We arrived to walk up a driveway that at night is lit by solar lights so phone torch is needed.
The house is austere inside and out with dark panelling. Reception is dark and their is a smell of food. We did get access to our room early.
The main rooms are very dated but the carpets appear to be newer then their surroundings.
Our room had a broken window pane and extensive plaster cracks in the ceiling but the towels and bedding were spotless but everything else needed a good dust. Only one light worked. The electrics were old and involved extension cables.
The room over looked the garden but the windows were dirty. The window frames were deteriorating and the secondary glazing was old.
The bathroom was OK but the shower took ages to drain. Toiletries are provided courtesy of Tesco.
Fire alarms and smoke detectors were visible but the detector flashed all night. Sleep was further disturbed by the sound of a water tank heating up like a kettle above us.
Breakfast was basic but the cooked food was cooked freshly and the staff were pleasant. Other guests were overheard chatting about their rooms and the various quirks. It seems every room had some issues.
The house obviously needs extensive investment.
There is a limit to the amount of accommodation in Ely at reasonable prices in the town itself or short walking distance like this place. This place is reasonably priced.

I was delighted to spend a night at such a charming guesthouse, stacked with character and intriguing features. We were in Ely for a family birthday and another member of my family was also staying here, and our rooms were thoughtfully positioned next to each other. The booking process was smooth and there was good communication in advance of arrival too. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that Nyton was such a substantial building and you could feel that the owners and staff work hard and put a lot of effort into running the place for the benefit of their guests. Perhaps there were some rough edges here and there, but that's only to be expected in a century-old house. I'd rather stay at a place like this than a soulless Premier Inn any day! The piece de resistance was the extremely good breakfast, served with a smile the following morning. I was particularly pleased to find grapefruit on the cereal bar, and the poached eggs were done to perfection. When we return to Ely, I will return to the Nyton!

Definitely a B&B with a difference. Nice room, very comfy beds with a lot of tea and coffee in the room. Very quirky decorating: every wall was a different wallpaper which made it interesting. Very friendly staff, and a lovely large garden backing on a golf course so it was really quiet, with lots of birdsong from the mature trees on the property. A great breakfast, thought I think the owner forgot we were there on the first night as I had to use the cell phone provided to call him for breakfast as nothing was ready at 7:30. He was very apologetic, and breakfast was very good. The hotel is only about 15 minutes walk from the centre of town and the cathedral, and 17 minutes from the train station. There was plenty of free parking.
My sister and I would definitely stay again.

The only thing I liked was the location and there were a few more sachets of tea, coffee and milk than average. It was quiet too and ample parking.

I had the single room up 3 flights of stairs, at one point shortly after I got into my room the owner used his key and came in and started to come in! I heard a key in the door but 2 rooms only a square meter apart on a tiny landing I thought it was the neighbours opening their door! he said he was just checking if everything was ok, as a woman staying by herself I didn't feel confident that that wouldn't happen again.

The room looked like it hadn't been cleaned, maybe it hadn't been used in a while but it could have been checked for dust, I don't mean dust in the corner that you go looking for, I'm talking about a filthy lampshade above the bed, dust on the kettle, bits in the kettle.. the remote for the tv was filthy.. I'm so glad I took a pack of kitchen wipes with me!

I stayed for 2 nights and put the 'clean me' sign on the door, I could tell they had been in as there was bleach in the toilet and the tea cup had been changed, but the shower was exactly how I left it.

The shower was tiny and I looked over the shower rail, it was a powerful shower though.. but be careful it's so powerful that with my back to the curtain I didn't realise that the shower had pushed the curtain out causing almost a flood of water.

I stayed over as was meeting some friends for the weekend, I had originally booked the Travelodge but decided last minute I wanted to be closer to town. I had read a few reviews saying the breakfast was really nice but after seeing how the room was I didn't trust how hygenic the kitchen would be so didn't bother.

will not be staying there again!

Absolutely disgusting - DO NOT STAY HERE!!!
A friend booked me in for the night 18th November 22, I arrived and was faced with a disgusting, filthy room, dirt, dust, insects and spiders, freezing cold and dangerous fan heater and wiring.
To add insult to injury when I rang down to reception the guy try to fob me off by saying it was cleaned that day, when I asked what we could do about it he put the phone down.
I checked under the mattress by the pillows and it looked like years of skin and hair dust and grime, would have been too unhealthy to stay there. It was really difficult finding alternative accommodation as there was a fair in town. I luckily did manage to find the last accommodation in town at about mid-night, but had to pay £153 for the one night.
It is unbelievable there are still accommodations like this around.
He is not responding to our emails or calls now, so guess they have no intention of refunding out £83?

The hotel itself was great. A lovely old place, with a gorgeous garden. The staff were lovely, breakfast was very good. it was in a great location for exploring Ely.

It should have been a great stay, but it was a disaster for me, personally, as a mobility aid user. It was advertised as being asaccessible, and I rang ahead to reconfirm this, but it was one of the least accessible places I've ever been - extremely narrow hallways with series of sharp turns in them that would have allowed no turning space, doors that opened across these hallway etc. I also ended up bursting a tire on the sharp driveway, which is a big deal if you're away from home, don't know any disability repair places, and can't walk. I ended up having to leave my wheels on the road side outside as I couldn't risk bursting the tire again.

If you're able bodied I thoroughly recommend it. It really is a lovely hotel with nice staff. I don't even think they were being shady about the accessibility, like most people they probably thought 'it has a ramp, a ground floor room is accessible'. They did try to assist.

If you use wheels to get about though steer completely clear.

5/5 for general, 1/5 for my stay, hence the average of 3/5

Every thing bad! The proprietor constantly played music at an extreme volume, a level at which the floor in our room vibrated. This started when we arrived ( 6pm), although intermittent at first, when we returned from dinner with our relatives (9.30) the music resumed. At 10.30 I went down to the lounge to ask for it to be turned down. I found the owner sat in the dark, alone, playing the music. He asked if it was too loud? Astonished at such a question, as the volume was ear splitting, he turned it down. I'm uncertain if he was burning particularly spicy logs on the fire, however there was a strong aroma consistent with 'herbal' cigarettes! At breakfast we were subjected to a similar volume emanating from the kitchen , this time accompanied by his singalong, the waiter apologised and noted that this was usual at breakfast!.
The Beds ( we required a twin as I am currently undergoing chemo therapy, to which a good night sleep is important) were a match for the décor, at least 30 years old-see photos, every movement resulted in a squeak or graunch from the mattress springs and bed frame, the floor would have been more peaceful and probably more comfortable. The ceiling had multiple cracks, and the smoke alarm flashed brightly all night. On the wall between the beds was some form of clock/radio - a mystery antique to match the curtains.
The full English was provided in a sea of grease, toast arrived cold and the cereal was stale.
We had originally booked for two nights but not willing to suffer a repeat night, checked out right after breakfast. At checkout the proprietor asked if everything had been ok and apologised for the music, by this point I had read the previous reviews of the hotel and realised that this was in fact the norm for this hotel as others had experienced the same disturbing factors. I simply paid and left. I was clearly leaving because of the noise etc but no offer of a reduction was made and so I was charged for both nights.

This place needs a complete refresh the room was ok apart from the electric shower which drizzled warm water.
Do not eat at this B&B the food both evening meal and breakfast was awful, the poached egg on my asparagus in the evening resembled something that had crawled on the plate with a hard yolk the asparagus was tough, all the food served did not resemble or taste as described I had the pork medallion which was tough to chew, the sauce was watery the chips if that’s what they were were awful, needless to say I left most of it, the breakfast was no better how can you get wrong porridge?? How can you get wrong poached egg on toast?
Without doubt this is the worst place I have ever stayed.
I found the owner to be very rude.
I would never recommend or stay at this place again, avoid at all costs.

The place needs good clean. The shower drain needed unblocking, cobwebs in the clothes cupboard & my uncomfortable bed resounded to what sounded like an old bedspring. Nice staff but not worth the price.

I can only assume that the people who wrote previous negative reviews were very unlucky because I enjoyed my four nights at the Nyton, having been meant to only stay for one night. But I felt comfortable/at home enough to extend for three more nights. My room was clean and very quiet (apart from some noise from adjacent room occupants when they got up in the morning), and had a great view of the amazing garden. Breakfast was good. Also, only 10 minutes walk from the city itself.
I'm a fairly fussy type and wouldn't have stayed beyond my one night if it wasn't good and will definitely stay there again next time I'm in Ely.
