Rowsley hotels don't come much better than this. We are located a stone's throw from the Peak District National Park. Located on the A6 between Matlock and Bakewell, it's within easy reach of Chesterfield, Sheffield, Derby and Manchester. Each of our eight rooms has digital television and wifi. Our guests can also make use of free parking at the hotel. Sleep soundly in a kingsize Hypnos bed, on the Beaumont mattress, which is filled with a wool-silk mix and has a surface which regulates your body's temperature. The Grouse & Claret by Marston's Inns is often celebrated for its comfortable, spacious rooms and its picturesque riverside location, which is perfect for area exploration and scenic walks. The hotel's cleanliness and inviting atmosphere receive high praise, with modern bathrooms and beautifully decorated spaces standing out. While many guests appreciate the friendly staff, there are calls for improved WiFi and more consistent service, particularly in the dining experience. Travelers also suggest that the value could be better, noting the food and amenities as overpriced.

Spent 2 nights here, room was modern and clean only grumble was the extractor for the rotisserie oven right outside the window about 2ft from the bed it was an unpleasant alarm call at 6.00 in the morning and really loud.
The bar/restaurant area is lovely and really cosy, unfortunately the place is let down by the predominantly young staff who had no sense of customer service and were more interested in gossiping in groups than serving customers.
The manager Gareth was great , really friendly and appeared to work tirelessly while others stood around , he is going to have a job on getting some of the other staff up to standard and really needs to get tough with a few.
On the second morning breakfast was terrible food was greasy and the beans stone cold , the girl on duty stood at the bar and completely ignored customers as she did most of the previous evening, one couple had to resort to placing their order with the chef on one of his many visits to the bar for a gossip.
Lovely place sadly let down by very average food and poor staff , could learn a lot from their colleagues up the road at The Wheat sheaf where standards are much higher.

Good evening, Many thanks for your review, sorry to hear about the breakfast and some of the staff members, we’ve just had a large staff meeting which hopefully has addressed a lot of problems with the staff. Very kind of you to highlight myself! We do have some other shining stars as well. Hope to see you again! Many thanks Gareth

Stayed overnight meeting friends before we visited Chatsworth House.

Difficult to engage with most of the staff but Jayne who served us for food and drink had some great banter and a sense of humour (thank goodness)!

The menu was limited and the quality and and availability of some of the food for dinner and breakfast was poor. A very drab salad and sort poppadoms. After ordering Pain at Chocolat for part of the continental breakfast we were the told they didn't have any. Luckily we had some in the car which they gladly warmed for us!

For a tourist area there was no atmosphere in the pub in the evening and to be honest not many people, but as we are still coming out of a pandemic I guess numbers may be low.

The bedroom however was quite pleasing. We had room no. 2. The decor was good, bathroom clean with an excellent shower, but very warm and whilst the bed was comfortable we got little sleep. Hairdryer was in the room but no iron to sort out those creases.

I guess at £55 for a double room is strictly average but you get what you pay for.

We ordered a cappuccino and hot chocolate and "The Works" for two.
Surprisingly the cappuccino was served with white sugar instead of brown. Brown sugar was available but had to be requested.
A request was made for one of the breakfasts to have the black pudding exchanged for an extra mushroom.
The food was quite tasty, with the exception of the baked beans which were tasteless. They clearly were a very cheap ingredient, which rather spoilt the overall meal standard.
The printed menu didn't reflect the food delivered. It states a flat mushroom, but instead was two small mushrooms, again a poor substitute. Also it stated two slices of black of black pudding, but in reality it was only one.
On paying the bill, I noticed that I was being charged an extra 75p for the "extra" mushroom (another 2 small mushrooms), which I questioned. The attendant said "that's how it works. You can take anything away but are charged for extra". I explained that it was a replacement for the black pudding, not an extra. I was refunded the 75p but that was not the point. A replacement should be just that..with no extra charge.
I have visited this establishment several times and have found it hit and miss, not consistent.
It's a shame as it could be really good with more attention to detail. Also provide what you print...or change the print if necessary.
The staff though were very efficient and helpful.

Nice big rooms with drink making facilities (provided on arrival due to Covid) Face masks are required until seated as is the norm in these toubled times. The weather was awful but it didn't keep us in as there are plenty of places to visit locally. Drinks and meals cannot be charged to the room which is unusual but not a real problem. We stayed for two nights, the Classic Breakfast was excellent and my Wife thought the pancakes and bacon with maple syrup were brilliant. We ate in on both nights and the selection is quite good. The mushrooms in bread crumbs with garlic mayo for starter were ace and the steak was tender and cooked to perfection. I swapped the chips for a jacket potato as I was chipped out after two days. The staff coped well with the company's Covid protocols and got on with things without fuss. Special mention here for our waitress Hannah, nothing was too much trouble and her sense of humour was brilliant.
If anyone with a tourer is reading this we had a walk to the river through the plots behind the pub one afternoon and the shower/toilet block looked immaculate.

Met a friend for a catch up and ordered a beer and steak and ale pie. The food came out very promptly (too promptly) - pie, chips, broccoli, carrots and peas. The pie was fine (obviously bought in, but that's ok), the chips were passable, but the veg was SO BAD. The broccoli somehow tasted of tomato soup and was WAY overdone. The carrots were massively overdone to the point that there was zero resistance when you put the fork in. The peas were cold. Couldn't eat the veg so I decided to just eat the pie and chips.
The worst thing though was that clearly no-one cared. I politely said something about it when they came to collect plates and she just said "thanks I'll pass that on...". No apology or offer of anything. For the price I wasn't expecting it be amazing, but this was pretty awful and definitely not somewhere I'd go back to.

We were disappointed with our lunch experience at the G&C today, after looking forward to enjoying a meal at one of our favourite venues after "lockdown". The half chicken which we each ordered was frankly dry and hard to cut and had evidently been around for some time and and reheated. I heard other customers complaining too. Kitchen staff should have known better to send food like this to customers. I have always had very good experiences here (lunch) and I've written very favourable reviews of the food and the conduct of the staff in particular. This one unfortunate episode will in no way stop me from being a regular to this excellent establishment. I am not a natural complainer, so look upon this as drawing attention to a lapse in quality rather than a complaint, as I know reputations can be compromised by even one lapse. We paid up without hesitation and we will certainly return - I put it down to perhaps the extraordinary circumstances we have been having - anyone can have a bad day.

We booked a table and arrived on time and sat down .apart from hand sanitizer at the entrance . No staff or customers in PPE Or face masks at any point .
We ordered drinks and food And about 5 minutes later we were advised that the rotisserie chicken ( which was the main focus ) of the restaurant there would be a delay of 40minutes on those meals , we therefore changed our orders and waited and waited and waited . We watched other tables who had arrived and ordered after us receive their food . Our waitress advised it was nearly ready after about a 35 minute wait and 10minutes later arrived . We had been there for 75 minutes. When it arrived one steak was over cooked , the fish was disappointingly small compared to what we had seen already go past, the chips were bordering cold , the peas were hard and one portion of chips was half the size of the others , which were not that big in the first place . My daughter was then presented with a steak despite ordering the plant Burger as she is vegetarian .
We did advise the waitress who, was really apologetic , and had been attentive throughout but was let down elsewhere.
We did receive some money off but overall it was very disappointing. There is limited choice overall and vegetarians I wouldn’t bother as there were just 2 options .

This was our last meal out after a 10 daybreak and end the holiday on a sad note. I would not recommend eating here

We were staying in Rowsley over the weekend and fancied a bite to eat locally. The online booking was easy and confirmation was immediate. Social distancing was being observed and we were shown to a table which factored this in.

However the food was grim. The menu is limited and there was no chicken left by 7pm. So we both had fish and chips. It had clearly come from the freezer, so the fish was soggy and totally tasteless and only the upper part of the batter was crispy. The mushy peas tasted of nothing except mush and the chips were like microwaved ones. None of your triple cooked chips here...

We couldn’t eat it and sent it back unfinished and they at least had the grace not to charge us. Until the catering is sorted out I would not recommend eating here. Such a shame as the front of house staff were nice and they have to bear the brunt of dissatisfied customers.

We have visited the claret and grouse on many occasions whilst on holiday in Derbyshire.
On this occasion monday 17th August, we actually left feeling totally disappointed with our meals.
We were taking advantage of the government's 50%off deal and really felt that the claret and grouse had cut back on their portion sizes to reflect this even though they can claim back the 50% off, so they don't effectively loose out.
We ordered prawn cocktail which was such a small portion, then steak which should have been accompanied with a flat mushroom and tomato, but only came with half mushroom and 1/4 of a tomato and very few chips, we also ordered fish and chips but the fish was very dry and tough it couldn't be eaten and again very few chips, we did complain and two more bowls of chips were brought to our table, but really felt that the food qaulity has definitely gone down hill.

Gave this place 2 tries for dinner. The first time I ordered half a rack of ribs. After waiting an age the food finally arrived. I've seen mice with bigger ribs, It was accompanied by a few chips and a small piece of corn on the cob which I had to ask for.. My Grandchildren eat more. When we came to pay the bill we had a money off voucher but we had to wait another age for the manager to deal with the voucher as the wait staff weren't allowed to deal with them for some reason.
As we had a second voucher we thought we would give them another chance. What a disaster. My wife and I ordered half a chicken. When it arrived it was only just warm enough to eat so we sent it back. When it came back it was a little warmer but certainly not hot. After eating part of the leg I cut down to the bone to find that the meat wasn't fully cooked. I checked my wife's chicken and hers was the same. Following several choice words with the manager we left in disgust. Nothing would encourage us to go this awful place again.
