A few years ago when working in the Chester area the Mill became home for around 6 months and I got used to the warm friendly welcome, great atmosphere, gym/pool facilities and of course its fantastic central location to Chester City Centre, the wall and night life, it became easily my go to hotel in Chester, infant the only time I didn't stay was when they were full!

I was looking for somewhere for a weekend away and the Mill came to mind so booked in recognising that it may look and feel a little different this time around with social distancing etc.. and its been a mixed bag.

I booked my partner and I (2 people) into a standard double room in the mill building and I'm pleased to see the room we were in had been modernised, the floors were not creaking anymore, and it was clean, well decorated and of good size. The bed was comfortable, the towels fresh and it could have been even better if there were 2 chairs in room, not 1 and there was no AC sit outside the window! Though we were pleased it didn't run all night!

The issues start at breakfast! the old self service buffet has been replaced by a process of completing a menu card, handing this to the front of house team who then serve you. We booked breakfast for 10am Sunday, and when we arrived we were greeted by a significantly long queue, and with people moving round reception, in/out of the lift, stairs, out of the restaurant etc.. social distancing was impossible defeating all the measure taken with makings on the floor etc.. Breakfast then took an HOUR with a significant wait for cooked breakfast which as very poor, cold and basically thrown at us without any question if we would like sauces! the additional tea requested while we were waiting never arrived and in the end we gave up. It seamed staff more content to move trays of clean glasses around rather than deal with customers who were very clearly not happy. Customer service at this point didn't exist, there seamed to be no front of house leadership of the situation, and this is not the quality I would expect from the mill or its team.

I expect there will be teething troubles to get an operation like this re-started, and this was the first Sunday morning breakfast service, but to not put customers first is unforgivable, and not even offer an apology for the wait was unforgivable too, hence my rating.

I will be coming back as it was not all bad, just the breakfast that leaves a sour taste in the mouth.

We recently stayed for a girls long weekend. Very large clean room (slight noise on the Sat night as there was a 60th birthday party, however, nothing too disturbing)
On the first night we ate in the Canaletto Restaurant in the hotel and the food was very good and great value for money. The waiting on staff were wonderful especially our drinks waiter who was brilliant and so much fun. Swimming pool, sauna and jacuzzi an added bonus after hours of shopping too. Excellent location for shops/restaurants/bars etc. Would definitely recommend this hotel.

Stayed here for 2 nights in January to celebrate my wife’s 40th. We booked a canal view room with a jacuzzi bath for £155 per night.
The location of the hotel is ideal, with it being only a 5 minute walk into the city centre. There was ample parking which was free as we booked directly with the hotel.
The room was slightly dated for what we paid for but perfectly adequate. It included a fridge which was handy. There were the usual toiletries included but for some odd reason they don’t include a small bar of soap (we brought our own).
On the first night we ate in the main restaurant and the meal was excellent and at £25 for 3 courses plus coffee offered great value (the main course included steak and my wife had a duck dish). Breakfast was also very good with the food piping hot and good quality.
We really liked the bar that was attached to the hotel as it had a good ambience and offered a great selection of beers (6 hand pulled beers) and cocktails. The bar prices were also reasonable at around £3.50 ish a pint.
We enjoyed using the spa facilities (pool, jacuzzi, sauna) but unfortunately my wife didn’t get a treatment as they were fully booked when we enquired (probs best to book well in advance).
On the Saturday morning we drove to Cheshire Oaks and it was around a 10 minute drive from the hotel. On the Saturday afternoon I drove from the hotel to Chester FC and that took around 15 minutes, although I wish I hadn’t as my team lost 3-0.
Overall this was a really enjoyable stay. Perhaps as a nice gesture the hotel could have left a birthday card or drinks voucher in the room as I notified them in advance that it was my wife’s 40th but this wasn’t acknowledged. I’d definitely return to this hotel in the future and would recommend to others.

Stayed here for 2 nights and paid over £100 a night for the room. Check in was fantastic, very helpful although minimum slots for swim and breakfast, I know this is unavoidable due to the current climate so perhaps advance booking would help?
The room was very dated and the canal view was minimum, as we were in a top floor room, so if you’re over 6ft you might get a peek at the canal before if you press your head up against the window but that’s about it
Facilities in the room were OK, room was constantly boiling so needed to intermittently turn the air con off and on and was disappointed there was no mini fridge (stayed in a holiday inn for £40 a few weeks ago and there was one in there :/)
Location is great and probably a highlight and parking is available at £7.50 a day
Came home one evening after a meal out and there was a very intoxicated female lounging around the lobby looking as though she was about to spew and pass out, although this was right by the front desk this seemed to not be noticed and certainly put a downer on the entrance back as we had to wait uncomfortably for the lift by her for 15 mins due to social distancing and kick out time of the hotel bar
Breakfast was probably the biggest grumble, we only had breakfast on the first day and ate out on the next day. Very basic, one overdone egg, one streaky piece of bacon, and one very sad sausage. The staff seemed a bit chaotic and we were brought other people’s breakfast 3 times due to their confusion in table numbers
So overall would stay here again if the price was lower but when you pay over £100 a night we did expect a little bit more

We decided to stay at the Mill hotel because of its location and spa. We stayed for 4 nights, and ate at the hotel every night in order to minimise social contact outside the hotel. The food each night was very good, although the menu was limited. The location is great, just a few minutes walk from the city centre and bus station, where we caught the bus to Chester zoo, just a 20 minute journey. The staff at the hotel were great, very friendly and efficient, we had a problem with our TV and it was sorted very quickly. The processes they have in place for Covid were extremely good and we felt very safe during our stay; there were plenty of hand sanitising stations throughout the hotel, even in the lift! The only reason we didn't give it 5 stars is due to the carpet in the bedroom which was rucked up in places and could do with refitting, and the balcony, where the paving stones could have done with a good scrub. However, we would definitely stay again.

We enjoyed our stay here. The location is a 15 minute walk from the town centre, the room was spotless and had everything we needed in it.

Breakfast was very good with plenty of food and the bar was really good to finish off in after a night in town.

Free parking is the top hat so would definitely stay here again.

This was our first visit to Chester and we decided to come to the Mill hotel but we wouldn’t return to this hotel.

We arrived around 1:15 and we decided to go in as sometimes hotels let you check in early, they gave us some paperwork and asked us to return at 2. We came back about 2:15 and we went straight to our room, despite check in being at 2 our room wasn’t ready. We were hot and bothered and just wanted to sit down, they said we could leave our bags in the room but would have to return in 15 mins at 2:30.

We walked into the room and it was awful, it was nothing the pictures we had seen. The room looked like it hadn’t been decorated or refurbed since the 80’s. There were stains on the carpet and the carpet was loose, lamps covered in dust and we were just generally unimpressed.

I am never ever usually one to complain or ask for an upgrade, but in this case we did. To be fair to the hotel, they were very good and gave us an upgrade for free with no fuss. The upgraded room was better and much cleaner but still not the best and not worth the money that we paid. Again, it was tired and in need of refurbishment.

The rooms were very very hot, as there was no air conditioning but a fan was provided.

Masks had to be worn around the public areas of the hotel, which we did, but not many of the other guests did. One time we came downstairs and forgot to put them on, so we were asked to put them on but this didn’t seem to happen with other guests.

Breakfast was ok, we only had it because it was included in the price but was very basic and nothing special.

There was a lack of clarity on car parking (we booked through booking.com) if you book through booking.com it’s £7.50 per night but if you book directly with the hotel the parking is included.

A major criticism, particularly during these times, was that there was no soap in the room! We had our own anti-bac but we had to use shower gel to wash our hands.

The positives about the hotel, would be that it was in a great location. It was about a 5 min walk into the centre so no need to take the car and lots of great bars and directions all round the hotel.

The staff were also very friendly and helpful. However, we wouldn’t return to the hotel as it didn’t meet our expectations, it is in need of renovations.

I will start with the positive. Andrew on reception was extremely pleasant and very professional. The staff in the leisure facility were very pleasant and helpful. Now the negatives and there are a few. Our room on the fifth floor was so hot in the night it was impossible to sleep we left the hotel tired and certainly not refreshed. I mentioned this to reception and was told it was because the walls are so thick. The shower was a trickle as the tap was fixed at one and a half turns so very little pressure. The so called balcony was dangerous the tiles were loose and there were dead wasps and cigarette ends that were there for the duration of our stay (4 nights). So we didn’t sit out as we expected to. We were asked to book a time for breakfast which I refused to do as I was on holiday and said I wanted to come down for breakfast when I was ready to do so. This unfortunately did not sit well with a member of staff who seated and greeted and he made us feel like we were naughty children. Our room was left on one day not cleaned and no fresh towels. Andrew from reception had to get housekeeping to sort it out for us. It should not have happened and we should not have had to wait till 4pm to go back into our room.

We consider we paid a lot of money for the room and we could have found a considerably better hotel. I think someone from the Bespoke hotel group should take the time to look at this hotel from a guest’s view and they will be shocked. We were celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary and expected a lot better.

We are sorry to read how disappointed you are with your recent visit, and would like to assure you that your comments have been forwarded on to our management team within the Hotel for them to view. Since we re-opened in July 2020, we introduced seating times for breakfast, which we have found to be very successful. We are still operating covid restrictions, for the safety of our customers and team members. This is also the case for our housekeeping teams. We stopped here for a 2 night stay for a quick break from the hectic retail life and stopped in a canal View deluxe room. On walking into the room it was smaller than it looked on the site but not bad. Bathroom was a good size and had a good powerful shower but it had a problem with the tap in the sink as the cold water came out luke warm at best which was not good if you are thirsty drinking warm water!.
we didn't sleep well unfortunately as the mattress was rock hard and the pillows were very thin like about 2cm!.
Food was OK in the restaurants but nothing special.
What I found worst was that upon doing the usual scout round the room before we left i found a pair of womens knickers sticking out from down the side of the bed that weren't my partners! So the room obviously hadn't been cleaned properly which is worrying given the current covid situation.
All in all we had a better experience at a premier inn the next night of our tour at a quarter of the price of the Mill, with much comfier beds and nicer fresher food in the restaurants, and also the car parking was free and plentiful unlike the tight and expensive carpark at the mill hotel.
So to sum up the mill is close to town and the staff are great but the rooms and food are a let down so apologies Mill hotel but we won't be back.

I booked a canalside deluxe room with private balcony for 2 nights at a cost of £430. We were staying here for my wifes 50th birthday and I thought i'd picked a great room. The room looked nothing like the hotel photos where the rooms looked very modern and bright, it was in need of updating, this was true for most of the hotel. The balcony was a great size but the flagstones that made up the floor were all loose when you stepped on them. There were weeds growing up along the balcony wall and the table outside was in a poor state of repair (see photos). There wasa kettle and brewing supplies in the room but the cups were cardboard, apparently because of Covid. On a plus note, there was plenty of storage and a powerful jacuzzi bath in the room.

There are lots of Covid precautions in place which was reassuring. One of the stranger precautions is that the hotel are not making cocktails because of Covid. You could order an Aperol and mixer but not a cocktail. Again, there were positives in the bar area, the service was great and all the staff were really friendly, the drinks were reasonably priced for a hotel.

We ate breakfast at the hotel and it was lovely, lots to choose from and tasty with great service. We never used the spa facilities. If you book with the hotel parking us free, if you book 3rd party, you are charged a daily rate and I heard a few irate people arguing over this at reception.

Overall we enjoyed our stay at this hotel but feel like we overpaid for the size and quality of the room. They have had occasions during the 18 months of lockdown to spruce up the rooms and balconies and I feel they have missed an opportunity to use that time productively.
