Traditional family owned country house hotel, pub & restaurant tucked away near Thornhill just outside Stirling, serving the finest food & ale since 1635. For the homely touch, we have 3 log burning fires, including a huge open fireplace in one of the dining rooms. The accommodation upstairs is of an excellent standard and the views from the windows capture the essence of being in the heart of Scotland with the magnificent scenery on its doorstep. The Lion and Unicorn is the perfect place to spend a few days soaking up the true Scottish hospitality that we all want to discover. Full of friendly locals, it is one of the few Free Houses left in Scotland, with reasonable prices on beer.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Big gluten free menu and staff take care to reduce the risk of cross contamination with gluten so great for people with coeliac disease. The burger and chips were great with a tasty gluten free bun and chips cooked in a fryer which didn't use gluten.

Stayed an overnight here, what a lovely wee hotel, staff were friendly and attentive, had our evening meal here and was first class. Restaurant was busy so that tells you something. Lovely beer garden aswell. Breakfast was a treat, the lady who served us breakfast was friendly and gave us recommendations of where to go around the area. We will definitely stay here again. My only complaint was the matress was too hard but other than that was a great wee place.

First visit to this often recommended nearly local hotel and restaurant to celebrate a birthday. Welcoming atmosphere and very welcoming staff. Great choice of substantial freshly cooked items on menu, fairly priced. On a beautiful September evening the option to eat outdoors in a well presented garden was lovely. Although the restaurant was busy staff worked at a double pace to make sure diners were more than happy, we were. Will definitely visit again, the knickerbocker glory was indeed glorious.

Lovely pub and really welcome staff. We arrived at 22 because of our delayed Flight. They we're very helpfulf and warm. The room was very cosy , clean and the breakfast had the best bacon we stayed in our Scottish holidays. The price was absolutely the best for the quality. The next day we spent the double in Pitlochry but the room and bathroom didn't have the same quality.

We had a lovely lunch today with our friends. The food was excellent and the choice was very wide. The prices were very reasonable in these tough times. Both waitresses were very friendly and welcoming. We intend to come back.

Amazing home cooked food! Great service and very friendly staff and locals! I had the steak and ale pie which came with side of veg, the beef was so tender and the gravy amazing!! my husband had the steak sandwich again a great cut of steak the best he’s had in a sandwich. Our son had the kids fish and chips just the right size and was lovely plus he got a desert all for £6.50. Very good price for the whole meal. Would definitely recommend

Traveled Mid November 2022 - I was thoroughly impressed with my experience at the Lion & Unicorn Country House Hotel in Scotland. The location was ideal, not far from the William Wallace Memorial and the drive to the hotel allowed us to take in the breathtaking countryside. The room was cozy and comfortable, making for a great night's sleep. The staff was incredibly friendly and accommodating, always going above and beyond to make us feel welcome. The highlight of my stay, however, was the delicious food. I highly recommend the Heritage Tomato Salad with Grilled Goats Cheese and Balsamic Glaze, Baked Highland Brie, Baked Three Cheese Macaroni, and the Steak and Belhaven Best pie. We dined in an adorable room with a grand fireplace and the bar was equally charming. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone visiting the area!
