Without a doubt this hotel used to be number one for service & luxury in Chester. It’s expensive for a one night stay which includes a continental breakfast which has to be ordered by 2am & is brought to your room at a designated time. If you want a cooked breakfast it’s approximately £10 more per person, served in the restaurant.
Parking is £10 overnight in the car park attached to the hotel.
The staff were lovely but seemed stressed . At check-in we were handed a huge paper bag which included a pen, rules of stay & hand gel. The bag could have been a quarter of the size, it seemed wasteful. A deposit of £100 is taken on the card you have booked with for any incidentals.
Of course, life in the time of Covid-19 is different, but even as residents we had to book a time to have a drink in the bar & the checking, having to wear masks constantly & “keep to the right” signs made, what should have been an enjoyable night away, stressful & anxiety inducing. We have eaten out locally & despite the social distancing, felt welcomed & enjoyed the experiences, for a short while enjoying some “normality”. Here, we were being made constantly aware that there is a pandemic, as if we don’t know this anyway, & it made me feel “on edge”. Maybe once The Grosvenor has been opened a couple of weeks, the staff will be less anxious & this will make it a more enjoyable experience for guests paying a lot of money for the experience.

Dear starfish1234, Thank you for taking the time to review your recent stay at The Chester Grosvenor and for highlighting our COVID-19 secure practices. We reopened in late August and of course the challenges of implementing the procedures were expected but were overcome quickly by our enthusiastic and caring team. I do believe that we have now adapted to the new procedures whilst retaining the warm and friendly Chester Grosvenor welcome. Our inclusive delicious Continental breakfast hamper is currently served in the room. By completing the door card by 2am will give us plenty of time to include all of the sumptuous items requested. Full English breakfast is indeed charged at a supplement of £9.50 per person and is served in our La Brasserie restaurant. I am sure you will be pleased to hear that the welcome bag containing the items required for a safe and seamless check in is now much smaller and is being well received. Thank you for choosing The Chester Grosvenor, and I do hope we can welcome you again in the near future. Kind regards, Guest Relations

This hotel is a glimpse of what hotels were like in the past. It’s all very grand from the uniformed staff to the public rooms. The service as you would expect is very good and there are plenty of staff. The hotel rooms are ok but nothing special by modern standards. The Brasserie has a nice atmosphere and the food is good but I felt the menu was a little limited. Breakfast is served in the same room and unusually for hotels nowadays is entirely waiter service, continental breakfast is included in the room rate but the cooked element is £10 extra the quality is good though. Drinks in the bar are expensive although there is a big choice. The location is excellent being right in the city centre but parking is in the next door shopping centre multi storey car park which is expensive for long stays and there’s no discount for hotel guests. Overall a nice treat for a short stay but can be expensive.

Great service at this grande dame of a hotel. Our bags were whisked away by the doormen upon arrival only to already be in our room when we were personally shown to it by the receptionist. The continental breakfast had a very generous selection and as we chose to have it in our rooms there was no additional cost which was an added bonus. Great location in the heart of Chester and no trouble was too great for the staff. Hope to return soon.

A special celebration trip to The Chester Grosvenor was hugely disappointing. We were let down almost from the moment we arrived with poor communication by the reception staff, unexpectedly closed facilities at the hotel and slow service in the restuarant. This was compunded in the restaurant by uncleared tables (for up to an hour), food left scattered on the floor, lack of knowledge by the waiting staff and wrong food orders delivered to tables. The general standard of cleanliness around the hotel was not great and the rooms were bad in some areas - particularly the bathroom which had ingrained dirt and dust suggesting that it not been properly cleaned for a considerable period of time. All these points were detailed in an email to the hotel management, but no acknowledgement or response has been received. This is an advertised 'up-scale' hotel that is trading on its faded grandeur and does nothing to live up to the price or star billing. It is poor and appears to have been going downhill for some time. We will not be going back.

Stayed in the hotel for 2 nights, check in was easy and the shopping center car park on level 2 was perfect as its directly next to an entrance to the hotel.
Checked in no problem, added an extra 100.00 to my card as other hotels do, so not an issue. Was told at checking in that the booking i made for 2 nights including breakfast was only for a continental breakfast and i would have to pay an extra 10.00 each if we wanted a full breakfast, a little disappointed as that was not mentioned when i booked.
The biggest issue we had with the hotel was that after the 1st nights stay we went round chester for the day and came back around 5 ish to the room not touched by housekeeping, we still had the breakfast box in our room that we had at 8am.
We rang down to reception to let them know and we was told no housekeeping gets completed daily.
No clean towels
No bins emptied
No cups cleaned
No new toiletries
No new cards for us to order breakfast
I would expect the above to be done in a 50.00 travel lodge, let alone alone a 5 star hotel.
We contacted reception and they did send someone up to the room to clear the breakfast rubbish and we asked them for new towels.
Overall the hotel is in a perfect location, the staff are great and the hotel itself is very grand, just the cleaning of the rooms and the breakfast issue for me

Dear markphill70, Thank you for taking the time to review your recent stay at The Chester Grosvenor. I am delighted to hear that overall, your stay was enjoyable however I am sorry to learn of your disappointment that your room was not automatically serviced during your 2 nights with us. Our rooms are currently serviced on request and this is in line with the COVID safety guidelines. Our team are more than happy to attend the rooms to clear the breakfast hamper, supply fresh towels etc and of course clean as necessary. Our sumptuous full English breakfast is indeed charged at a supplement of £9.50 per person and is served in our La Brasserie restaurant, I apologise that you were not made aware of this prior to your arrival. Thank you for choosing The Chester Grosvenor, and I do hope we can welcome you again in the near future.

We stayed for two nights to celebrate my birthday and my partner Gary Halliday booked a superior room which we were not disappointed with. We asked for soya to be brought to the room only to find out they had already left two bottles of it in our mini fridge! We used the Brasserie for breakfast and cocktails and drinks where the service was efficient and professional. such a lovely ambience in beautiful surroundings. I was booked in for a massage and facial which was fantastic, a lovely chill out room to relax before and after the treatments and all the spa facilities you would expect. The Elemis products used were lovely which were also supplied in the rooms bathroom. All the rooms were individually decorated and our room 322 was large, bright and had a lovely large hall/dressing area and our bathroom was bright and large with a bath and shower.

Our experience at Simon Radley’s 8 course tasting menu was nothing short of fabulous. The food was beautifully presented and service was top notch! A special thank you to the Italian waitress (sorry we have forgotten your name) and Philip who were both very attentive and friendly.

All of the staff we came across were polite, professional and helpful so a big thank you to you to you all. Keep up the good work and we will be recommending The Chester Grosvenor to everyone!

My partner and I stayed here for one night, for our anniversary.

The parking is convenient, although charged at £10 per day extra. As soon as we entered the hotel we was greeted by a polite gentleman and made to feel very welcome. Our bags was taken off us to be taken to our room.

Arriving in the reception we was pleasantly greeted by the reception who took payment for our stay and personally shown us to our room.

We stayed in the deluxe room; room 132. It was unfortunately situated next to the housekeeping department, which was very noisy in the morning.

The bed was large and comfortable however the facilities were lacking and in need of refurbishment, such as lack of plugs near the tea/ coffee tray, only one plug working on many twin sockets, shower head was tricking out and the iron was due an upgrade.

Moving onto breakfast which was an extra £19 on top of the £190 we paid for our room to upgrade to the cooked breakfast. We arrived at the restaurant 10am to find many dirty tables which hadn’t been cleared. We was showed to a table and given menus. One waiter asked for the drink order while another for the food order. The hot drinks, which was a simple tea and black coffee took 15 minutes to arrive. When they did arrive my cup was filthy, I asked for it to be replaced which they accepted but failed to return a clean cup.

Other tables which had arrived after us had been served their toast and full English, while we was still waiting on fresh juice and toast, only one juice arrived which added to the frustration.

After 40 minutes the cooked breakfast arrived with the toast shortly after, overall this was an abysmal breakfast. I wouldn’t expect this in a £30 a night room never mind a 5 star hotel.

Overall we enjoyed our stay but wouldn’t recommend or return as we feel standards didn’t reflect the price or statue of the hotel. We understand hospitality is going through a rough patch but the service must reflect the price paid. We don’t feel this was due to staff shortage, more organisation. Having one waiter to take the drink/food and another to fetch would simply remove confusion and instil accountability.

Ben

We had booked a two night stay on the summer deal, excellent value for money……..on checking in we were informed that we had been given a complimentary room upgrade……..a lovely touch!! We were shown to our room by the young man who checked us in, something I heard other guests being offered and we thought it was a lovely idea.

Our upgraded room was the Mayfair Suite which had its own lounge, a bedroom with a four poster bed (not sure how a short person would get in and out of the bed as it was quite high off the ground) a separate toilet and a bathroom with a bath, walk in shower and his and hers basin and large, heavy, fluffy white bath towels with Elemis products.

The staff make this hotel memorable, any issues we had were dealt with immediately and in a very positive and professional manner. Every member of staff we had contact with were extremely friendly, helpful and professional. It was great to speak with Niki Deponeo, Guest Relations Manager when we were checking out and share our feedback to her personally before we left.

We loved the location of the hotel, you are within easy walking distance of so many interesting places……..the cathedral, the river and of course the shops!! Parking wasn’t an issue as we knew exactly where the Grosvenor shopping centre car park is, there is a pull in where you can drop off your luggage before finding a parking space and when we departed a very helpful porter carried our luggage to our car which my husband had driven in to the hotel pull in……the only thing guests need to remember is to pay for parking at the machines found on level 1 and 2 as the car park uses number plate recognition.

When we next visit Chester we will certainly look at booking The Chester Grosvenor again, thank you for a lovely stay.

Dear LindaWyn, Thank you ever so much for a truly outstanding review - you are very kind indeed. I must agree indeed that our central location makes it ideal for enjoying all that Chester has to offer, including the racecourse and shopping, which is all just a short walk away. We're absolutely thrilled that you both had such a fabulous time with us, and I do so hope that it won't be too long before we can welcome you both again. Thank you very much indeed. We stayed in room 140, for 2 nights the second week in September.
It is a lovely hotel, but is looking a bit tired and could do with a good clean. To be honest we were booked into the New Blossom next door but it was closed so we moved here. The room we use there is just as nice but £80 a night cheaper.
Dinner was amazing the rib eye was out of this world it just melted in your mouth. My husband had the Bass and Octopus again out of this world, your chefs are to be congratulated on an amazing meal.
Our room was lovely but on closer inspection was not very clean and after paying £200 a night you expect it to be at least that. We had sheets the did not fit the bed, a ripped settee, and dust.
I expected more than 2 cups of coffee each without having to ask for more, I expected shower caps and clean bath handles,
The fridge also needed a good clean, the milk was open and well off, so had to be changed.
But you are not just paying for a room, you are paying to be waited on hand and foot, to have door opened by the doorman in his frock coat and top hat. To be served at dinner (which was excellent) by very well dressed and turned out staff.
You are paying for the ambience of the place, and at the moment Covid has dropped that down a peg.
But in our book you did a sterling job and we had a lovely time.

Dear badlady48, Thank you for taking the time to review your recent stay with us at The Chester Grosvenor. I am so sorry to learn that your room was not presented to our usual high standards. I have raised the points you have so kindly advised me of with my colleagues in our housekeeping team, it is so important to us to ensure the consistency of our standards in all areas of our operation. Our in-room tea and coffee making facilities include 4 individually wrapped, delicious Grosvenor house blend coffee, 2 of which are decaffeinated, our room service team, are always delighted to offer more sachets on request. We also offer a selection of vanity items on request including shower caps. Thank you for sharing the detail of your dinner in La Brasserie restaurant, I know that the kitchen and service team will be so pleased that their hard work and meticulous preparing has been commended. Finally, thank you again for reviewing your full stay, the COVID-19 secure practices have changed procedures slightly but every guest is assured of the warm and friendly Grosvenor welcome. Kind regards Guest Relations

I feel I need to write and stick up for the hotel as the recent poor reviews are really surprising.
We returned home yesterday after a two night break and could not fault a thing.
From the moment the concierge met us upon entering the hotel to leaving after our luxurious spa treatments the staff were absolutely fantastic.
The bedroom was perhaps a little tired if you are going to be super critical but it had a massive comfortable bed, very powerful hot shower (yes over the bath but not the end of the world), beautiful Elemis toiletries, bathrobes and slippers, tea coffee making facilities with homemade short bread. Lovely view of the shops outside.
Rooms were not automatically serviced due to Covid restrictions but if you asked you could have it cleaned. We didn’t bother.
Breakfast on day 1 was served in our room, beautiful full English (included in the room rate) and also continental as well.
Day 2 we are in the restaurant for breakfast which was equally as nice and great service.
We had a beautiful meal in the restaurant on our first night, again service was top class.
Overall if you have booked a stay at the hotel then please don’t be put off by the recent negative reviews.
