The place is so dated it’s honestly quite impressive (except the highly modern barriers to the car park to squeeze the £18 a day charge from you).
We got hilariously lost on our first night going up and down endless flights of stairs trying to find our room.
Continental breakfast is included (£12.50 if you want a cooked breakfast) which is more than sufficient but the waitress flicking crumbs off the tables onto the floor with a menu and then tutting at my husband when his bread got stuck in the toaster had us in fits of laughter.
Is it clean? It’s clean enough. The important bits like linen and the toilet were fine, but the coffee (I hope) stain up the wood chip wallpaper in our room left a little to be desired.
The staff were friendly enough, although for quite a young staff, everything happens at a hilariously glacial pace. We didn’t have any problems or requests so cannot speak on their ability to accommodate various things.
The hotel cannot be faulted for its location, you can get into town by foot within 15 minutes.
I genuinely felt as though we were in Faulty Towers or an old BBC sitcom. The entire place was fantastically funny and I enjoyed my stay for that reason, but I’m not sure that’s quite what they are going for. I imagine if you were there for business rather than pleasure it could be quite frustrating.
All in all, a very surreal experience, but I would stay again.

The location is very good, 10-15 minutes or so walk to the centre of the city. It has a large car park, so no trouble parking. And if you book directly with the hotel, as we did, no parking charge either.
The public areas are well presented, but yes, the rooms are a bit tired, and could do with a refurbishment, but a lot of hotels are still struggling after being effectively closed down for 2 years.
The breakfast was very good, both the buffet and the cooked breakfast, no one is going to go hungry.
All the staff were pleasant and helpful, and they always came round towards the end of breakfast service to inform you they would shortly be closing, so as to give you the opportunity to order anything else (as opposed to just abruptly closing everything).
All in all, for what we paid, it was exactly what we wanted.
Small negative - there is no lift, and most of the rooms require climbing stairs.
Good value.

Upon check in, the receptionist struggled to find my booking, but then eventually did. Then tried to charge a £15 damage waiver which, although I didn’t see mentioned on the website I agreed to pay. Was then told I couldn’t pay contactless with my phone, it had to be the physical card, which I wasn’t carrying. I then had to pay £18 for parking (which I was aware of and was mentioned on the website) which miraculously they could accept payment by contactless from my phone. (Parking is free if booking direct with hotel, otherwise £18 per day if booked through a third party site.
Corridors and staircases were tired and worn, especially the carpets, which were threadbare in places. There is no lift.
My room was a single on the 3rd floor overlooking the car park.
See pictures attached, window was mouldy and when opened, had no restrictions on it, so you could easily fall out. Paintwork, wallpaper and carpets were all worn/damaged. There was cracked tiles in the bathroom, the shower cubicle was mouldy and full of grime and the shower head was disgusting. There were cracks in the wall/ceiling. The mattress was worn and had no mattress protector. The duvet was stained.
Restaurant food was nice, but nothing special and quite expensive (£27 for steak and chips). Waitress didn’t know what sides came with meals. Just one waitress covering restaurant/bar, but luckily there was only 6 people in there.
Continental buffet breakfast included which was ok, although slow to be restocked. It was an extra £12.95 for a cooked breakfast.
All in all, a great location but needs a serious update.
"Parking is £18 a day unless you book direct from the hotel. The hotel charge an extra £60 a night on top of what we paid, so not worth it."Read full review
