Nestled in a picturesque setting ideal for exploring Dovedale, The Izaak Walton Country House Hotel boasts a scenic locale that guests often admire. While the hotel's serene environment and cleanliness receive positive remarks, opinions on service and value for money are divided. Some visitors commend the friendly staff and well-maintained rooms, others are less impressed by occasional disorganization and consider the hotel overpriced. Guests enjoy the nostalgic charm but suggest a refresh of the dated decor and amenities could enhance the overall experience.

In the current climate of Covid-19 the hotel staff are doing exceptional work to keep it open and running smoothly. Hand gel at the entrance, at reception and stairway. The room was clean and tidy overlooking Thorpe Cloud. Daily cleaning is suspended but you can get change of towels, toilet rolls etc from reception if you should require.
Staff in general were working very hard and making sure they comply with social distancing and wearing masks.
There is car park for guests,
The menu does not change but that is expected and being vegetarians Chef Jake, given 24 notice and suggestions, will come up with something, depending on ingredients sourced. If you do have specific request, please inform reception.
This is perfect location for various Peak District walks and surrounding areas (Bakewell, Matlock, Thor Cave etc). Walking distance to stepping stones, Ilam Rock, Thorpe Cloud (which we could see from some rooms and the dining area).
The hotel also caters lunch and dining for non guests.
I recommend this hotel for short stay base and visit the Peak District and enjoy the hospitality in the area.
I hope we have another opportunity to visit the hotel and do bit more walking, the fresh air just revitalises the body and soul. This was just the break we were hoping for and got it.

The hotel is in a beautiful setting in Dovedale. No other buildings or roads in sight just rolling hills, sheep and the river Dove in full, dramatic flow. We were upgraded to a superior room which was very large with spectacular views and a bath with air jets. The bed was huge and really comfy so we had a great nights sleep.
The room was spotlessly clean with new carpet. Also smelt of fresh paint but this didn't bother us. Good heating and plenty of hot water. The decor a bit 1980s in style and not luxurious or stylish but in good condition and clean. We had everything we needed (except a full length mirror would have been good), small tv and tea, coffee etc. Some of the public areas were in need of an update but the staff were friendly and welcoming. There were a couple of cosy lounges for guests to use and a log fire in the main sitting room.
The hotel is a short walk from the famous stepping stones and on to Milldale through beautiful countryside. We braved the wind, rain, flooded and muddy paths for this walk and it was worth it.
Upon our return to the hotel we didn't venture into the bar area instead choosing to eat in the AA 2 star Haddon restaurant. The three course menu is quite pricey but as we were celebrating my birthday we pushed the boat out. The decor was quite dated here too but we had friendly staff and good service. Varied menu such as pheasant, venison, scallops, hake served in nouvelle cuisine style so not hearty portions but nicely presented. Our main comment would be that everything had a bit too much salt. They were able to accommodate a dairy free dessert for me. After a blissful night's sleep we ate breakfast in the ballroom with fabulous views. Everything you could want on the hot and cold buffet plus delicious scrambled eggs were made to order. We are planning to return in the summer to try the bar menu next time . The walks around the hotel are lovely and would be much more enjoyable in the sunshine!

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. I am pleased to hear your enjoyed your stay with us and that the staff were friendly and welcoming, also that you had a restful nights sleep. I am glad you braved the weather for your walk and got to see the Beautiful country around the hotel. I agree the walks are a lot nicer in the drier weather. We are in the process of renovating some areas at present, with the views out the windows of the Ballroom & Haddon being spectacular the Décor is to complement the Country Hotel feel of the Izaak Walton. We will also be launching a new Brasserie style menu at the being of March to offer even more Variety as well as still offering our 2AA Rosette menu in the Evenings. We look forward to welcoming you back in the near future. Thank you again Best Wishes Shura

We arrived a little early and our room was not ready so we sat in the garden to wait.
Reception was very friendly and efficient, all covid safety measures were explained and reservations for dinner and breakfast were taken.
Our room, a standard double (room 2) was quite small and overlooked a farm yard at the back of the hotel but with extensive views over the hills as well. Everything in the room worked fine and the bathroom had a bath with an electric shower over it.
The first evening meal we had was corn fed chicken, this was very tasty but the portions of vegetables were fairly small, on the second night we had fish and chips and the fish was huge.
Breakfasts were very good, you ordered the cold elements of the meal the night before and the cooked part at your table, a time slot was allocated to comply with their covid rules and this worked well. The staff in the restaurant were excellent very professional and friendly.
The location of the hotel was ideal if you wanted to walk along Dovedale, there was a stile at one end of the garden to allow access to the public path, this however was broken and needs to be repaired.
There were gardens with tables around the hotel with lovely views of the hills with sheep and cattle grazing near by.
We had a small problem with the bill when leaving but this was quickly rectified.
All in all a good hotel making the best of the covid restrictions and focused on staff and customer safety.

Spent a night here en-route from Glasgow to Reigate. We had booked and were given a superior double room.

Staff were very friendly and helpful.

Bedroom was dated but had a very comfortable bed. Bathroom was clean with soap/lotion in dispensers on wall instead of the little plastic containers which is a good thing.

The common areas are very dated.

There is a two star AA Rosette rated restaurant on site but we decided to eat in bar. Bar had a little fire and was cosy but were given a table inside another room near bar where atmosphere was decidedly non-existent. Bar itself was a little better but only had one table to eat at which someone had booked already.

Food was average - which is surprising given that the hotel restaurant has a two AA rosette rating. By eating in bar, one gets a plain table top with a knife and fork wrapped in a napkin sort of thing.

Breakfast was charged at £15 per person which was a little steep. I only had some cereal and milk, some scrambled egg and toast and tea. My wife had an omelette, bacon and toast and tea. £30 for this seems excessive.

I am sure that this place is busier in the spring and summer and the atmosphere would be better.

There are new owners here apparently and hopefully they will do something about the dated furnishings.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. I am glad you found the staff friendly and helpful, The bar menu is a completely different style to our al la carte 2* Rosette restaurant menu and is therefore more cosy and informal, which most of our guest enjoy. We are in the process of renovating the Dovedale Bar at present, with rooms to follow. We do offer for Breakfast both continental and full cooked English as well as other items such as Porridge, Eggs Benedict, Eggs Florentine, Smoked Salmon, etc, it is up to the Guest what and how much they choose to have. Looking into your booking you did book room only rate, we do advise that if guest know they are going to have breakfast to book on a Bed & Breakfast rate Direct with the hotel, as this is more cost effective to the Guest. Kind Regards Shura

Finding this hotel by sat nav is easy but the heavily potholed start to the entrance drive was the beginning of a stay in a hotel that lacks any attention to detail, is unkempt and needs a thorough modernisation. This aligned with extremely costly and small portion meals means this hotel needs to raise their game considerably.
The 'superior' bedroom my wife and I had was full of old furniture and needed a proper dusting. It was very hot but did have a fan that could be used. One power point not working at all- impossible top get a plug into it!
On our last day and the following morning there was no hot water. This was naturally reported but still none in the morning. This was very disappointing as after a good day walking a bath or shower was needed.
The bed was far too firm and needed my wife to sleep on the double duvet folded so to ease the firmness. I had to make do with a scratchy blanket.
The restaurant is small portions and over priced. The ceiling has a spider in every corner. Outside doors of this property need a good restoration - one is rotten through and looks terrible.
The outside seating is old and rickety. There are weeds growing along the paths and the borders need a firm gardeners hand.
So, having stayed in hotels for my job and vacations for >20 years on a weekly basis, I must say that I was disappointed with what promised to be a good hotel and the reportedly the best in the area. It had a good reputation.
Clearly that has changed and the owners need to open their purse strings and invest otherwise they will get no repeat business.
My advise is to look elsewhere. There must be better.

My husband and I stayed for one night to break up a trip home. Staff on reception were friendly and helpful. We had a room over the dining room which had an absolutely stunning view! The room itself was somewhat old fashioned, however it was clean. The bathroom definitely needed some work. We had no shower pressure whatsoever which was very disappointing ( I did mention it to the receptionist on checkout and she said she'd advise management). I expect a power shower is required as the plumbing is probably not up to scratch. The bed was very firm and I didn't sleep very well (although hubby said he slept fine). There was a lot of noise from the doors to rooms and in the corridors slamming. This didn't seem to be an issue from 11pm onwards until at least 7am the following morning. We had dinner outside in the bar garden area which again was a lovely spot, especially as the weather was great. Unfortunately many of the picnic/outdoor tables are somewhat rickety and need replacing. We finally got a 'solid' table on the 3rd go (we watched a family have exactly the same issue and also heard comments from another group). The food was nice, but my caesar salad was very overpriced for a main portion (I probably should have queried this as I may have been given the starter size in error, so that one is on me). Breakfast the following morning was very good (recommend the eggs benedict). They still had one-way systems in place throughout the hotel and their Covid protocols seemed up to speed. Would like to come back and see some upgrades/modernisation having been made, which I think could be done and still retain the character and charm that the hotel has.

After a walk in the beautiful surrounds, we were looking forward to a good quality lunch in surroundings befitting the commanding views and living up to the historic reputation of the hotel. But oh dear, oh dear. The beer tasted like vinegar and it took 20 minutes to flush the lines through, change the barrel and produce a drinkable pint. The dining room, in which there was a large party just finishing as we arrived, was dirty with the remnants of the previous occupants’ meal piled on the adjoining tables, with food on the floor, an assortment of knackered chairs and poor lighting. Our order included a smoked salmon and avocado sandwich on brown bread which took 30 minutes to arrive, long after the rest of the food was served. When it did arrive, it was on white bread, the creme fresh was more like margarine and the hoped for humus was missing. There were four small bits of brownish avocado included, presumably the only remaining vaguely green bits that could be rescued from an otherwise bruised or over-ripe fruit. The manager did agree to deduct the £8.95 attributed to the sandwich from the bill. The whole experience was deeply disappointing, the one upside being that we couldn’t wait to get out and start walking up Dovedale again.

Thank you for taking the time to review us. However I am deeply disappointed and regretfully disagree with your comments. When you arrived, Callum spoke to you and explained that we had a large party of 15 just finishing up in the back bar, he said he would rush to get one of the tables cleared for you in order for you to have a table, this would explain why the table next to yours was still dirty as it had just been vacated. The beer at the point you arrived had just ran out and a different barrel needed putting on this would mean the line needed flushing, before another one could be put on, Callum did explain this to you at the time. The Smoked Salmon sandwich does not come with Hummus hence why it would be missing. On the day you arrived the Dovedale room was closed off because a new carpet was being fitted as we are in the process of refurbishing with new tables and chairs already on order. Thank you again and I hope you do try us again next time you are in Dovedale, so you can see the changes. Best Wishes Shura

Overall a nice overnight stay. The situation is outstanding - isolated and in beautiful countryside. The hotel would be typical of a 3 star country hotel - if it was 1970. The Lounge is fine if a little noisy because close to reception. The bar has character but the chairs are threadbare. Good selection of drinks. The dining room had a lovely view and the food was fine dining and plentiful. Service over dinner was excellent - but we were the only diners (although we were kindly warned we would be). Breakfast was superb. Staff were very caring and professional. Our superior king room had a view of the hills but was quite tired and lacked intimacy. Very warm which we liked. For the price (it is not cheap) normally expect towling robes and less stark lighting. Not a cosy environment. The furniture was very dated. Comfy bed. Excellent and huge bathroom.
Everywhere very clean.
Overall we enjoyed the visit but it is only just reasonably priced for the somewhat weary decor and minimum updating. The isolation and pleasant staff are the usp.
Would be more sure I would return if the fittings and offer were updated a little and it was cosier all round. Worth a try despite the reservations.

Thank you for taking the time to review The Izaak Walton Hotel. Overall I am please to hear that you found the staff caring and professional & enjoyed your dinner in the Haddon Restaurant, At this time of year, having the Al la carte restaurant and Bar open for food in the evenings means that sometimes there are only a small number of diners, hence why we do tell people they maybe the only people dining, this then gives them the option to eat in the bar area so we do not disappoint. The Hotel is a country Hotel, with the décor to reflect this, the bar area is in the process of being refurbished within the next few months with new furniture and Carpet in the Dovedale Bar. We do have another further 2 lounges open for residents that are set away from reception and are in a quieter location. I am glad overall you enjoyed your visit and hope that you do return in the future to see the slight changes. Thank you again. Best Wishes Shura

This is our second visit with our first being our honeymoon back in September/ October. Not sure where our first review has disappeared too.

This time our visit was a two night stay, we had entered the Ashbourne Seesaw 10k race and the Izak Walton hotel was an obvious choice to stay.

The hotel is a three star country inn. It is oldie worldy but that adds to the charm of the hotel.

The views are breathtaking with Thorpe Cloud and Bunkers hill dominating the skyline. The Dovedale trail which takes in the famous stepping stones and the Ilam circular walk are within walking distance. Both worth doing.

Ashbourne is only 15 minutes with buxton or Matlock bath only being 30minutes away by car. The hotel is in an excellent location to explore the Peaks.

The restaurant was just as good if not better. The quality is outstanding and pricing is reasonable for the quality you get. The breakfasts are better than those in too hotel chains and there is no queuing up for a substandard buffet. They cater well for gluten free and the bar is well priced too!

Already looking for ward to returning next year!

We’ve eaten at the Izaak Walton many times in the past but never stayed. So when we decided to book a Peak District holiday it seemed the obvious choice as the location is superb. It’s fair to say we had a lovely stay there. Some areas of the hotel are a bit tired looking, but it seems they’re updating them gradually, and we found the staff friendly and helpful. Our room was spacious and very comfortable, but overlooking the back of the kitchen. Once we made sure the kitchen extractor chimney was turned off by 9pm, it was absolutely fine. There is no air conditioning but we did have 2 fans in the room, as it was THAT very hot week in July! The breakfast was excellent and restaurant staff lovely. We would definitely stay again but would ask for a room facing the front with a view.

There was a hair dryer but it was tiny and not very powerful so you may want to take your own. We don't remember seeing an ironing board in the room but I'm sure the staff would sort it out if you requested one.
