The Bristol Wing is in the lovingly restored historic old police headquarters. The site dates back to the 13th Century and has a rich history – it has been home to a prison, the Chief Constable, a circus troupe, a group of artists and, throughout lockdown, the street homeless. We have now restored and refreshed our Wing and it is once again a commercial hostel. We have a mix of private, en-suite and dorm rooms with great communal spaces on the ground floor with complimentary tea and coffee available. Our ethical and environmental credentials are second to none. We have a newly refurbed building designed to minimise our negative impact on the world (solar panels, high levels of insulation, double glazed windows etc). The Bristol Wing is owned and managed by YMCA Brunel Group and any profits made are re-invested in supporting young people at risk in our communities. YMCA Brunel Group works with young people through supported housing, youth work, childcare, and health and wellbeing.

Detailed Reviews
Well located, clean & welcoming. You don’t expect luxury in a hostel but this was a great experience. My sisters & I were going to a show at The Hippodrome & we like to share a room. We had a room with double bed & bunk beds with an en-suite. There’s nowhere to hang or put away clothes but we were only staying one night & most travelers probably wouldn’t require that anyway. It’s been recently refurbished to a good standard & bathroom was nice & clean. The common area is great for sitting & chilling or making something to eat. There was noise from a local club but earplugs & eye mask are provided so wasn’t an issue.

Response from Sarah Bradicich, Marketing at The Bristol Wing
Responded 21 Aug 2023
Hello, Thank you very much for your kind review, we are so glad you enjoyed your experience. We are so proud to consider ourselves a 'boutique' hostel and we are happy to hear you picked up on this during your stay! We are still very new and working on adding more essentials such as wardrobes/dressers in some of our bigger rooms, so we apologise for this inconvenience. Thank you again and we hope to welcome you back soon! Best, The Bristol Wing team

+1
It was the first time I was in a Hostel. I really liked it. The room was clean and the bathroom was the same. The first person who greeted me at the message board was impeccable (boy with a beard). But later I needed help but the second guy didn't help much.
Would you stay here again? Undoubtedly!

I would avoid staying at the Bristol wing of possible.
The rooms are basic bunk bed rooms, you will need to make your own beds(sheets in a pile at end of bed) and bring your own soap, also be prepared to ask at the reception for toilet paper(slightly embarrassing) as not enough was in the room. These minor inconveniences can be forgiven as we had booked a hostel and weren't expecting luxury.
The reception staff are friendly and welcoming, the beds are comfy and it is in an excellent location.
The reason for the one star review is the way we feel we were ripped off and blackmailed by the management.
A member of our group accidentally pulled down the curtain pole. We were contacted at 6pm and told to pay £200 and the keys to all 3 of our rooms would be cancelled until we did. When we complained that this was excessive we were told it was because they would lose money by not being able to book out the room (I never understood why it couldn't be fixed and still rented out). Since leaving they have changed the reason for the £200 to materials needed to fix it, screws?!?!
The fact that there is no consistency with there reasonings makes me believe it is just an arbitrary sum that they thought they could get away with.
It also led me to ask further questions. They say housekeeping staff discovered it, but there was no housekeeping done in any of the rooms. Was this curtain rail already faulty and they were checking to see if it had fallen down. I'll never know the answer to this but I do know it doesn't cost £200 to fix a curtain rail!!!!

One of the most disappointing reviews I've left. Everything about this hostel was terrible.
We were left a considerable amount of time from checking in to getting our rooms.
The rooms were never cleaned or tidied during our weekend stay, cleaned.
Bedding was not changed, far less made
No fresh towels were provided, neither were amenities such as toilet roll.
Arbitrary and random charges were applied to our bill - without justification.
By far the most disappointing aspect however, was being informed that we had been locked out our rooms due to "damages". We were not allowed to discuss the following day, and were abruptly informed that if the fees were not paid, we would not be allowed into the rooms.
This put a significant dampener on our pre- theatre dinner, and indeed, caused some members of the group to leave (to more accommodating accommodation.)
Despite protestations to the contrary, I am concerned that the charges and forthcoming attitude we received in respect of these charges had been in the offing from the moment we checked in.
TL;DR cheap, until ridiculous unnecessary, arbitrary and unwarranted charges are applied with relish by overzealous staff.

Expensive hostel. For the price you pay, you would expect basis amenities like soap and toilet paper. The toilet room didn't have a working lock on it. This place used to be a former prison, It certainly felt like it.
Locked out of the room, as allegedly caused £200 worth of damage for a fallen curtain and demanded payment, The curtain is a health hazard as it trails along the floor. Friend accidentally slipped on it. Asked why the cost was £200. The reason given was cause it was due to loss of earnings?!!
This hostel is owned by Brunel group. Profits reinvested back into the community. I'm certain this £200 went into someone's back pocket.

Awful place to stay.
The curtain rail that came down was purely accidental as witnessed by myself.
To be charged £200 for this was laughable. I suppose the cost of materials is high at the moment due to inflation, other than that ye must be desperate if ye are charging a group that much.
To hear the floors in the rooms were damaged but in my room is a barefaced lie, from my point of view the only time I made contact with the floor was when I walked on it which I couldn’t help.. You’d need a bloody JCB to damage those floors. I heard nothing about this until I got home.
To be accused of being abusive to staff as a group, please leave me out of this as the only staff member I saw was the one with dreadlocks and the only interaction I had with her was handing over the key. Again the first ai heard about this was when I got home. Do I believe the group were abusive to anyone, not a chance in hell as it would have been talked about before we left. So this sounds like another barefaced lie.
The place itself was arite, unusual but was okay, the rooms were basic with no soap or toilet roll and no housekeeping, I suppose the floor was too damaged to carry this out.
If you are going to respond with a generic copy and paste email “we adhere to maintain the highest standards” waffle waffle don’t even bother
Folks avoid avoid avoid the staff are obviously dodgy

Having booked and paid for my room at the Bristol Wing I subsequently went up to Bristol a few days later on the day of my booking. Towards the end of the day (I was in Bristol for work) I called the hostel to let them know that I was going to be quite late checking in. That is when the issues started.... The receptionist couldn't find my booking, even though I gave her the booking number from my original booking. Having said she would call me back after she had passed this up to management to investigate, I left it over half an hour before calling back again. I was told that no sign of my booking could be found by anyone and that they were fully booked that night and there was no room for me. Checking my emails, I then noticed that there was an email from someone called Jose from Counter.app in my Junk Mail folder. It had arrived the day of the booking (earlier that morning) telling me that there was a error at their end and they had to cancel my room booking. ON THE DAY OF THE BOOKING! They had not even bothered to try and call me to inform me of this pretty serious issue which would leave me in Bristol without a room at the end of the working day. I then called the Bristol Wing again to tell them that their booking agency had cancelled my room, on the day of the booking, without even bothering to call me directly to let me know. I was understandably angry, and upon investigation found that there were no other suitable rooms in my price range available in the vicinity I needed to be, so was forced to spend the night sleeping in my vehicle near to where I was working. The upshot of all this is that over two weeks later, I have still not received a refund of the room charge I paid for my room and now my emails to both Counter.app and the Bristol Wing seem to be being ignored. I am now unfortunately going to have to proceed with getting a charge back from my payment card, just to recover my room charge. I cannot recommend a stay at the Bristol Wing, purely on the basis of my treatment from them and their booking agency. Book with them at your own risk!

Very clean, bright, contemporary renovated but in keeping boutique hostel with incredibly friendly, helpful and professional staff. Big hats off for the way legend Mark and Megan for the way they handled a very unsavoury, obnoxious and rude guest in a very professional manner where all spectating guests wanted to tell him to get stuffed and leave. After travelling around the world and staying in many a hostel this is one has been the best so far. Much to do with the staff as well as the lovely facilities. Well done team Wing! Love ya work!

Really good hostel in the heart of Bristol city. It was very clean, the room was huge, the staff kept our baggage last day by free and also you can use the kitchen of the hostel with the rest of the people to cook or have breakfast.
Un hostel muy bueno en el corazón de Bristol. El hostel esta muy limpio, la habitación era muy grande y el staff guardó nuestras maletas el último día de manera gratuita y también puedes utilizar la cocina comunitaria para cocinarte algo o desayunar.

No soap of toilet roll either
There’s no car park at the place - there are NCP multi stories near by but they are quite pricey overnight - £20ish?
