We've just finished our two day break at this hotel. We had a wonderful time, the breakfasts were freshly cooked with plenty of choice and the one night we had the evening meal was faultless. The staff are extremely helpful and friendly. We opted for a smaller double bedroom and this was very clean and well equipped and ideal for our needs - albeit on the top floor! The hotel is well kept with boutique type furniture and the bar was well stocked. Our only moan was the awful WiFi which was very sporadic depending on where you are within the hotel. We will definitely be staying again as there is good parking on site or on the street and it is situated less than a 15 minute walk into the town centre. We love a curry and the Cheshire Tandoori restaurant was excellent, a traditional Indian with good curries on offer, not least a Sunday help yourself banquet for around £12 each - Bargain!!

Lovely homely comfortable reception area with plenty of seating. Brilliant staff, who actually talk to you! Our twin room number 1 was small but cosy and warm. We slept well. Breakfast had plenty of choice and was presented well with quick service. We stayed for 4 nights and had an evening meal on 2 nights beautifully cooked steak and homemade curry, delicious. We walked into Chester (around 15mins) although there us a bus stop within around 5 mins from the hotel. Mini cabs on average £5. Chester railway station is easy to get to, £5 cab. Chester is a great place to visit, plenty of history and beautiful architecture. Lots of restaurants and coffee shops. We took the train to Liverpool one day around 45mins and cost around £6 return another great place to visit with plenty to see and do. Trains were around every 15 minutes. We also drove to a national trust property called Lyme near to Manchester, it was around an hours drive would recommend highly very interesting old mansion and beautiful grounds. I have difficulty in walking any distance so booked one on their mobility scooters to go around the grounds, these are free but book in advance. If you're looking to stay in an impersonal hotel, don't stay here as its far too friendly and helpful!!We would highly recommend this hotel.

Fabulous location, we were able to walk to the town centre in 15 minutes. The bedrooms were clean and comfortable with kettle and TV and en-suite shower and toilet.
Breakfast was fruits, yogurts and cereals and/or fully cooked.
Staff were so friendly and helpful. Restaurant was clean and the food was freshly cooked with a variety of choice for a one, two or three course meal, very reasonably priced too.
It’s a 15 minute drive to the wonderful Chester zoo too.

First impression was not good, the carpets in the reception area were very dirty and stained, the reception area and room needed refurbishment. Room was as advertised (very small). Cleanliness was not good, there were several cobwebs hanging from the ceiling and the light fitting was very dusty. Bathroom basin did not drain easily and grouting around shower was black in several places. Bed very lumpy and uncomfortable. The receptionist was friendly and helpful unlike the owners who appeared indifferent to their guests, we almost felt like we were an inconvenience to them! Dinner was quite awful, in fact inedible. The waitress took my almost untouched plate away without question or comment. Foolishly, we tried breakfast the next morning and again, it was bad. Cold, chewy bacon, cold undercooked sausage and toast that had barely seen a grill. Bare minimum room cleaning, bin emptied but no bed making, clean towels or restocking of coffee etc. There were few positives; the receptionist was lovely as was the breakfast waitress. There was comfortable seating in the reception/bar areas. As there are plenty of alternative hotels in Chester, I definitely wouldn't return to Brookside and can't understand why there are so many good reviews on Trip Advisor - these reviews are very misleading.

Room was as described a small double very cramped but we only needed somewhere to sleep. Could of done with a full length mirror though looked like the screw in the door maybe had previously had one there. Bathroom sink had a crack and toilet seat moved when you sat on it.
We had an evening meal on the first day as we had been travelling all day. For some reason while in the bar unwinding with a drink we kept getting pestered to order our meal 1 1/2 hours before we were eating, so that the chef could prepare it!!! I had a vegetarian Moussaka which was nothing like a Moussaka it consisted of potato, tomato and cheese not an aubergine or any other vegetable in sight. I can cook a better one and I'm not a chef. My husband had the lamb Moussaka which was the same with lamb and felt sick during the night and all morning the next day and couldn't eat breakfast. The breakfast was very badly cooked the bacon was tough, the sausage (budget chipolata) and the grilled tomato were not cooked, the toast was not toasted and the whole breakfast was cold, as was the tea. Did not eat breakfast th ere the again even though it was included we went somewhere and paid for breakfast. No one ever asked you how your food was maybe they knew the answer. The owners mostly ignored you even when you spoke to them apart from the girl on reception, the girl who served our breakfast and the young girl on the bar were quite friendly. Beware the 2 beers for a reduced price offer on the bar it is only certain beer mainly the small bottles of lager but doesn't state that, you only get told when you ask for 2 of something like Hobgoblin or Speckled Hen as they are not included. On our 2nd night we ate out and when we came back to the hotel for a drink although we had a tab at the bar when we tried to put the drinks on it we were told " We couldn't as we had not dined in the restaurant". We said "But we are staying in the hotel" but no they wouldn't let us put it on the tab we already had!!!! Then to top it all while we were sitting in the bar chatting with two other guests one of the staff after finishing eating in the dining room came and sat right behind us, we didn't even know she was there, clearly she must have been listening to our conversation because she suddenly actually joined in. If I have to say what I liked best it would be that the lounge area's had comfy seats but it wasn't a nice atmosphere sitting down there and we noticed that very few guests did. We could not wait to leave.

After a last minute booking for our trip to Chester and a long drive up we were very pleasantly greeted by Glen on arrival. Our room was very well presented and spotless, the hotel itself was just a stroll from the city centre in a very nice area itself and every contact we had with the staff was extremely pleasant. The hotel was quiet at night and the bed was comfortable - couldn’t recommend more!

Staff lovely that I can't fault. Hotel very tired and in need of alot of tlc. Based on the fact hospitality has been shut alot the last 12 months, they don't appear to have done any housing or small repair jobs. No servicing of room due to covid restrictions. At £90.00 a night not what you expect. Our friends paid £52.00 a night at a different hotel and room serviced every day.

Response from , General Manager at Brookside Hotel
Responded 2 Nov 2021
Hello So disappointed to read this review i would like to address the issues you have raised! You mentioned the hotel was closed for over 12 months due to covid . You thought the place could of had repairs and décor done during this time. Yes we were closed for 18 months as forced to from the government . To have repairs etc is impossible when the country was locked down our business closed by the government with no workmen allowed to work on any job or allowed to enter the hotel. As we are a family run hotel we also had to lock down with our children home schooling and looking after our elderly . My husband also spent several weeks in hospital due to having Covid and also unable to do repairs . Still recovering as he was a venerable person . This has been a difficult years for everybody so hoteliers had no exception . Hospitality have been the worst hit so not only are we doing our best to keep our staff working and now are doors open we also have to keep our selves and our guests safe following all guidelines to ensure that. Hence the choice of room service, We have given all our guests a choice of room/ house keeping service at check in , Some guests prefer not to have any body enter there room and others are happy to have service the choice is down to every individual guest . But the choice is definitely there. You mentioned your friend paid only £52.00 a night for there room if this was a 3 star hotel with Private residents Bar and Restaurant then they did very well and it shows how desperate hotels are at the moment to try to hang on to there business which sadly is the case , You touched on the hotel looking tired it is a Victorian house that we like to keep to tradition , We do not want it to look modern and corporate like so many other hotels . We like to keep with the theme and Historic City of Chester. Thank you for your lovely comments regarding my wonderful staff

A lot of positives from our stay.

•Location is great for city centre. Taxi ride cost approximately £5.

• Very friendly & genuinely nice staff.

• Very tasty cooked breakfast, plenty of choice & a good selection of cold breakfast too.

•Good value for money.

• Limited parking, but plenty of street parking nearby if car park is full.

• WiFi is fast enough.

• Nice bar, with good selection.

Unfortunately, we have one big negative to comment on.

Although our room was quite small ( which I was aware of from reading previous reviews) this wasn’t a problem as we wasn’t actually in the room much apart sleeping & getting ready.
The negative is the bathroom !!!!
This was very dirty, with lots of mould, lime scale & general dirt. The bathroom in room 23 is in need of a SEVERE DEEP CLEAN.
We did inform reception when we checked out & they said they would look into it.
So almost perfect stay if only the bathroom was clean

We arrived early but Jack on reception let us use one of our rooms to store luggage. He was very professional and friendly, giving us a quick check in and directions into Chester. The rooms were clean and tidy we had room 2 shower was a good size as was the bathroom it's self. We return back at night time before the bar closed so had a late drink in the sofa area,. Where we spoke to a young lady believe it was the owners daughter didn't catch her name but she was lovely. Good sleep although the room was quite hot. Breakfast had a good selection of hot and cold food. Restaurant staff were friendly and food was lovely, always on hand to refresh coffee and tea but weren't intrusive. Before our transport arrived we got to meet Angela the owner, we had a good chat and she was happy to ask about our party. All in all we will definitely be returning this place is a little gem

Most of the staff were lovely and couldn't do enough for you . Food in the evening that we had was poor . Breakfast was OK. The room we stayed in Room 7 was very tired and the bed cover was torn and stained. On stripping the bed when it was time to leave we discovered filthy pillows with two pillow cases to hide the stains and the duvet was worse . We were quickly offered a refund once the manager was aware. However this didn't make up for how upset we were at having slept in that bed .
