Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Fantastic experience one of the best meals ever ! Great choices even for veggies. I had an amazing mackerel starter followed by skate. Others had an amazing lamb dish, cuttlefish and belly pork with cracking crackling. Lovely aspect and views with amazing service we’ll be back .. when we can afford it as it was rather expensive.

On Sunday 24th March we had my husband's 70th Birthday Lunch... The whole day was superb ..and the sun shone!! When our family arrived and walked up the drive there was a wow moment as they overlooked the Derbyshire Countryside. Laura and Ollie looked after us so well as we had private dining room and separate lounge. Nothing was too much trouble and their professionalism and easy manner helped make the day very special. The food and champagne were excellent and we complimented the chef's too (who always work in the background) One of Clive's gifts was Afternoon Tea for 2, so we will be back later in the year with our little dog. Kind regards Georgina & Clive Mariner

Visited for a birthday Sunday lunch. good menus choice and we plumped for the beef Sunday roast which was delicious. Really enjoyed the simnel cake dessert too both being fans of marzipan. It was a glorious sunny Sunday so we were able to make the most of the grounds for a stroll after lunch. Agree with other reviewers about the state of the car park - whilst we appreciate the restrictions I’m sure that the surface could be improved significantly within the guidelines- it does let the property down !

We had lovely stay at this great hotel and restaurant but my only area for improvement would be with the car parking. The car park is on a steep slope and is made of sand/gravel. With all the wet weather recently it has become very rutted and pot holed. It needs a hard surface parking area. I know you don’t visit these places for the parking but it is part of the overall experience.

Response from Jeremy Whitworth, General Manager at Wildhive Callow Hall
Responded 1 Mar 2024
Dear 9gilliann I thank you for your recent review of Callow Hall Hotel. I am so pleased to hear that you thought the hotel was great and the restaurant was as well. Our Car park unfortunately has to stay like this due to the fact the council will not allow us to put hard surfaces down. However, I thank you for your comments we will look into this as we will look at improving it in a way that we can that then improves the guest's experience of the hotel. Kind Regards Jeremy Whitworth General Manager Wildhive Callow Hall Hotel

The afternoon tea for £26 each was very good value for money. Included 4 types of rather large sandwich fingers each, 2 scones each (1 fruit and 1 plain) with a selection of lemon curd, clotted cream and jam, an array of 4 mini desserts and a tea of your choice. However, the service was pretty slow. There seemed to be at least 6 servers but we had to ask for our tea after waiting a while. The table next to us also waited a while for their teas to arrive and then had to remind the staff. Seemed quite disorganised - drinks should be served before your food/cakes. I would return again but for such an amazing establishment, it’s disappointing that you have to remind staff to bring tea when you’re paying for an afternoon TEA experience.

Stayed one night in a Hive, very cosy and clean with very good tea/coffee, crisps and snacks in room. Dined in the evening & had very tasty Artic Char, and cheese board. Breakfast was large Granola with fruit with lovely pot of tea. Sunday was Sirloin and was best roast beef I've ever had. Flavours of all the food was perfect and very well presented. Stay was most enjoyable, staff seemed very professional, attentive and polite and was very relaxed. Really liked the log files in the rooms and the buggy ride if required. Atmosphere and ambience was very relaxing.

We came here on our honeymoon as a very special break. We have since gone back to the area and stayed in a bed and breakfast, which we preferred and found to be better value for money. In summary... The spa was sadly lacking, with average treatments at very high prices. Our bedroom window wouldn't close the whole time we were there, which we were concerned was a security risk, but were told not much could be done other than taping it up. Otherwise, the room was fine, but really nothing special for the price. On the plus side, breakfast was delicious and one of the chefs created exceptional evening meals, all tailored to my very specific dietary requirements. However, on one of the nights a different chef was on and the food was noticeably nowhere near as good, unfortunately. Again, considering what we paid, and what a special occasion this was for us, we didn't feel it met our expectations unfortunately.

A taste of luxury in the Derbyshire countryside. A surprise night away with my husband. I have been wanting to stay here all year as it kept popping up on instagram. We had a suite at the front of the hotel and it did not disappoint. Beautiful furnishings in the room and throughout the hotel, nice touches such as the free crisps/sweets in the room. A lot of thought had gone into the bar and restaurant area. Overall the meal was good though the chips weren't cooked and the soufflé was flat, the manager apologised re the chips (provided complimentary desert-fair enough) and the waiter stated the soufflé' was twice baked so hence its appearance. The hotel is very similar to the Pig Hotels and overall it was a very enjoyable stay.

This is a hard review for me to write. Our second visit to this lovely hotel, and whilst it is still an undeniably beautiful place, I can’t help but feel slightly disappointed with certain elements of our experience. I know this is a very busy time of year for the hospitality sector, but the overall impression I was left with was that the staff either felt desperately undervalued, were not especially well-trained and/or were generally just a bit “over it”. For the kind of prices Wildhive are charging, I don’t think that’s an acceptable response to illicit from your (repeat) customers. Long wait times for food, numerous drink and food items not in stock, forgotten drinks orders and just a general sense that we were - to be brutally honest - not terribly welcome cast a long shadow over what we had hoped would just be 24 hours away from the kids, being looked after. On the positive side the massage treatment we both had was absolutely first-class and the room was lovely, if a bit basic. This place stole our hearts on our first visit when we stayed in one of the incredible treehouses, so I hope this criticism is taken (as it is intended) as constructive. We feel very lucky to have Callow Hall almost on our Doorstep, and it would be such a shame to see it’s standards slip.
