Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The staff here are very helpful but the food disappointing. Very expensive and the vegetarian options were inadequate and overpriced for small portions. The food was extremely salty and almost inedible, we did pass this on to the waitress, it felt very unhealthy.

This is our third visit but not for some time and we were keen to return. Booked a table for lunch and the service was wonderful - very attentive and warm and was especially child friendly. The food was standout - smoked trout, crayfish & scallop rissotto, cod with mussels, sea bream with shellfish sauce and a dhal. Good portion sizes and expert cooking. Highly recommend a visit here.

We booked this hotel last minute to break a journey up and see a bit of the Lune Valley and were not disappointed. It’s in a lovely peaceful and calm location, oozing tradition and history with helpful and hospitable staff. There is an excellent dinner menu as well as a hearty breakfast to be had. The bar, lounge and dining areas exude Victorian charm and character including some examples of Hybrid Taxidemy.

Arriving on a late afternoon when it was absolutely throwing it down, we were soon put at ease and led to our spacious room with our two pooches (miniature dachshunds), where we were able to relax for an hour or two before going for dinner. The room was easy access to the outside and provided with poo bags, dog biscuits, dog bowl and a dog towel - how dog-friendly is that?! Also, there was a fridge with fresh milk for that much needed cuppa on arrival! The meal area set up for dog accompanied visitors is in the bar area, which was very comfortable and there were five tables set up with couples and a family and some seven, very well behaved dogs all laying down under the table with not one bark amongst them! Both of us chose fish for the main course. Mine was the cod with a mussel sauce, which was absolutely delicious and my wife chose the sea bream with a curry type sauce, which was excellent. On the following morning I had a good cooked breakfast and my wife chose smoked salmon with scrambled egg, the egg cooked to perfection and served with oodles of smoked salmon. This report sounds very biased towards dog owners but I can assure non dog-owners that the dining facilities are at the other side of the hotel and there is no need to be in proximity of out canine friends if you don’t wish to be! This was our fourth visit to the Black Swan, usually calling in for lunch on the way up to Scotland and it was the first time we have stayed overnight but it won’t be the last! A very enjoyable affordable stay on the last evening of our Scottish holiday. Thank you!

This is the most overpriced, low quality over hyped hotel we’ve ever stayed in. The food is very expensive and the rooms are 1970’s with paper thin walls. It needs a complete makeover and £180 a night is far too expensive. The staff weren’t the friendliest with poor customer service. We’re very disappointed.

Staying at a family house locally we went for dinner at the Black Swan. What a find , excellent food friendly staff and good ambiance. Menus size not to large but with lovely options to chose from. I had the duck followed by lemon tart and my partner had the chicken schnitzel and strawberry pana cotta .

This was a lovely country hotel; the staff were friendly, the food was excellent and the room was well-equipped, with a good shower and bath, separate sitting room and comfortable bed. The housekeeper who looked after us at breakfast deserves a special mention for her kindness. We would have given given the Black Swan a 5 star rating, but... if you are on a walking holiday and need an early night and a good sleep, don't book room six! It is directly above the kitchen and was very noisy indeed till 11.30 on Sunday and midnight on Monday (thank goodness the kitchen was closed on Tuesday!). The noise of clearing-up would have been fine (within reason), but playing loud music with a heavy drum beat, talking and smoking under our window was definitely not fine. This had a negative impact on what would have been a very good stay.

I think I've perhaps had the best roast beef Sunday lunch of my life today. Thank you Black Swan. Horseradish cream. Super crunchy roast potatoes. Cauliflower cheese. Amazing beef. Oh, and beautifully kept Black Sheep beer, and lovely staff - thanks guys!

Our party of six from various parts of Northern England, spent a wonderful 24 hours at The Black Swan. Amazing food, both at lunchtime and evening and staff were attentive, smiling and very professional. We did have a couple of problems which were attended to, to our satisfaction, immediately. In the words of Michael Winner, breakfast "was historic". We will be back. The Harrisons, Gilligans and Andersons.
