircon for those balmy summer nights. We slept very comfortably. It was quiet and relaxing and was exactly what we needed.
John and Marilyn were incredibly gracious hosts and made sure our short stay here was as comfortable as possible. They invited us to have Xmas drinks with them, and we had a great time chatting with them. We got to know a lot about the local community and the amazing people of Levuka and Fiji.
Breakfast was included with the tariff and the spread by Marilyn was one of the best I have come across in a homestay. She cooked/baked almost everything herself including banana pancakes, coconut and mango bread, chilli and apple relish, passion fruit and lemon butter, banana and rum jam. The fresh mixed fruit smoothie just made our day. There was also cooked breakfast, toasts, variety of fresh local fruits, teas and home brewed coffee.
For dinner there were a couple of options in town and we went with Kim’s Chinese restaurant.
Unfortunately we only had one day here but our stay at Levuka Homestay made us feel that we have to come back with more time at hand and we definitely will. Thanks John and Marilyn, happy new year and all the best!

Being a Solo traveller (60+) what a lovely find Levuka Homestay was, within walking from the town, which shows all of its history.
I was greeted by John and Marilyn who made me feel very welcome and comfortable. The breakfast Marilyn serves up is the best, everything from fresh fruit, fruit smoothie, home made jams, lemon and passionfruit spread, banana pancakes, toast, eggs, all enough to last you all day.
My room was very clean and serviced daily by Matilda or Tala. Nox (the gardener) was very knowledgeable regarding the history of the island and for a small fee took me on a tour of the town and on some walking trails.
Very special people, great home and lovely stay.
My getaway was only for a few days but I would highly recommend staying at The Homestay.

There aren't enough stars in the rating to give this exceptional homestay what it deserves. Not only is this the best place to stay in Levuka ( and likely all of Ovalau Island) but it is worthwhile to make the trip just to spend a few days at this incredibly welcoming accommodation. The rooms are spacious, clean and comfortable with all of the necessary amenities, including a refrigerator, shower with toiletries, a ceiling fan and AC, if you need it. John and Marilyn are extraordinarily gracious and charming hosts with touching and informative stories of their decades in Fiji and in Levuka. They are known and loved in the local community, for good reason. The breakfast is difficult to give justice to in writing. Fresh bread, with a spread of homemade jams, jellies, and marmalade (mango, lime chili, orange, and so many others.) Breakfast starts with a fresh fruit smoothie, followed by homemade banana pancakes and coconut bread. Then there is the cheese plate, coffee or tea, and eggs to order. The common spaces are very homey, with lots of books to read, and a spectacular view overlooking the town and the harbor. Town is only about a five minute walk, with lots of historical sites to explore along the way. John and Marilyn will arrange for drivers to take you around town for a guided tour, if you would like, or farther out to the many sites to see both north and south of the town. There are several ferry lines that service Levuka so there are generally at least two sailings a day in each direction between Suva ( 2 hour bus ride from Suva itself, coordinated with the ferries) and Levuka. A very relaxing, memorable stay Levuka Homestay. My only regret is not being able to have spent more time there. Plan accordingly.

My wife and I have visited 9 countries in the South Pacific and this is up with the very best places to stay irrespective of price. For value it is in a league of its own. John and Marilyn are superb hosts and a glass of wine (or three) on their terrace was a travel highlight. The rooms are beautifully designed and built. Levuka itself is old style Pacific with lots of history and interest. It is the friendliest place you are ever likely to visit. Everyone greets you with Bula and if you stay any length of time you will have more friends here than you do at home. Thank you John and Marilyn! Also Nox for showing us around.

Levuka Homestay is undoubtedly an exceptional stay because of the hosts John and Maurilyn whose knowledge and love of Fiji is exceptional. The suites are designed to blend into a sloping block of land with extensive tropical gardens within easy walking distance of the old main street of the colonial capital which retains the allure of the colonial era. The local people are friendly when the area is secure to walk around at any time of the day. Fellow guests from different parts of the globe are interesting. While the dinnig optinss in Overlau are not exciting or reliable the breakfast at the home stay is exceptional

Our stay at the Levuka homestay was great for our extended family and fit all of us comfortably in 3 rooms/villas. It was clean and practical. Their homestay is surrounded by beautiful gardens and an amazing view. Our hosts John and Marilyn made us feel at home and helped with any questions we had. We traveled to Levuka to find the shop my father and his siblings were born in. With the help of John and Nox (staff at Levuka home stay) we were able to find the shop in the town which brought much joy to my father. Nox gave a walking tour of the town as well which was very informative. The breakfast made by John and Marilyn was better than any five star hotels we have stayed in. It included fresh fruit smoothies, coffee, homemade banana pancakes and coconut bread, eggs and bacon. There were also homemade jams and condiments. Our stay with our hosts was great and we recommend to anyone visiting Levuka to stay with them. You won’t be disappointed! Thankyou again John and Marilyn for your Fijian hospitality.

+1
The homestay is the best place we have ever stayed. John and Marilyn are amazing hosts and are a very friendly couple, who make your stay so special, they become friends very quickly.
Our room was lovely with everything you could need. It was cleaned every day by Matilda and another lady. Nox the gardener kept the gardens looking amazing, we loved our daily chats with all the staff. Lovely friendly and genuine people.
Marilyn’s breakfast is totally amazing, it’s made with all fresh ingredients, a mix of different fruits, toast and so many jams, chutneys with so much flavour, toast, muesli, pancakes, coconut and pineapple bread, eggs, bacon, cheese, smoothies , coffee etc. All served with Johns amazing stories re the area and people. We certainly did not go hungry during our stay, we never needed lunch, and only had dinner a few times during our stay.
Levuka is like going back in time, very relaxing. The locals are so friendly, they take an interest in the tourists. They are all so happy with amazing big smiles. You won’t go far without someone saying “BULA”, which means Hello.
Although it was cyclone season while we were there, we only had rain at night, it was gloriously sunny and very hot during the day. It’s certainly a place to relax in, and the homestay is definitely the best place to stay in town.
Horizon is a lovely restaurant, food is good with so much choice, staff are amazing and make you feel so welcome. They never forget a name either, which makes you feel so special.
We will certainly miss Levuka and the people.
John and Marilyn you are an amazing couple and we will miss you so much.
Keep doing what you do best.

Absolutely loved this place. John and Marilyn were amazed and made the most beautiful breakfast each day. The homestay is a short walk into the main area and the wharf is not far as well. If we went to Levuka again we would definitely stay here again.

Just thinking about Levuka homestay makes me smile. I have stayed there a few time and I can not say enough wonderful things about John and Marilyn, the staff, the levuka town, and the breakfast (oh the breakfast)!! When I return home to America every couple of weeks or so I will longingly remember the levuka homestay breakfast. I have never had a breakfast that good, anywhere ever. Highest reviews from me! I Love this place!

John and Marilyn have created a beautiful retreat on a hillside in Levuka. Their attention to detail made this the best stay of our two weeks in Fiji, and their hospitality was so appreciated. We were especially touched when, upon our arrival on the ferry at dinnertime, we were invited to accompany them other guests and some of their local friends to dinner in town. What an inclusive gesture and a lovely introduction to Levuka. And then there's breakfast! And happy hour! Thank you John and Marilyn for such an idyllic experience.
