Travellers' Choice
The Idle Rocks has the most enviable location in St Mawes, overlooking the harbour with views across the River Fal to Falmouth. Our 18 bedrooms, most with stunning vistas over the bay, have been thoughtfully designed, each having their own unique identity with fabulous fabrics and decor that leave you in no doubt that you are by the sea. After a long day lazing on the beach, our south facing terrace is the perfect place to relax, have a long drink, and watch the world go by. You may even see your dinner being landed on the harbourside. The Idle Rock's restaurant, led by our Executive Head Chef, Dorian Janmaat, is a celebration of Cornwall; showcasing a range of fabulous produce that has been sourced locally using only seasonal fresh ingredients. In many cases it will have been swimming right on our doorstep only a few hours earlier and while the food is of the very highest standard our setting is very relaxed.

As with the 'other' hotel across the bay, we always eat here once when we stay in St Mawes. There was a bit of a scare as we understood that it had closed due to a Covid outbreak over Christmas which must have been a nightmare for the business. Fortunately, we were able to get a table on December 30th in the evening. We really love it here - the décor, the staff, the views, the ambience and of course the views. Initial drinks service was a little 'clunky' and staff apologised for a delay and explained that they were still a little short on numbers - Not a problem for us really, we were in no rush! Food was epic and service thereafter was faultless. As with the competition across the bay, it's not cheap here but it is most definitely well worth it. We'll be back again in a few months.

Beautiful location. Lovely front of house staff on arrival. The details were a let down. It took four phone calls and numerous emails to get confirmation of my booking. No deposit taken until call number three so got quite concerned. The final call for confirmation to me in writing made me cry. The man I had spoken to three times was very rude to me. Told me he was doing me a favour as we had agreed a discount on our three night stay by including a free meal. I then requested to be put onto the winter rocks deal because it was better than the one he had put me on. When we arrived they had forgotten to put in the sparkling wine, I had to ask. They hadn’t booked us into their restaurants at the times I had requested or even booked us in. Luckily we got in. The seven course dinner was underwhelming. Our monk fish was dried out and tough. I could hear other customers complaining too. The deserts were not special. It was not, in my opinion, a memorable meal. On a positive the staff that we met were so helpful. They made our visit a pleasure. It was the back office that let the hotel down and the poor dinner we received in the hotel. We have had much better tasting menus elsewhere. Breakfast was excellent.

Sadly underwhelmed , this must be the smallest hotel in the Relais and Chateaux group. Our room was basic and caused some problems for partner who is 6ft as the space between bottom of the bed and sloping ceiling window was tight to manoeuvre. A very small lounge was the only area other than our room, which only had one chair. Food was alright, expensive even by R&C standards. In house bottled water charged at £5 , at £330 per night plus £95 for dinner this is a bit much when on departure you are given water! Lobster ravioli sauce over reduced too salty to eat. Desserts boring. Other hotels within this group ( both UK and Worldwide) have been exceptional in quality and service. Mediocre at best. No return for us.
