Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Great little place with plenty to do close by. Went away with 3 mates and none of us have a bad thing to say about it. Very friendly staff and locals. Reasonably priced. We hope to stay again in the future!

We stayed at the Lodge for 3nights on a Hen Do. The Lodge & staff made our weekend. They were so welcoming & went out of their way to help us in any way possible. Craig is such a lovely guy, helping us with directions, recommendations or bars/restaurants and things to do. The lodge is in a great location, 10minutes walk maximum to Fistral Beach & 5 minutes walk into the centre. I would definately stay at the Lodge if I were to visit Newquay again, thanks again Craig for your hospitality, you can rest now we have all gone!!

I would recommend not booking through lastminute.com or booking.com. The room we booked was falsely advertised with a twin room with two separate single beds and quite spacious. We arrived and the room was absolutely tiny and had bunk beds! The host took us to the room and was quite blasé when he told us that the toilet door was broken, apparently other guests before us broke it. Would have appreciated an offer for maintenance to come and fix it or something at least, but he just kind of mentioned it and left. So no privacy when going to the toilet. (There are toilets down stairs but not great when we have paid £84 a night for a room) We went and spoke to the lady on the front desk and she said she would send someone up to see to it but nobody came. We did make an attempt to find someone to ask to change rooms on our first night but we couldn't find anyone and by then we spent most of the time out and about so we tolerated it. The listing said parking available at the lodge, got a message the day before the trip to say no parking available so needed to use long stay £8.40 a day up the road. The listing also said breakfast but that was not an option when we arrived either. Walls are paper thin, could hear other guests snoring and we were lucky that it wasn't too busy during our stay but a few guests were up all night talking and you could hear every word. We appreciated that we booked a ''budget'' room but for £85 a night lacking basic facilities and the standard of the room was pretty shocking for that price! The only positive about the stay was the location, great for getting in to town easy. Also the girl on the front desk was sweet.

Visited with friends, cheap enough and in a good location, parking advertised but you can't actually park on site. The bathroom door didn't shut or lock it was too twisted, the windows knackered and seized open, and the locks dodgy on the front door really hard to lock. Random missing plaster etc inside the place and all abit run down. Staff were good though

Dear Future Guests, If you have been browsing our reviews, you will notice that this review is the only Bad Review that we have had since we opened our small business nearly 3 years ago. So we owe you an explanation as to why this guest wrote such a damning, damaging review. We are a small family-run business and sometimes we get bookings from Booking.com And so MrUddin booked to stay with us via Booking.com for 5 nights. We saw and spoke to this guest every day, we chatted every morning at breakfast and helped him choose places to visit that would be child friendly. On the 3rd day of their stay, we got a call from Booking.com to say the guest was unhappy and wanted to leave and get a refund???? Please note at this point, the guest had never mentioned there were any problems whatsoever to us in person. Since this guest had never once mentioned there was a problem with his room, obviously we were really concerned because we had seen the guest every single day for days, there was banter and friendliness and no complaints whatsoever? Booking.com then informed us that the guest did not like the room, the children could not sleep and they thought the room was damp and so they wanted to leave immediately and expected a refund. We then approached the guest about this phonecall from Booking.com, because we did not understand why they waited 3 days to complain and then complain about the room to Booking.com (and not to us directly)? And while this complaint was being generated behind our backs, the guest was all the time smiling and chatting with us every morning at breakfast - so we were genuinely upset and worried when we found out about the complaint and the manner in which it was actioned. When we then asked the guest about their complaint, he told us his complaint was correct and that he had also expected entertainment every night and entertainment for the children??? Just to clarify at this point, we are a surf lodge, not a holiday resort nor a 5 star hotel - we are good, clean budget accommodation who have never ever offered guest entertainment. We immediately offered the guest a Free Upgrade to a larger room, as we do not want any guest to have a bad experience - but they refused to even look at the upgrade room we offered, and still wanted to leave. So now to mention the guests TripAdvisor comments, they are completely false and unjustified. We believe this review was done in anger because the guest expected a refund for cutting his own holiday short. During the first few days of the guests stay it was gloriously sunny, on the day they complained to Booking.com (coincidence or not?) we had non-stop, torrential rains - we believe this is the moment the guest decided to cut his holiday short and hope for a refund by complaining. We had noted previously that the guest had been leaving their windows wide open all day and night in torrential rain, but since they would not allow our staff to enter their room to do a daily service, we couldn't check the room nor service it. When the guest checked out, we found no damp at all on the carpets or curtains thankfully, but the duvet covers on the bed were damp (not the duvet itself or the sheets), so we guessed that the guests had been leaving their soaked clothes lying on top of the beds instead of using the storage and hooks provided. We did however note that in the bathroom there was a tiny bit of damp appearing in the wall corner, we believe it was a result of the windows being left open in torrential rain, coupled with damp clothing being left on the bed which caused the bathroom to over-condense in these conditions (the wettest, dampest weather of the summer). We also do not offer WIFI in the bedrooms, this is clearly stated on our website and also on Booking.com that the WIFI is in the public bar area and not the bedrooms. And to say the "Manager" (actually the owner, Craig) was unhelpful was perhaps the most stinging and upsetting comment of all. We are a family run business who work very hard to build our business in a horribly competitive market, we go out of our way to help our guests, many who have become our good friends in the 3 short years we've owned our business. You won't find many hotels where the owner will personally drive to the train station to pickup guests because it's raining. You won't find many hotels where the owner will sit up with guests consoling them and offering them cups of tea as they regale stories of their lives. You won't find many hotels that will bend over backwards to help others even if it means a small sacrifice on our part. You won't find many hotels that will take a young family in for the night and make them a camp in our lounge until we find a room for them, because the accommodation they originally booked was a flea pit and they had to leave with no-where else to stay, everyone else turned them away except us, because no family with a small child should ever have to sleep in a car. You won't find many hotels that just simply go the extra mile and offer a warm, personable service all because we care, because we genuinely like people, because we are a family run business and not a big corporate hotel and we run our business with good hearts and mindfulness. So Dear Future Guest, I hope MrUddin's review doesn't put you off staying with us, we can only hope it doesn't. Craig & Carol

Me and 3 of my friends stayed here from thursday to sunday. The room was very basic and when we arrived in our room there were crumbs and hairs on all of our linen and a hole in the side of the wall. However after politely mentioning the linen to the staff they were promptly changed and two bottles of drink were given to us as an apology. There was only one wall plug in our four person room so when us 4 girls were getting ready with straighteners and things it was a bit akward. The breakfast was very basic aswell with a toaster, bread, and a choice of weatabix and cornflakes so you could help yourself. The lodge itself isnt too far from the town but on a night out if you are planning on going to the clubs at the end of town such as the beach and walkabout, i suggest any girls wearing heels invest in some fold up pumps for the journey home otherwise it will be a very painfull and long walk home!
The room wasn't awful but on the last night we met some people that were staying in the travel lodge closer in town which was a million times better and bigger than our room and they were only paying £75 for two people and we were paying £35 for our very basic cramped room!

Had a great stay at the Ocean surf Lodge whilst visiting family in Newquay. We had a family room which was basic but clean and spacious enough for the 5 of us. The hotel has a great bar with good food. the staff are especially nice and couldn't do enough for us especially Pip! If you're after a basic hotel in a great location close to the beach with good service then this is the place for you!

Had the greatest of times at the Ocean Lodge. The location is absolutely splendid, looking out of the golf pitch and fistral beach. The staff themselves were superb as well. Only drawback was one of the guys from WaterShed who was intoxicated and started acting snobbish, which might happen again as there is a collaboration between the Ocean Lodge Bar and Watershed.
