Detailed Reviews
We visit Cider House regularly as guests in the B&B. It was a treat to come back to such a beautiful place which is now self-catering accommodation: coming to stay somewhere so idyllic and peaceful is thoroughly recommended as a perfect escape. Cider House is set in the loveliest countryside and watching wildlife from the breakfast table was a wonderful start to our day. The kitchen is well equipped, bedrooms luxurious and we loved tucking up in the snug of an evening. We will look forward to coming back again.

A truly wonderful property set within beautiful gardens. We had a fantastic week with friends made very easy by the fantastic organisation of Bryony and Bertie. The property is exceptionally luxurious and a great place to enjoy both day and night. Highly recommended!

our weekend in this wonderful tranquil place could not have been better. Our hosts were exceptionally helpful and friendly. The house is set in the most beautiful landscape with with walks and stunning views over the Tavy and Taymar in the distance. Our rooms were quiet, with comfortable beds and the decor had an interior designers eye without being pretentious. Breakfast was perfectly cooked with local produce and a lovely honey from a nearby hive. It was hard to leave and we shall certainly return!

The Cider House is a gorgeous property with lovely amenities and servings of delicious food, with the exception of the lemon cake we were served upon arrival, which was dry and stale. The hosts work diligently to ensure that everything is spot on; however, we sensed that they were struggling a bit to maintain their chipper attitudes. Their friendliness seemed forced and phony, and we grew tired of being leapt upon at the front door each time we returned from outside. That said, the house and its setting are exceptional.

Dear HH29March2018, We have failed to receive any response to our correspondence with yourself as whilst this review has clearly been very well researched, having reviewed our records it becomes apparent that YOU HAVE NOT STAYED WITH US as you claim and as such this review has been reported to TripAdvisor for further investigation due to the false and misleading information it contains. We fully respect the right of guests to publish online reviews of their experiences, but likewise as owners we too are entitled to protect our good reputation from such defamatory statements. It is important for all guests to know that when they read online reviews in relation to a business, those reviews are based on a genuine experience otherwise the integrity of the review system will fall apart. We do not wish to waste time speculating as to why you may have created an account to leave such a post but would request its immediate removal due to its false nature and thus prevent time being wasted on this matter further.

We booked just the one night at Cider House. Upon arrival we were greeted by Bertie & Bryony, who were both extremely welcoming. Bertie showed us to our room (carrying my bag!) & offered us tea, juice and cake, which we enjoyed in the communal living area/breakfast room downstairs. Bertie took the time to speak with us, discussing our plans for our stay & giving us recommendations for the local area.
We stayed in 'Pippin' which is one of the cheaper rooms, but you certainly wouldn't have guessed it. Spread over three rooms (bathroom, toilet & bedroom) it was certainly something special! The bed was very comfortable, the views spectacular & the bathroom to die for with its double ended bath & huge shower. There was a wide selection of teas & coffee & even beautiful biscuits (& lots of them!).
Upon returning to Cider House early evening after going for a meal in Tiverton, we were somewhat confused by the door (it turns out it was just us not having a brain between us!) & ended up knocking. Bryony answered & expressed genuine interest in our evening, offered us wine glasses & asked if we'd like to sit in the living room, which we did. She then lit the beautiful fireplace & we sat & enjoyed a glass or two of wine on the very comfortable sofas. Unlike other places, we both felt totally at ease.
Breakfast was absolutely wonderful. There were fresh fruit juices, cereals & yogurt while we waited for our full English. This did not disappoint - even the tomatoes were delicious!
Along with all of the above, you have access to the grounds & get free entry into Buckland Abbey - a real treat! Especially at this time of year with everything decorated for Christmas.
Overall I would highly recommend Cider House without hesitation. The only thing I found at fault (not a fault, more of a personal preference), was that I would have liked some bubble bath or some sort of bath bomb. But this was really no big deal, I couldn't write an absolutely perfect review afterall! :)
Thank you Bertie & Bryony - all of your lovely little touches truly made our mini-break away something to remember!

On our trip through south england we booked two nights in this recommendable B & B. We felt immediately comfortable in our cozy and elegant room and had a very nice, clean and modern bathroom with shower. The breakfast was served in a nice, large living room with a beautiful garden view and was also very good and extensive. Bryony and Bertie are very friendly and helpful hosts. The property is very worth seeing and the garden is beautiful. We would have stayed longer and will definitely be back if we were to travel to this area again. Many thanks from Grit and Markus from Berlin!

Lovely surroundings and a beautifully restored home await, however, I must agree with the earlier post referencing the "strained" hosts.....Basil Fawlty comes to mind. It doesn't matter when a guest stayed, what matters is what they remember from their stay......

Dear AngusAlfalfa, You are absolutely correct that the lasting impressions for all our guests are hugely important, BUT AS YOU HAVE NOT STAYED WITH US as you claim to have done, we are perplexed at best as to how you would be able to pass comment on any aspect of Cider House? A wonderful place in a historic location, where one can recharge, rest and enjoy the stunning surroundings. Bertie and Bryony go out of their way to make their guests feel comfortable and to ensure that their stay is enjoyable. Plentiful breakfast is available daily and the hosts have lots of great dinner recommendations, from gastro pubs to outstanding restaurants. Rooms are impeccably clean, with towels and sheets changed every couple of days. A must-visit B&B in Devon - highly recommended to discerning travelers...

My husband was on the trail of his Drake ancestors so an opportunity to stay in a B&B on the grounds of Buckland Abbey, owned long ago by Sir Francis, seemed too good to pass up. In the event, it turned out to be one of the most charming places we have ever stayed in. An ancient structure, formerly a cider house, tastefully and cleverly modernized to provide all necessary amenities to today's discerning traveler. And the innkeepers, Bryony and Bertie Hancock, were perfect hosts: gracious, thoughtful, helpful in the extreme. They really enjoy their work and it shows. The breakfasts are divine, with a large selection of items sourced locally, and deliciously prepared. We would happily go back there for a week of doing nothing other than reading and a bit of walking around! And we enthusiastically recommend this place to others.
