Have been staying at the castle for a couple of month whilst contracting in the area. When i got here work had just begun on refurbishing this lovely, quite large building. The new owners who had only recently acquired the hotel are a lovely couple and also very helpful. They have a pride in their work and the hotel itself. the refurbished bar and entrance corridor/ reception have improved greatly. The bar has a nice friendly atmosphere. Also they have started doing some lovely meals which are usually homemade and also very accommodating as some nights we could not sit down to eat until after 10pm due to our own work commitment. But this was never a problem in fact it seemed to be a pleasure.

Many thanks.

Graham

This hotel has recently changed hands. The new owners are making improvements and have begun by decorating and re-furnishing the dining room and lounge bar area. I stayed two nights recently and they made me feel very welcome, going out of their way to make my stay comfortable. The full cooked breakfast was excellent quality and service exemplary. In time I think this will be a first class place to stay at a lower than average cost.

From the outside this B & B looked OK, but inside it is dated, neglected, poorly maintained, and quite frankly the shower room we had to use which was shared between 5 rooms looked dirty. We were a group of friends with 3 single rooms for one night to attend Newmarket Racecourse....Thank Goodness we were not there for any longer. I actually had to kneel on the floor to utilise the coffee making facilities in the room due to the limited head room! However in contrast to the rooms, the Breakfast room was bright, light, clean with sufficient space for most (but not all) guests. The Breakfast staff were pleasant and efficient. Orders were taken for cooked breakfasts which were very nice. This could not however make up for the poor accommodation and I will not be returning.

We stayed recently as we were attending a wedding, the pictures on booking.com are missleading rooms look nice, our rooms were terrible, we got there late at night it's not occupied by a receptionist so we had keypads codes to get into our room, the rooms were awful dirty, dusty, stains down the mirrors, 2 large spiders crawled out from below the sink in the room, the carpet is sooo smelly I was scared to even step on it in my bare feet, the Dulux window we opened had nothing but cobwebs and black dirty hanging from the inside, we were top floor with shared bathroom which was awful, don't ever waste your money and stay here, the lady at breakfast huffed and puffed her way around the dining room in the morning she was unhelpful at trying to get us taxi s we had to do it ourselves through goodle, all round awful hotel, we really should have got our money back it was that bad, thank God we only were there to sleep as the place needs knocked down it's sooo old and run down. I hope this helps someone to not waste their money staying at this dump of a hotel sorry to be brutally honest but it's the truth.

Very good value for money. Everybody we met was so friendly and helpful when we needed them. The room was clean and tidy, breakfast was lovely and service was always with a smile. Hotel is in a prime location walking distance from the town centre.

This hotel needs to be avoided at all costs. Myself and my family stayed here last weekend. We should of gone home after we spent half an hour trying to gain entry through the key code. We rang up only to be told that the key code had been changed( would of been nice if they had told us) but mistakes happen so we just accepted it. Finally arrived into our room, and by god was it freezing. Husband checked radiators all freezing, it was minus 3 outside and NO HEATING ON ANYWHERE IN THE HOTEL. I did text asking for them to turn the heating on only to be told that it was on and that maybe a guest had turned the radiators off, ( I think not) as no radiators were on in any part of the hotel. Was also told to check thermostat downstairs, but upon doing so,it was a thermostat to stop pipes from freezing. So, nowhere to turn up the never existing heating. It was that cold that we all slept in our clothes. At the time of booking, for some reason my 6 yr old grandson was missed off the booking. I did contact the hotel to rectify this. If it wasn’t for a very excited 6 year old we wouldn’t have stayed here as it was just so cold. This hotel would be best staying at in the summer as a hotel in this day and age without heating on is terrible and it totally spoilt our break to ELY. Will not be staying again. We all sat and ate breakfast in our coats and hats.. ( breakfast was very good) even the cook was in a big thick jumper as there was no heating on in the dining room either.

I booked to stay here and arrived on a Sunday evening 1800hrs having already informed them I may be late.
No reception staff and could not gain entry. After 20 minutes of calling the contact number on the door , being made to feel like a nuisance and being passed from one person to another we finally got given the access codes.
On entering the room we were appalled . Extremely hot and cramped . Shabby worn decor , iron stains on the well worn carpet .
And the icing on the cake very old worn bobbled and stained bedding that had not even been changed.
Since there was not one member of staff in the place we were forced to sleep in top of the bed to abound sleeping in someone else's sweat stained bedding .
We were in room 12 next to the SHARED bathroom . OH DEAR!!!
Very noisy and woke the landing when in operation .no flush on the toilet , mouldy in the shower and in daylight the room was even more alarming .
If this is a castle we were in the dungeon!
We complained the next morning and were duly informed " only workmen stay there and we don't get any complaints",
( WHY SHOULD A TRADESMAN'S CLEANLINESS ABD STANDARDS BE LOWER THAN ANYONE ELSES??)
The manager , Ellie gave us every excuse in the book to avoid addressing our concerns , the girl that made the beds was pregnant , they were changing bedding suppliers etc etc .
On arriving home later that day I found the bed had been made but WITH THE SAME OLD DIRTY BEDDING. Unless all their bedding has stains in the same place then it was the same worn old tired quilt cover and sheets.
My wife again spoke to Ellie ,while I was at work but since there was three members of staff being quite defensive with her she felt over whelmed and quite frankly intimidated .
My wife telephoned me at work and explained the situation .
I contacted Cambridge council environmental health department and lodged a compliant , this is still under investigation at the time of writing this.
On arriving home from work we were left a VOICEMAIL MESSAGE, ( didn't even have the professionalism to talk to us direct), informing us that " having relieved an email from the council and spoken with the hotel directors , they feel it is best if we vacated the premises"
Again our concerns were not even addressed . No senior manager contacted us to ask us the truth of the matter or to discuss what had occurred.
At great expense and inconvenience we left immediately .
I can safely say it is the worst hotel , with the most unprofessional manager giving the worst customer service and the dirtiest bedding I have ever stayed in.
Since I am away working and staying in numerous hotels most weeks that is some award.
I have emailed the company director directly and I have still not received a reply or had my serious infection , prevention and control issues explained .
After four phone calls I eventually received a partial refund for the nights outstanding .
I received a breakdown of costs they have taken for the two nights plus breakfast .
My credit card company is refunding the full amount as we certainly didn't receive anything near the service we had paid for .
In the twenty first century these places should be outlawed , shared dirty broken toilets , dirty bed clothes , grubby cramped rooms and noisy vibrating shower units.
All myself and my wife wanted was the very bare minimum of laundered sheets .
I had nothing to gain by complaining in fact it left me out of pocket and greatly inconvenienced
I have attached photographic evidence to substantiate my review .
Do not fall victim to this absolute Sh*^%#le
.The castle ... Where the customer is always wrong!!

We checked out this morning, what a disgrace of an establishment.
The place is filthy! I have attached photographs from our stay..the complimentary biscuits were out of date, the spoon and cups were filthy, the pillows had stains on them so we had to sleep in our clothes, the shared bathroom (which we didn't dare use) was dirty (black mold and falling to bits). The interior walls are covered in various stains/marks. The top of the wardrobe was thick with dust.

We didn't dare stay for breakfast as we were concerned about the overall standard of hygiene in the place.

For nearly £60 this is disgusting. Some changes really need to be made.

A one night stay in the little town of Ely to visit the glorious Ely cathedral. Sadly the Castle Lodge did not live up to the magnificence of the cathedral. The hotel was in a residential area of the town and had a crenelated stuccoed feature on the outside hence its name Castle Lodge. I was not aware that the hotel was completely unmanned and that checking in was automated through a system of pin numbers on each door. This made the place feel extremely unwelcome and although the room was clean it had an unused feel about it. This was apparent from the soap holder in the shower room which through lack of use had left a leaky blob on the shower tray and the plug which left a bluish mark where the plug chain had been. The décor in the hotel left a lot to be desired. The lobby ceiling had electric wires trailing and notices to rooms were on pieces of paper sellotaped to the walls. I do not think the hotel was good value for money at £85 for the night. Although the price included breakfast I was so put off by the hotel itself I could not bring myself to eat there. I would not recommend it as a place to stay until the hotel has undergone some serious re-furbishment.

Rigsby's letting rooms in Rising Damp are palatial compared to The Castle Ely! There is not one plus point for this dump-dirty sheets, staff wouldn't change them and kept lying saying they had, but I took photos on the day I arrived and left after two nights of my weeks stay as I couldn't face another night of putting my own towels on top of the bed to sleep on😬😬the shared shower had mold and was filthy and made a noise to wake the dead when used, the toilet flush was broken, I wouldn't use the thin old grey towels they provided, the junk dated 'furniture' in the room had holes in and the 70's carpet was filthy. The staff were as out dated as the room and their customer service skills were non existent. I laughed when I read a good revue on trip advisor they couldn't have stayed in the same place as me! No excuse for such a badly run filthy place, should be closed down so no one else has to endure the disappointment of being subjected to such antiquated 70s sitcom rooms, it certainly wasn't funny!!!
