With the British Government seeming to change its mind about where in the world we can go every five minutes the UK holiday break is all the rage. The problem is that so many places are cashing in after a grim lockdown and charging way over the odds for accommodation.
Fortunately, in Cambridge, a luxury bed and breakfast establishment called Duke House has bucked this unfortunate trend and still offers first rate value for money. Sadly, and doubtless because of it, when we tried to book one of the guest rooms four out of the five were booked and the other was just a bit too small.
Fortunately the self catering apartment was available and gave us ample space alongside a well sized, well equipped kitchen as well as meaning that we could cater for ourselves when we wanted, which is just what we did for one of our three nights' stay.
Being only a 10 minute walk from the historic university centre and with a number of decent pubs within equally easy walking distance meant that we could enjoy the very best of both worlds although do not miss out on at least one of the Duke House's fantastic breakfasts of fresh fruits and a selection of freshly cooked plates that are a treat to enjoy in the light and airy breakfast room.
Any problems or questions are dealt with swiftly and efficiently by Liz who co-manages the establishment with a stylish eye honed after a career spent in the graphic design industry. Fresh flowers were on the table and in the chimney grate on our arrival together with many essential staples in the kitchen.
Having not been away together since December 2019 Duke House provided a wonderfully relaxing break and a chance to catch up with a number of our old friends who we had not seen for far too long.
The next time we visit Cambridge we shall most certainly be booking here and will most certainly be booking early. For a totally relaxing four days there is nowhere we have stayed in Cambridge to beat Duke House.

Our second trip to Duke House and just as brilliant as our first. Lovely comfortable room with nice big bed, enormous and luxurious bathroom and a first class breakfast. We also really enjoyed sitting in the lounge reading the paper and drinking glasses of complementary sherry! Liz is a great host and she has all the little touches just right, including the gorgeous bite size fresh cakes left in our room. Very clean, very well located and a wonderful calm, cosseting atmosphere. Thoroughly recommended (again!).

This extremely well-located Boutique residence is very comfortable, with high quality appointments in the bedrooms (well the tv was a bit basic, but why worry about a tv when you are in Cambridge?) and a most comfortable sitting room. The breakfasts were very high quality, made to order and in particular the granola yoghurt compote was superb, all held together by the charming host, Liz. Made our visit to Cambridge all the more enjoyable for staying at Duke House

From our initial booking to our departure the service was excellent
Tina was extremely knowledgable and helped with finding a florist prior to our arrival, taking delivery of and keeping cool our flowers.
We felt extremely safe in these Covid times, making us feel cared for with clear instructions prior to and on our arrival.
Breakfast was different with the recommendations placed upon us. However it was still a safe, enjoyable meal with only slightly less choice.
The room was exceptionally clean and felt safe
We feel confident about recommending this charming, central, extremely well run B&B.

Tina gave us the kindest and warmest of welcomes when we arrived early in the rain, guiding my husband into the off street parking. Can't fault Duke House but realise what sets it apart is Tina's professionalism and attention to detail. She is an impeccable hostess. We stayed during half term, so before the new nationwide lockdown. Everything was very clean, masks on in the house, and we felt supremely safe and confident. Had we wanted recommendations of where to go or where to eat we felt Tina would supply them - as it was all I needed was to be reminded where Waterstones and Heffers are. Did we have any dietary requirements for breakfast? No, just lots for our 16 year old ever-hungry twins - and Tina served us with a delicious breakfast, with specially packaged up bacon sarnies. We particularly liked the compot and granola. Wellington and Cambridge worked really well as semi private for a family. Having a balcony with table and chairs meant I could work outside after my run round the city. Perfect. Highly recommended for a treat.

Duke House is a stylish and very well-run B&B in the centre of Cambridge. It has been created from an existing house with both imagination and good taste. Our bedroom was small, but this was very fairly stated on the website. However, the bed was properly sized, and there was adequate storage. There was also a very large bathroom with a spa bath (not tried) as well as a shower. Although the bedroom was clearly not a place to do anything much apart from sleeping, this was compensated by a comfortable guest sitting room downstairs, where you can sit and read, look at emails, etc. A very good individually cooked breakfast is served in the small dining room. (You order the previous night.) There are a couple of parking spaces at the rear which may be available, but you would need to check in advance.
From our limited experience - unfortunately one night only - this is a B&B whose standards of accommodation and personal attention would beat many very good hotels.

We had a most enjoyable stay. Tina and Lisa were wonderful hostesses. Very knowledgeable about the area. We stayed in the Wellington room. Which was very comfortable and had plenty of storage space and a nice walk-in shower. You get a tea/coffee tray in the room which is refreshed each day. Fresh milk is available in the communal fridge. WIFi is free and the signal is very good. Breakfasts are a delight. Location is excellent with only a short 5 minute walk into the town. Although close to town the house is in a quiet side street.
All in all a nice comfortable relaxing stay.

This is a stylish, scrupulously clean and spacious B&B. Attention to detail at this place is exceptional.
Really welcoming, helpful and friendly hosts that couldn't do enough for us. Our room was just lovely and had one of the comfiest beds I've slept in.
Little things like the tea tray in the room made all the difference, it was really generous and had a great selection that was topped up daily.
Can't recommend highly enough, I thought it was really good value for money!

Duke House nestles on an unassuming Cambridge street. But the raspberry red front door is the first indication that this is no ordinary house. Beautifully decorated with a unique style, it’s a wonderful place to base yourself for a stay in Cambridge. Liz is a perfect host; warm and friendly whilst organised and efficient. We stayed in the Cambridge suite which was ideal for a long weekend. An extremely comfortable bed, lovely little sitting area and a bath big enough for one of the Cam’s punts helped us to unwind the minute we crossed the threshold. There’s a great choice for breakfast too, all made fresh by Liz using local ingredients. This is a fantastic place to stay, clean and comfortable throughout, with parking on site. Can’t wait to go back. Perfect!

Hello, unfortunately we are fully booked for tomorrow night.
Dear Larksong22
We will never leave guests struggling with their luggage, so please be assured that assistance will be offered where and when it is required.
The Gloucester room is on the first floor and would probably be suitable for you. It may be worth looking at the description and photos of the room on our website.
Best wishes
