Having just arrived home from staying at The Glendeveor I can say the experience was a good one.

Positives:

Price
Perfectly located
Very clean
Modern bathroom
Family room was a nice size
Covid one way system was very well organised
Young lady hosting was very helpful

Negatives:

Parking
Modernisation in the restaurant & public areas
Shower isn’t very powerful

Overall:

The location is perfectly situated right in the middle of Newquay so either direction (beach dead ahead, right or left are shops and restaurants).

The stay was really nice. The room was very clean and well presented. The bathroom was modern with an electric shower (not the most powerful but still did the job)

Breakfast was organised by room numbers in time slots during Covid. There was only allowed one group in the kitchen area at a time to pick self serve hot and cold food. Face marks were worn and disposable gloves were provided.

Parking is the biggest issue 33 rooms and 22 spaces. I don’t like the hassle of finding parking, worrying about its security whilst staying. This is the only thing that really. They could do with a barrier system where I’d happy pay extra to ensure guaranteed parking. This would also enable using the car whilst visiting and not having your space taken as soon as you move.

I would say one thing though for the owners to remove the ladder and hooks from the exit path as my daughter (7) narrowly missed walking into one at eye height. That would have been an extremely bad accident as the foam pads have worn from the edges. Luckily I spotted her and leaped to push her aside last minute.

Throughly enjoyed the stay and booking to visit Newquay next year 2021.

Visiting Newquay in mid summer on the tail end of lockdown due to the covid 19 pandemic my daughter and I had a little trepidation to say the least but were very much in need of a break.
Never having stayed at the Glendeveour before we were unsure what to expect but were very pleasantly surprized.
Absolutely crystal clear signage as to how things would be done and what was expected of us made it very easy to get it right. Enter the hotel only whilst wearing a facemask and sanitize your hands. Marissa on the desk was clear and concise abou thow we were to follow a one way system , special breakfast time allocations etc.
We chose not to have our room serviced and made our own beds but had we requested it it would have been done. Although we had minimal contact with the staff we never felt abandoned, there was always someone available with a quick ring of the service bell at reception so spare loo rolls, towels, tea etc was always on hand if needed.
The room was very bright clean and airy with plenty of space to move about. Our only criticism would be that the bathroom was tiny , bending down in the shower was a touch difficult. As the staff and locattion etc were all so good we could forgive the small issue.
I would dfinately stay here again and would also reccomend it to friends but I would say if you are very large be aware of the shower size and if you are disabled make sure you get a ground floor room as we had to climb two flights and there is no lift. All best wishesand great respect to the owner and staff for doing thier utmost to make sure we all stayed safe and socialy distanced whilst still having a pleasant stay, we really feel for them having had such a dreadful season and wish them well for the future.

came here to stay with son and 3 grandchildren the rooms were lovely and the family room for 4 people was perfectly adequate. Bathroom/shower room was great. Breakfast was good plenty of choice and a variety of food. Covid set up was very well arranged - 1 way system throughout hotel hand sanitizer at entrances gloves for use in Breakfast room etc. Rooms spotless and staff very friendly warm and welcoming. A stones throw from town restaurants and beaches WiFi perfect. Free parking. I cannot praise this place enough.

I’ll start with the positives. The breakfast at this place is great. A nice choice of cereals, fruit, pastries, yoghurt, toast, tea/coffee, juice and hot food like sausages, eggs and beans. The bed in the room was comfy. It was clean. The location is ideal - about 5 mins walk from Great Western Beach and the centre where there are shops and bars/eateries galore.

Up to here you’re probably thinking - sounds ideal, what more do you want in a b&b? Let’s take a look…

First of all there is a distinct lack of parking. If you’re looking at this on a budget please add in £10/day and a 5 minute walk because you’ll be spending/walking that every day if you’re driving.

Although the rooms are clean the walls, windows and ceilings aren’t noise proof and this means you’ll be woken by seagulls, cars, drunks, other guests - day and night.

The “best” surprise though is the owner, John. He’s lovely but a man who would probably be in his element at a health and safety convention. I have never in my life seen so many signs in a single building. *everything* is labelled!! The most amusing was a sliding bathroom door which had a label and arrow “slide” on the *inside*…Bearing in mind you had to slide it to go inside in the first place, it’s unclear exactly what sort of IQ John thinks his guests have.

On one occasion I rang the reception bell twice (as there was no answer the first time) and was told by John to please only ring it once! The backdrop of 1970s decor plus his attitude reminded me of Rik Mayall from the TV show Bottom trying to run a guesthouse. Despite people no longer needing to wear masks this hotel is operating a fully covid secure environment, which John loves because it gives him control (or what he thinks is control) over his guests. There is a “system” for obtaining breakfast and you’ll be told in minute detail what it is much to John’s delight!

Overall this place did the job but if you’re going don’t expect anything above a roof over your head. I wouldn’t stay again but on the other hand it wasn’t the most expensive place and definitely shows what’s meant by the phrase “you get what you pay for”. The location makes up for a lot of the flaws and if it wasn’t for that it would be a 1 star review.

It won’t win any design awards but it’s perfectly fine if you are on a budget and want somewhere central. My room was very clean and tidy with amazing views out over the town and headland. Bed very comfy and the room was warm. En suite was an unexpected bonus - again very clean and the shower was good.

I was rather baffled by the gradual reveal of instructions for gaining entry to the place but presumably this is because there is no reception and they don’t want people staying an extra night without paying. I would say that it needs to be clearer that staff are not on site 24/7 because as a single female I might have thought twice before booking, especially when I saw the drunk and unpleasant clientele of the Sutherland next door. On the same theme, I would have liked another lock on the door of my room - this is fairly standard in most hotels.

Overall it’s good value for money and I would certainly stay again.

As far B&Bs go in Newquay, I think the Glendover is the best one to stay at for cost, comfort and service. Not to mention it's five mintues from the beach. The staff were very helpful in making sure their customers are satisfield with their stay despite the Covid-19 safetey rules at that time. The room was also very clean and the beds were comfortable.

What a great weeks stay, we was greeted by John the owner who could not have done more to make us welcome and feel safe in this time of covid troubles.
The staff there are superb, helpful, nothing was to much trouble and they are very friendly.
The hotel itself gives you just what you need, a clean room with storage for clothes and holiday bits n bobs we all seem to take along, comfortable beds and a good sized shower/toilet.
The breakfast offered gives you a varied choice so all tastes and needs will be catered for.
The location is ideal, a short walk to all beaches and amenities but also far enough away for a quiet and restful nights sleep. The view from the front of the hotel of the sea is great to see in the morning.
We as a family or just as a couple will definitely be going back for another stay.

Very very happy with our stay! We stayed for the valentines weekend which falls into the part of the r bathroom was modern, bath a very good size.

The communal space was really good! Pool table for £1 a game, darts for free, and bookshelf, lots of room, ice freezers with ice buckets and any glass you could possibly want to use. There is a very good kitchen area with anything you could want including appliances, plates, cutlery, trays... There's even a washing machine, dryer, iron and ironing board! Location is amazing, surrounded by great restaurants, cafes, town, shops, the cinema, aquarium and only a short walk to the sea.

I would hugely recommend this hotel. Value for money is amazing and we will definitely be returning!

Very welcoming, super friendly host. Also, very accommodating as we needed to change our travel dates short notice. The location is also very central, right next to the beach, a 5-10 minute walk. Parking right behind the house.

We arrived at B&B , the main owner the gentleman was very helpful advising us that s lots of staff had to isolate that there would be no breakfast - we were notified of this prior to coming . Yes it is dated and I found the girl on reception very rude. 1st night we stayed there we came back to the B&B at 10.30pm instead of the 10pm and I rang the bell . My husband had came home slightly later than me and I had 2 children with me but no key . As I was only 30 mins later than the allocated time - I had to ask for fresh towels as we had been at the beach the whole day . She then became quite aggressive at me telling me I should ask in the morning time . I was shocked to say the least . I felt on edge throughout our stay there . Shame because the gentleman owner was really helpful shame can’t be said for the girl on reception . Sorry but won’t be returning. I wouldn’t recommend for anyone with mobility problems who is not in a vehicle as on top of hill .

Answer from John J
Newquay, United Kingdom
Dear Jennie, We have operated as a B&B only for the last 6 years and normally only open from around Easter until the end of September. This year we are trying to see if we can use our establishment during the winter months as we know running as a B&B would not be viable, so we have set up a room only option that runs from October until a little before Easter at which point we will go back to our normal B&B set up. Unfortunately the main site we use to get bookings does not allow us to have a 2 tiered front page to clearly show the difference in what we are doing. Currently on there system we can only be a B&B or something else and not both. As we are still mainly a B&B so we don't want to change the bulk of the details. We have had long chats with the people from booking. com and have made the best of what they can do, which is set up all new room catergories which have more information in the details about our room only option. Due to the difficultly in clearly advertising the new winter option we do contact all guests that book to make sure they know what they have booked and to give them a chance to cancel free of charge if it is not what they expected. I am pleased to say though that overall it has worked very well and has been seen as a great value alternative to stay in Newquay. I hope that answers your question but if you need anymore information then please let us know. Kind Regards John

Yes that is absolutely fine. We have no policy on this matter. It is perfectly fine for same sex friends, colleagues or couples to share rooms/beds. Thank you for your enquiry, if you have any more questions please don't hesitate to ask.
