The Mercure Chester Abbots Well Hotel garners appreciation for its prime location, offering easy access to Chester attractions and its commendable cleanliness. While the service is often highlighted as friendly, guests have called out the rooms for appearing outdated and the value proposition is questioned, with concerns about the cost of meals and parking.
The hotel's amenities, including the swimming pool and breakfast, are generally well-received, yet some reviewers warn of maintenance needs. Despite this, the overall atmosphere is perceived as welcoming by many travelers.

The staff at this hotel are fantastic we found all the team to be helpful and polite especially the breakfast team.
Swimming pool was a hit for our water baby who spent hours in the pool!! Very impressed that it was actually deeper than most hotel swimming pools.
Breakfast was perfect loads of choice.
Room wise did us for one night however we could hear people next door and the room was extremely warm. Also needs some updating.
Overall we were impressed for a last minute family weekend away.
There is a park and ride 5min walk away which is only £2.50 per adult for the day into the city.

I do not like giving average reviews, so let’s start with the positives. The staff were very helpful, friendly and welcoming. The is plenty of free parking, but remember to check your registration in at reception. The hotel is located a short shuttle bus or taxi ride away from the centre.
We were staying during the Chester Race meeting and therefore the hotel was very full. We need to get an extra room . As an accor member my colleague asked for an extra room. We were told helpfully there was one left at £189 for the night. We are both Accor members and I appreciate the rates were probably higher normal. It was interesting that the room my colleague had booked for me right then, was the only room that was ready! To me this suggests that it maybe had been blocked off for some reason. I was to find out! It was a warm day, but the small room was very hot and I noticed a fan, as there was no air conditioning. The bed was big and comfortable, but the room itself was quite tired and passé. The issue in the room came later when I discovered no water went into the cistern (very old ) on flushing. This meant I had to top up the water with the small glass provided in the bathroom. The next shock came when I went to shower. A short spurt of water then nothing! I mentioned this to the reception desk, who to be fair were apologetic and said it would be dealt with.
I then went to breakfast only to find that the £189 paid did not include breakfast, which is an additional £17.95 . I mentioned again the problem with the room and very decently the management offered me complimentary breakfast. This was very much appreciated. The breakfast itself is buffet style, but well stocked and with full english available. Very acceptable. I gladly thank the staff for their efforts, but would urge mercure to look at the state of the whole property .

Good location for us wanting to go to Chester Zoo. 10 mins down the road.
Staff were extremely kind, personable, and helpful. Also very hard working.
We were given a room which was up a lot of stairs and we found there was no lift. I needed a lift because I struggle with stairs. Reception said they could change our family room to a ground floor room but would be a double and a septerate twin room at no extra cost, this was really kind of them and really appreciated it.
The rooms are basic, TV didn’t work and in the morning we found we didn’t have any towels only a bath Matt and hand towel. It was too late to ask for some as we needed to leave for our day at the zoo.
We ate in the restaurant and probably wouldn’t do that again as it was quite pricey for an adult meal. Kids meals were good price though and included a main, dessert and a drink for £8. Restaurant staff were lovely but ran ragged. They were working the busy restaurant and the bar at the same time. The restaurant manager was really helpful and a young waitress engaged with the kids lovely.
Breakfast was included in our stay but would have cost £17.95 per person and although it was a very varied breakfast it wasn’t the best. Fresh juice and coffee machines available.
Other hotel guest were really loud in breakfast - not staffs fault but wasn’t pleasant for others
Would only stay again for location proposes as close to what we were attend Chester for. Would order takeaway to be delivered and would eat out for breakfast as well

We did not enjoy our 4 night stay here, with our disappointment starting on arrival. As Gold Accor members, we chose this hotel to gain the points and should have been awarded a room upgrade, but this was not given, due to "unavailability". The rules do not state "if available', but should be awarded on booking. Despite our protestations and despite our booking being made in early March this year, we were not granted an upgrade. This was a hugely disappointing start. We advised reception that if an upgrade was not going to be awarded, then they should NOT have taken our booking in March.
Our room was also disappointing, being small and not feeling like a "Privilege" room. I guess a fridge and robes did that, but the overall ambience was disappointing with no easy chairs available. We also suffered from undue noise into the early hours on two nights from an adjoining room, due to a connecting door between the two.
Location of the hotel was very good, with plenty of parking and a short 3-4 minutes walk to the Park & Ride into Chester, with buses every 10 minutes. With the journey into Chester just 10 minutes, this was very handy.
Breakfast we found very disappointing. The carpet in the breakfast room around the servery was very badly stained and deserving of a good clean. Breakfast choice was an unstartling selection, with very poor fried eggs. Of the two coffee machines available, one was not serving coffee and the other dispensed a very poor tasting latte. Despite reporting this to staff at the time, this situation remained the same throughout our 4 night stay.
It was also abundantly clear that staffing at breakfast was woefully inadequate, and this showed with no-one to ask for poached eggs or an omelette, tables were not being cleared in reasonable time and guests were left struggling to find a clean table.
During our stay, we had to renew/rescan our door card keys 5 times! As if this was not bad enough, whenever we went to reception, there was never anyone there and no bell or buzzer to call anyone. So, we either had to wait for someone to pitch up or call out for someone from the back office. This is not very convenient for the customer and very frustrating!
Clearly, the door key system is inefficient and needs fixing and a simple buzzer on the reception desk to summon assistance would help.
Overall, we did not consider our stay a pleasant one, and did not feel that standards were high enough or that we felt we were being looked after. We therefore did not consider it good value for money. So much so, that we would advise those looking for a hotel in the area to go elsewhere.
Rated as No. 28 out of 49 pretty much says it all and we were so disappointed we will not be staying at a Mercure again in the future.

Hi Glendair, Thank you for taking time to comprehensively review your stay with us in Chester. I am very sorry indeed that your experience was disappointing. Having spoken with the team I understand that an upgrade was not available, bedroom upgrades are done when they are available, as you booked a privilege room the upgrade is to a superior room of which we have two, both were booked during your stay and you are right that these are subject to availability. I am sorry that this was disappointing and understand from the team that you were offered additional complimentary drinks as an alternative. Thank you for your feedback regarding the breakfast room carpet. We regularly have this professionally cleaned but recognise that around the buffet area it is not the best floor covering for that environment as such it is being replaced with a more suitable alternative in the coming few weeks - thank you for highlighting this. We typically receive very positive comments regarding breakfast so I am sorry that this was not your experience. We have recently upgraded our coffee machines to offer a bean to cup experience. Unfortunately we have had some teething issues which led to one temporarily being out of service, I am sorry that this clearly affected your experience, I can happily share that it has been replaced this morning. Thank you for your further feedback regarding the door system. Door cards can become wiped when stored close to mobile phones, that said we will further investigate your feedback to ensure no malfunction with the door system. I do hope that we are able to welcome you back in the future to demonstrate the ongoing improvements. Regards, Richard & all the team

Gift from family for Valentines arrived receptionist was nice. Got to room head hairs left on towels and pubes on pillows in bed. I spoke with receptionist who was very helpful and I was informed housekeeping have finished for the day and she would come to the room and have a look. I was also informed no other rooms available I was given complimentary drinks vouchers then I was then told I could move to another room. I moved all my stuff into the room only to find more pubes in the bed and stains all over the sheets. I spoke with a duty manager who didn’t seem bothered and offered a full refund. This took just u dear two weeks to receive as it was booked via booking.com. I emailed the hotel and it took them to respond after I had chased them twice on the phone. Worst hotel I have ever stayed in.

Smoking area right outside the main entrance is an awful first impression the foul smell wafts into reception, unfortunately the room we were allocated didn't smell any better ,rather disgusting stale smell hit us as soon as we opened the door ,room hadn't been cleaned well at all either! There was a sock along with years of dirt behind the radiator (241 if your interested) carpet very dirty. To be fair Susan at reception gave us another room without any fuss, which was better but for what we payed we expected a lot more especially when it comes to cleanliness and having stayed here many times it's clear standards have slipped and some rooms needs a deep clean ,bathroom grout, carpet shampoo, behind radiators etc.. the shower barely trickled out hot water ! Pool area is dirty the changing rooms are absolutely filthy, with no lockers to keep your belongings First night we were woken by kids running up & down the corridor at 1:30am only stopping when I got up to shout at them , god knows where the parents were ? Next morning again Susan at reception offered to move us due to the rowdy family being allowed to stay another night ! As an apology we were also given the option of a free breakfast , thankfully it was free as £17 for half cooked sausages cold eggs ,hash browns and beans is a joke Standards have really slipped at this mercure for over £100 a night for a stay it's really not worth it , we only stayed the 2nd night due to it being bank holiday and hotels elsewhere where fully booked . Will not return here .

We stayed at the Abbots Well for a friend's birthday celebration and whst a lovely time we all had. On check in we were greeted so professionally by the reception team. Our rooms were tastefully decorated and spacious with all the amenities needed including complimentary cold drinks and a coffee machine 😊 We had a choice of dining in the Bar or Restaurant which had a good variety of food options on both Menus. We ate in the Restaurant and the dishes we had were delicious and the waiting on staff were extremely helpful and very knowledgeable on Allergens as a friend in our party had a severe allergy and their was plenty of options to choose from. Very reasonably priced to. Thsnk you to all the team at the Abbots Well for such a lovely weekend and we will surly be returning soon 😀

We often stay at Mercure hotels as they offer very reasonable pricing. This hotel offers plentiful parking with easy access to Chester via the park and ride a quick walk away. The room was fine and did have the benefit of air con (not all the rooms have this) the only downside to the room was a shower that was practically useless and if you like a nice soak in the tub the pump toiletries are 3ft or so above your head so not very practical. The breakfast was very good with plenty of choice although odd orange juice more like squash. We always choose to eat in Mercure restaurants although this time we were a little disappointed. The food was well cooked but the ingredients did seem to be a little lacking.one of our party had the pie choice which did appear to be similar to a Pukka pie rather than one prepared in house which you would expect for the price point. I had Scampi but they were very small pieces more like supermarket economy than restaurant standard. The staff are to be commended they are helpful and nothing is too much trouble and they do their very best to make your stay pleasant

The overall feeling of the hotel is tired. There is not enough staff throughout the hotel, some people were waiting 10mins for reception, the kitchen staff are undermanned as the breakfast was very slow to replenish the hot plates. I booked a wheelchair assessable room (118), the room is very suitable for a wheelchair, plenty of room around the bed, etc. however, the bathroom which is advertised as wheelchair accessible is anything but. There is a door type system around the shower area to contain the water, there is also shower seat fitted which precludes use of a wheelchair in the shower area. the bathroom is very small and not accessible by wheelchair. There is only one disabled room in a hotel with around 300 rooms! I would suggest the hotel updates the disabled room to a 'wet room' this would certainly make a difference to disabled people. I found the hotel staff (when they were available) to be friendly and helpful. I found the meals to be of a standard that you would find in a '2 for1' pub, not a large chain hotel. On a positive note, the parking is good, and the hotel is very close to Chester.

I have used the conference facilities several times. The rooms are bright and well furnished, just having been renovated. All the staff are very friendly, accommodating and efficient. Everything is always prepared well and any queries are addressed immediately. The maintenance man is always ready to assist with a cheerful and informed demeanour. The parking area is large and enables my attendees easy access. There is free fast Wi-Fi and projection equipment included. Seating can be configured to any requirements accommodating one large group or smaller break away sessions. The conference rooms are in a quiet environment without distractions where we can focus without being distracted by the noise of the general hotel. Each room is air-conditioned and there is a separate break area where refreshments are provided on demand.

They didn’t when we had our party there but the hotel ran power outside so I’d imagine heating could be arranged if it turns chilly, but I can confirm they were pretty cosy and draught-free
