Having read a few negative reviews I was nervous about our overnight stay particularly in terms of how the hotel was handling Covid hygiene.
Have to say I felt reassured and relaxed during our (too short) stay.
We stayed on their 'Sunday Sleepover' which was excellent value.

I arrived armed with Disinfectant Wipes to wipe light switches/ tv remote/ door handles etc etc. and I did use them for my own peace of mind but I have to say our room was extremely clean and the bathroom immaculate. We were in the 'entry level' room type but found it more than adequate with everything we needed.

I had read that people had previously had trouble with the self-check-in and with finding staff. We had no such problem at all. On arrival a very helpful young member of staff appeared and efficiently checked us in and personally showed us where everything was including accompanying us to our room.

I didn't think I would use the pool as I felt it was a risk I shouldn't take in these Covid times, but as there was only three people in the water I decided to book a swim. The pool is a good size for a small hotel and the water temperature was lovely (and believe me I am an absolute wuss in cold water!!)

Our restaurant experience was excellent. Tables were well spaced and the food was placed on side tables adjacent to the dining table so the serving staff always kept their 2m distance from guests. The food was a delight and the chef deserves a special mention. The flavours of every item on the plate were delicious, clearly cooked with skill and knowledge of flavours. The servers were friendly, courteous and attentive. We felt they had either been trained to a high standard or they were just naturally gifted in the hospitality industry. Either way our experience of the staff was different to other reviewers. We found no fault with any member of staff including the cleaning team. They are a credit to the hotel in our opinion.

These are such challenging times but we felt this hotel rose to the challenges and provided an extremely good guest experience.

Some reviews have said it is overpriced and I think there could possibly be alternatives comparable to the rack rate but the Sunday Sleepover was exceptional value and we would absolutely love to return. Loved our stay, thank you to all the staff!

After reading the reviews of Merchants Manor we decided to spend our Anniversary weekend with them. We were not disappointed, in fact quite impressed. Check in was relaxed with a glass of bubbles and a slice of Brownie. The Ladies in the foyer were friendly, approachable and genuine, we found this with all the staff members we encountered. We left our car in the large car park and walked into town for a wander. Returning to our beautiful room, the bathroom was massive with a stand alone bath and Temple Spa products. There was an iron in the room, with a call down to reception the ironing board was delivered for our use for the duration of our stay. The bed was super comfortable with quality bedding. The pool was lovely to make use of, as was the steam room and jacuzzi.
Dinner was delicious, every dish ordered was well presented and came with an explanation on where the ingredients came from and how they were cooked. On the Saturday the restaurant had a sommelier. His recommendations and guidance were spot on. He took us out of our comfort zone and we were not disappointed. Sunday evening we had the roast, the beef was perfectly cooked and uniquely presented. Breakfast was of a good standard. Preferring fresh milk with the in room tea tray, with a call to reception this was provided. Everything was local, with their own honey as they have their own hives.
This Hotel makes a huge effort to provide an excellent service all round, whilst helping the environment. Ie paperless reception and no plastic bin liners in the room waste bins, to mention a few of what we noticed.
I had two treatments in the Spa, which were professional and relaxing, just what I asked for. Over all our experience exceeded our expectations, we can’t wait to return.

Whilst everyone has different values and experiences, I find it hard to fathom some of the negative comments written about Merchants Manor.

We had a brilliant time and will definitely be back.

There was a potential blip, in that we were asked to change rooms half way through our stay, but management dealt with this sensitively, explaining the rationale and by going the extra mile to address the inconvenience that had been caused. Exactly what good managers do.

Yes, staff were absent during the day from the public’s view but they miraculously seemed to appear every time we needed them.

The COVID policies are good and proportionate - masks are required in public areas, there is loads of hand sanitiser and a one way system has been introduced. However, it is hardly necessary as during our week stay we only met other guests in the hotel corridors on two occasions. But it is better to be safe than sorry.

Judging by the comments, the breakfast has been transformed (although I suspect not) as the full english breakfast offered was the best I’ve ever had in a hotel. In addition, the way the breakfast was packaged up to address the COVID risks could not be faulted.

Another couple commented on the 8 course Cornish taster menu, saying it was excellent and I concur with their views. The restaurant is a big feature for this hotel.

We did have some gripes about the pool and state of the changing rooms.

Finally, the rooms are comfortable and the furnishings were good. However, they are not standardised like some of the big chains.

At the end of the day, it is personal choice. It is expensive but then it offers a great experience!

We were so happy to be able to book this hotel at such short notice, but it didn’t quite live up to expectations after a few day’s stay. 3 nights max would have been enough as the menus and breakfast choices were so limited and there were no reasonable alternatives either. In the absence of any room cleaning, it didn’t feel right either.
The hotel itself is quite charming, with a few lovely lounge areas and the bedrooms comfortable, but the. bathroom was small and the bath smaller still. . Due to Covid, our room wasn’t cleaned and the drawers and floor were not clean when we arrived. There was no facility to clean our own bathrooms and we had to request clean towels and also after 4 days for our room to be freshened you. The bedrooms were really hot, but a fan was provided. We came away to chill as Key workers, but didn’t anticipate we would be making our own bed and keeping the area clean as we could without any cleaning materials. It seemed the regime was more suited to the hotel than the guests, under the cover of ‘covid’. We wanted boiled eggs for breakfast for example but told we could only have poached, scrambled or fried ? No toast or bread rolls but served croissants Only ? Only apple juice and granola as the choices ? We failed to see how Covid had impacted the menu choices so much, seemed to suit the hotelier more !
The evening meal was tasty but the portions were really small - the alternative Veggie option to Sunday lunch turned up as 2 pieces of grilled courgette ! Not what we paid for.
The pool, sauna and gym were naturally closed and meant we were quite restricted on the site.
The saving grace of this hotel is the staff - they were lovely and pleasant, but we left a day early as we were ‘done’ with the hotel, but there was no refund offered and despite feeding the above back to the owner in a very pleasant and constructive way, we were still charged for the evening meal and the extra night. We thought it wouldn’t have gone a miss to have had some sort of refund, but this didn’t happen.

A reasonably nice hotel with good potential but let down by the way it’s being run and some maintenance issues.

Booking was an ordeal. The lady I was dealing with kept giving me wrong information and saying I needed to pay for meals that I had already paid for, no matter how much evidence I provided. Arguing with the hotel is not a pleasant start to a holiday.

During dinner or in the bar of an evening, the lights seem to get dimmer, then flicker off and on before brightening up again… then repeat, constantly.

Our room was largely pleasant but had stains on the carpet and the dressing gown hook in the bathroom fell out when we first used it. The room was also close to a tennis court so could be quite loud, particularly if the window was open.

Breakfast was mostly good but again, a few small issues. They strangely don’t do orange juice even though every morning (of 3) we heard at least one other table ask for it. The waitress even acknowledged that “everyone asks for it but we don’t do it”. Why not give the people what they want? The mixed pastries was actually one pastry of their choice. Some mornings they only had one type. They also don’t sell bottled water (including sparkling) at any time of day, only providing their own filtered water. At breakfast you can order tea and coffee or pay extra for specialty coffees like cappuccino for example. When guests ordered these, the staff we’re going into the hallway and making the drinks from the complimentary machine, even though they have a proper barista coffee machine behind the bar. Also not sure if guests were still paying for these drinks when they’re from the complimentary machine.

The gym equipment is fine. However, I wanted to use the mat for stretching and core work but it was disgusting. Full of dirt and hairs. I don’t think it’s ever cleaned. Not good when we’re living through covid so cleanliness should be priority.

Staff were all very nice and very pleasant. Unfortunately there were a number of seasonal staff who didn’t know the details on how the hotel was operated. It wasn’t their fault and they were all lovely, but I don’t think they should be left to get on with it on their first day. Two days running we had bar staff that couldn’t find drinks, straws or use the till because it was their first day and they’d been left to run the bar alone, which did lead to a couple of errors. They were trying hard and very helpful but should have had support.

Good help with check in
Though can easily be done on the computer in the hall. One worked
One did not
Better rooms on top floor were spacious
Beds were comfortable and big
Balcony had great views all the way to Falmouth castle. Sunrises were wonderful
Rooms were individually decorated to have a country house hotel feel
All staff were extraordinary.
Most were University students, well spoken, extremely helpful and polite.
The downstairs lounge and bar area felt like one could sit and have drinks and lounge around.
Very reasonably priced bottles of wine
We didnt eat dinner here though we did hear it was good
We had a bar snack one lunchtime and it was good
BOBBY the manager was extraordinary
We saw him whizzing around , doing anything and everything. Always polite and helpful.
I also think the abilty to just press a button in the entrance hall for a taxi to arrive a brilliant idea!!! Never had a problem getting a taxi . We could have walked to the beach if I had felt well enough to walk uphill for 20 mins.
Great hotel
Great breakfast
Great service
My daughter had a massage in the SPA with Amy? Which she said was Bliss!
The sauna was good
Water in swimming pool was not too cold
It can get full so check first. I managed to get in when it was quieter
The jacuzzi could have stronger jets …
The ground floor rooms were comfortable and large with big beds , but depending on location , I believe one could hear noises early in the morning.

To be honest, an overall terrible experience, the self check in to start was impersonal and no staff around , I agree with the earlier review, young student staff with little hospitality And basic service experience, There are constraints because of Covid but I feel displaying a 4 star rating when not able to live up to that expectation is very very wrong, the decor and atmosphere overall was tired ,cold and in need of a good update, using your only 2 modern rooms to advertise the Manor is bad. After a very long and hot walk on our first day we returned to the hotel to have a refreshing shower before dinner to find we had no running water, there is no front desk and the phones are not answered after 5pm as running on skeleton staff,I had to put on a both robe and go down to find someone to help, almost 2 hours later and another 2 trips downstairs I was told the plumber was on the case, unacceptable ,there should be an number to call In an emergency. The only plus point I can give this hotel is the food. Oh and a bottle of wine for our no water fiasco.

We stayed here for a 30th Birthday celebration (thanks for the complimentarily bottle of Prosecco) and for the most part it was very nice. The hotel worked well given the current COVID-19 climate, check in was smooth and automated using kiosks, the room was very nice, the bed spacious and comfortable.

Breakfast was nice, operated smoothly but I feel like I need to point out a couple of things. On the 2nd morning I asked for an Americano and was told this was chargeable despite paying for Bed and Breakfast, similarly with the cooked breakfast I didn’t want some items but there was no flexibility or chance to swap the items I didn’t want for something I did.

When it came to check out, again it was automated but there was some confusion around the £28 charge on my room which no one could explain or tell me what it was for (this was not charged in the end). The hotel should know and be able to tell guests what is on the bill if there is a dispute.

Like I said, overall very good, just a couple of niggles that could easily be ironed out.

Having booked our rooms back in March, I was really looking forward to our trip which was just 5 nights. Having paid over £300 per night for each of the two rooms, I was confident we wouldn't be disappointed and even telephoned ahead to speak to staff to ensure our arrangements would be perfect.

On arrival, rooms (1 a single, 1 twin) were very disappointing. I've stayed in nicer Premier Inns for a quarter of the price. The bathrooms were tired, marked and showing mould. Our toilet seat was on the squew and the handle was at an angle which could break any moment. I have no idea how they can honestly charge so much.

The cleaners were young students and they just made your bed, no cleaning of bath, toilet and if you need extra toilet roll, they didn't even put it on the holder. One cleaner turned up at 3:45, we had just got back to our room from a day out, I told her not to bother.

No front desk to report any issues to, you had a whatsapp and either had to grab someone going from the bar to the kitchen to get any assistance.

There were many other issues, but I won't go into them all. I given my feedback to the Hotel but no surprise there - no reply, no refund, nothing.

My advice, don't go there unless you can book the apartments, which seemed to be okay.

We’ve stayed at The Merchants Manor several times now and each time we are greeted at the door by the friendly reception team. They take the time and effort to show you to your room and make sure you have everything that you need.
Dinner at the Merchants is something special, exquisitely presented food by friendly restaurant team that explain the origins and the inspiration of the dishes.
We stayed over for two nights this time and we must also thank the housekeeping for such attention to detail within our room.
We also make use of the pool, sauna and steam room whilst there.
I would highly recommend using this hotel if you’re in Falmouth.

The room we had was good but the view from the window was a wall and the noise from the tennis club was a bit much at times. So you don’t want that room. I would imagine the tennis still goes on in the winter with flood lights. We still enjoyed our stay.
