Nestled in Clifton Village, The Rodney Hotel has garnered acclaim for its cleanliness and cozy rooms, complete with comfortable beds and thoughtful details, though a few guests have pointed out slight housekeeping lapses. Its friendly staff is often celebrated for their professional and welcoming service.
While some visitors have raised issues regarding room sizes and the occasional unexpected charge, the overall value and convenient location close to shops and attractions make it a popular choice. Guests frequently enjoy the hotel's charming atmosphere and handy amenities, despite some remarks about the aging decor.

Detailed Reviews

I’ve stayed at the Rodney Hotel a couple of times for Christmas parties in Clifton, and for the price and location, it’s hard to beat. It’s usually the most affordable option but doesn’t feel cheap or like a hostel. The single rooms are ideal for when I’m traveling alone, and they’re always clean with comfortable beds.
Each room comes with thoughtful touches, like a minibar (at an extra cost) and complimentary tea, coffee, fruit and biscuits. There’s even a cafetière for fresh coffee, but unfortunately, the filter in my room was broken, so I had to stick to the instant coffee instead.
The only downside during my latest stay was the noise. I think my room was near the cleaners’ area, so I was woken up around 7 a.m. by activity and noise just outside the door. Additionally, the shower could have been better—it was lukewarm at best and didn’t drain properly.
Despite these small issues, the Rodney remains a great budget-friendly choice, and I’m sure I’ll stay here again.

Lovely, elegant, arty hotel. Very convenient to our evening venue. Prompted by the room names, a Google search explained the history of the building and Admiral Rodney himself.
Our single rooms were tasteful & perfectly formed (mine was a tad smaller than my friend's for the same money).
Interesting artworks and stylish wallpaper added to its appeal.
Friendly service from all reception staff.
I recommend a stay there and wil be using The Rodney again.

A lot to digest? Read an AI-generated summary of recent traveller reviews.
I was so delighted by the friendly greeting and then the care, warmth and support from the staff, which felt very genuine throughout my stay at The Rodney Hotel. I can pinpoint multiple occasions when a member of the team went above and beyond to ensure I was OK and had everything I needed.
The hotel itself is extremely good value and ideally located for some of the top places to dine and visit in Bristol. You wouldn't need a car due to the great proximity to amenities and sites of huge historical and cultural interest. The transport links from outside the Rodney are also perfectly situated. It is important to state that, despite the convenient situation and accessibility of bars, restaurants and cafes, etc, the hotel is tucked away and one feels peaceful there. It is not noisy and I felt 100% safe as a single lone female.
The room I was in had everything I needed. Including a fridge, which is frustratingly rare in most British hotels. The bed was single and the room very small, but this was exactly what I needed and it felt cosy and clean and was well stocked with tea, coffee, biscuits, fruit and soaps, hairdryers, etc. Fir an additional cost you can purchase items from the well stocked mini bar and eat at the restaurant within the hotel. I didn't, so cannot comment on the food quality. However, the drinks and atmosphere were just what I love.
The shower was hot. The bathroom spotless and the lighting, sockets etc were ideally placed and more than adequate.
In terms of things I would highlight as potential issues are that there is no lift and no ground floor rooms, so this is obviously not somewhere anyone with high mobility issues could stay. I have some myself and did struggle with the stairs but the receptionist carried my bags and brought up items to my room I needed during my stay so I only had to negotiate them a couple of times a day. Secondly, the curtains did not fully cover the windows and it took a lot of effort and faff to get them to meet in the middle. Bearing in mind there are properties behind the hotel, I felt a little exposed at night. However, if the curtains are replaced with heavier, wider style this would resolve the issue so easily. Other than those, I can't fault the Rodney, especially for the value and level of service. I'd 100% stay there again and recommend to friends and family.

Im so happy to hear you enjoyed your stay with us and found reception to be helpful. Thank you for the feedback on the curtains it is something we are planning to change in the future by adding a blind and replacing the curtains to reduce the light and help the temperature of the room. First, the good bits. The young staff were pleasant and enthusiastic. The restaurant was excellent, though if you don't like complicated presentations, you will be recommended to eat elsewhere.
In November we expected heating in our room. What we got was a rationed slot from 19.30 to 21.00 when the heating came on each evening. As the room was in the cellar of the original house; it was cold. We complained but we were told that was unchangeable. There was a convector heating to plug in, but with a complicated system that seemed to be constantly on Error!
The room was tired with a knob off on the small wardrobe and a faulty electrical connection on the top, both potentially dangerous.
The shower panel over the bath had black mould and a bit missing. Also, there was no bath mat.
Housekeeping did not wash used glasses nor refill the main bar.
Not up to expectations. We had hoped for so much more.

This is a chic, timeless, comfortable and welcoming hotel that I will return to when visiting Bristol in the future. My room ,on the ground floor (arranged after a courtesy call the day before my stay when I informed them of my difficulties in climbing stairs) was a small single room. Whilst small, it contained everything I needed and was clean, warm and comfortable. Reception are friendly and efficient! I was joined for breakfast by an old friend who lives locally and we both were delighted with the quality and quantity of the food. I can say that the poached eggs were cooked perfectly, and the sausage and bacon delicious! All in all, a great stay!

Really helpful and interactive staff who were always friendly and communicative.
I had a small single room at the top of the hotel. It had everything I needed, and it was nice to have a view of the street below. It was surprisingly quiet, considering the apparent proximity of the other rooms on the same floor. The final staircase to get to the room is a bit steep, but not a problem to anyone who is physically fit. The breakfast is good and the service was good. In terms of cost, no hotels in Bristol seem to be cheap, but it was the least expensive, and represented good value for money in comparison with others. It's in a nice area, with a street of independent shops and pubs around the corner. I took up the Hotel's offer of purchasing a parking permit for £9 per day allowing me to park in any resident parking space in the area. There are 7 spaces outside the hotel, but they are usually occupied ( first come, first served basis) The hotel building has character ( probably victorian era) and had "kerb appeal". I am pleased that I chose to stay at the Rodney Hotel.

Stayed here in a single room on a friend’s get together weekend . Hotel is in a perfect location in Clifton with the bus stop right outside . Single room was small , but immaculate with a bowl of fruit as well as tea / coffee making facilities
Tom at reception was friendly and very helpful and welcoming.
I’ll be back for sure next time I’m in Bristol and would have no hesitation recommending this hotel .

Excellent breakfast, polite staff. Clean but small rooms. Comfortable bed. Very limited and "demanding" parking places. Room was cleaned when back from work, towels changed but mini bar wasn't replenished. Soap, shampoo were available in room as well as great choices of teas, instant coffees and pack of biscuits. Working desk with sufficient sockets. Strong wifi. Functional curtains, window and furniture.

This hotel is in a great location, with Clifton Village on the doorstep, restaurants and cafes a step away and walking distance (quite a long walk, but still walkable) from the town centre and Clifton Downs with the suspension bridge and local train station.
Comfy bed, plenty of tea and coffee, & even a cafetiere provided, along with fresh fruit.
Helpful staff and room exactly as described.
I've stayed here before and will do so again :-)

All the staff were extremely nice & helpful, the hotel is in a great place for the lovely Clifton area. We didn't try the restaurant (No 4) but it looked good.
The bed was very comfortable, the room was clean and although slightly older decor perfectly fine with Cafetiere, tea & mini bar drinks & snacks.
We used the parking permit from the hotel as parking at the front of the hotel is limited. Good value especially compared to others in the area we'll go again.

Hi
I am unsure if my single room did have an iron, I do not think so, however I am sure reception will be able to help you out, they were very approachable and friendly. Good luck.
No. We paid around £7 a day. We live in London so that seemed like good value to us! Rodney Hotel is much better situated than all the Bristol hotels with free parking.
Give the hotel a ring and ask.
We do serve vegetarian and are able to serve vegana well, just let us know 1 day before. Thank you!
