A wonderful location, a short walk to the river in Dovedale and the famous stepping stones. Such a warm, friendly and comfortable hotel, we have stayed here on a number of occasions and never been disappointed. We love to go in the winter months for the cosy evenings in front of their log fires after a bracing walk along Dovedale. The food and beer is very good, the rooms clean, warm and comfortable. The view from our room was spectacular. I’m sure we will be returning for many years to come.

In a beautiful setting the hotel is still living a little in the past; perhaps that is part of its charm. Having stayed in one of the more expensive rooms with a comfortable bed it would benefit from a fridge and some sprucing up. Better lighting, local tourism information and perhaps a box of tissues would be an inexpensive way to make a difference. Staff are excellent, rooms clean and food quality is as promised.

I asked for a view, but you be pushed not to have one. Mine, overlooking Thorpe Cloud was stunning. The hotel itself is of its time. That's not a criticism, just an observation because it fits the landscape. Stood on a hill and yet overlooked by bigger hills, the scenery wins hands down. A small comfortable room, with a small comfortable bar and lounge. The dinner menu was pretty good, the breakfast OK. Staff very pleasant. They don't look the sort to be put off by a bit of weather! Would I return? A hands down YES. This is a pretty basic *** hotel, but the location!!

The location and the beauiful views make up for the ugly decor which desperately needs updating. Rooms are spotless at least. Water pressure in shower was poor. All the staff were friendly and polite.

We recently stayed for one night in their Superior King room, which included breakfast for two at a total cost of £155. Our experience, however, was a bit mixed. Upon our late arrival, we had some trouble finding the reception area due to the lack of adequate signage and lighting, which made the search somewhat challenging. The check-in process raised an eyebrow when the staff suggested settling the bill immediately, giving the impression that they had doubts about our ability to pay in the morning or if they suspected we would leave without paying too. We were informed that the bar and restaurant kitchen closed at 8 PM. Given our uncertain dinner plans after a long day of activities, this wasn't a major concern. Our Superior King Room was spacious and comfortable, but the decor felt rather dated. The room's furnishings, particularly the patterned curtains, as a same-sex couple in their 20's we definitely were not their target market, we had an age difference of at least 30 years from the other guests staying at the hotel. We decided to unwind in the bar area, and our drinks were added to our room tab, which left us puzzled about the upfront payment request during check-in. The same staff member who checked us in kindly inquired if we wanted to order food, demonstrating considerate customer service. We enjoyed a couple of drinks at a nice window table before retiring to our room. The bed was comfortable, but the small, distant TV was somewhat inconvenient, requiring us to move a cabinet for better visibility. Our night's sleep was restful, and we woke up to confirm breakfast times. We noticed that breakfast ended earlier than expected and hurried to shower. The power shower was nice, but the glass screen on the bath failed to contain water, flooding the entire bathroom floor despite our efforts to redirect the shower head away from the open section. Another item worth mentioning is the poor wifi signal we had in our room, it was insufficient for the Netflix on the tv and our phones could not connect enough to load a simple webpage. We actually had a better connection outside in the nearby cow field than inside the hotel. At breakfast, a waiter asked where we wanted to sit, offering to clear a table with a lovely countryside view. Unfortunately, the table hadn't been properly reset after he had cleared it; some items had to be taken from nearby tables such as coffee cups, saucers and salt and pepper. The stained and self-laminated menus were very disappointing which were out of place for a £20 per person breakfast and a £155 per night room. I'd suggest using some of the £155 I had paid to get some menus printed professionally. I ordered eggs royale with a £3.50 supplement, which felt excessive compared to what you could receive in the Full English, considering the difference in ingredients and quantity too. We were also given only four pads of butter for six half-slices of toast, leaving some dry. My partner enjoyed his continental breakfast, except for the spicy chorizo. However, my eggs royale was unremarkable, despite a generous portion of salmon. Upon checking out, we received an additional bill of £45 for four fairly standard drinks from the previous night and the £3.50 supplement for the eggs royale. This brought our total cost to over £200 for a single night, which felt very steep. Despite the scenic location and the charming building, our stay left us very underwhelmed. We expected more much more attention to detail and nicer touches. We don't often have the time to get away so we thought we would spend a little extra on this getaway, but unfortunately they fell short of the mark. Remarkably, upon checking out, we were not even asked about our stay or even how we slept which left us feeling unacknowledged and disappointed.

Response from Guest Services, Guest Services / Front Office at The Izaak Walton Country House Hotel
Responded 25 Oct 2023
Dear Joe Thank you for your comprehensive review naturally I am disappointed we do get a lot of great feedback so am sorry if we fell short this time. We take all feedback on board and I feel it is important to not only respond to reviews for the reviewer but also other readers of our reviews. I am sorry you struggled to find the reception area, I will review the lighting, it isn't a problem thats been raised to me before but will take that on board. I will review with the team your check in our usual process would be to take payment on arrival or take a pre-auth and keep the account open, we do this for every customer as many hotels would and this is simply a security measure. I see you were allocated room 14, this is widely considered as one of our nicer rooms and receives a lot of requests from returning guests. It is certainly not an area of the building we struggle for wifi but will investigate this. We are an older quaint building of character and our decor in no way insinuates a " target market" as we welcome everybody to the Izaak Walton and I feel it is important I get that across as it is disappointing for it to be suggested otherwise. With regards our pricing and offerings we feel these are competitive and transparent, our team would always be more than happy to get more butter or anything required so again apologies if that didn't come across. Finally I am little confused by your comments about the bill at the end, you had a balance of £32.80 not £45.00 this was including the £3.50 for the breakfast supplement. If you wish to contact me directly at ryan.wheeldon@izaakwaltonhotel.com I would welcome the opportunity to discuss your stay further. Finally thank you again for your feedback, please do consider joining us in the future if you wish to do so please contact me directly and I will ensure you are well looked after. Kind regards Ryan Wheeldon General Manager

My partner treated me to a meal in the hotel restaurant for our anniversary. We had a really lovely evening. Nice and relaxed atmosphere, delicious food (compliments to the chef and team). I make a special mention to Chris who served us so well. He was attentive and friendly and cared that we had enjoyed the evening. Look forward to visiting again.

A very enjoyable single night there with a good dinner and excellent breakfast. The hotel is in a wonderful position and we had a lovely walk up Dovedale before we left. The hotel has, perhaps, a rather old-fashioned feel, especially in the bedroom, but for some of us older clients that is not a criticism. The staff were friendly and helpful.

Everything was absolutely perfect, well, almost. The room was not quite to the standard expected, based on its description, but everything else was 100% spot on. From our initial welcome, the staff were friendly and efficient throughout. The food was of excellent quality and very well cooked. The location is superb too with the beautiful view of Thorpe Cloud. I would definitely recommend this hotel and I plan to visit again.

Had a lovely relaxing stay at the Izaac Walton during the recent hot weather. Enjoyed relaxing drink in the garden before heading to our room. The room was perfect, on the side of the hotel overlooking the beer garden. Nice and quite and the bed was lovely and comfy, felt like sleeping on a cloud. We had booked a meal in the restaurant in the evening and it didn't disappoint. The service was very good and the food was delicious. Will definately be returning..
