The Country House takes its name from the novel by Sir Walter Scott, with the oldest part of the building dating back to the 1830s, and enjoys a stunning location in the quaint Peak District village of Thorpe. The Country House has 11 acres of manicured gardens and grounds and the towering hill of Thorpe Cloud as a backdrop. A footpath leads directly from the house to the famous stepping stones on the River Dove, on the Derbyshire and Staffordshire border

We thoroughly enjoyed our week’s holiday at the Peveril. The hotel’s location is perfect for walking so we didn’t need to use our car all week. Our room had obviously just been refurbished, with even an automatic nightlight in the bathroom, and all of the main rooms were pleasantly decorated. As usual with HF holidays, the staff were brilliant. I have dietary needs which the staff were very careful to accommodate by tweaking menus or giving information about ingredients. The week was fully catered for me without issue. I was surprised to find that even a ‘stay as you please’ week benefited from an HF host, who helped with walking routes, got people talking and organised quizzes and activities for those who wanted to join in. We are fans of HF Holidays generally and in our view, the Peveril clearly maintains the company’s high standards.

Stayed here over the Easter weekend on an HF guided tour holiday. We had a superior room overlooking the gardens. A large, pleasant room with a decent size bathroom (a shower and bath tub). The food is very good as well as the service. The only negative point I have is that they only have a very limited room cleaning. Basically they only wash the coffee mugs and empty the bins. They don’t make the bed or clean drinking glasses. They blame that on lockdown - I fail to see the connection in 2023, unless is just an excuse to save money by employing fewer people.

The best thing about Peveril is the staff. They are very welcoming and the food service is brilliant. It must be very hard for them, with the Covid restrictions, but they are coping very well. We stayed four mid-week nights and had a superb lamb dinner on the first evening. The service is full board with the lunch being a packed bag, with plenty of choice, ordered the previous evening. Subsequent breakfasts had plenty of options, and evening meals had three choices. We'd chosen a 'best' room and it was lovely, quiet and spotless too - and I heard that most rooms had newish really smart bathrooms like ours. We had three days of walking in most beautiful countryside and didn't need to take the car out once; everywhere we wanted to go was really close by. The only downside is that first impressions aren't that good, if you're coming by car, as the exterior and gardens need some work. Having said that, they're rooms and the food are both excellent so I would definitely recommend this spot for Peak District walking holidays.

I stayed for a 4 night guided walking holiday with a group of friends. The accommodation is exceptionally clean, comfortable, slightly dated but perfectly good. I was amazed at the quality and variety of food. Everything was cooked to perfection and with great attention to detail. The local food evening was wonderful and included a wonderful home baked Bakewell Tart. The food on offer deserves a 5* rating without a doubt. All staff were extremely helpful and polite. The drying room for boots and outer clothing was fantastic and included plenty of sinks and brushes to clean up boots. A very well run hotel and I would definitely recommend to others. Thank you HF Holidays!

We happened to be among the first group of walkers coming here since lockdown. The hotel had been properly prepared to allow for social distancing, with two sittings for each meal to cater for everyone. Common areas were regularly cleaned, and hand sanitisers were everywhere. The food was of a high standard, and the hotel had done all it could to provide a safe environment for guests.

Terrific 4 days of self-guided, solo, walking. Excellent food, everything very clean, pleasant service. Loads of choice for packed lunch. Outstanding set up for walkers - boot room, maps and plenty of walk guides. They have a route notification system in place - invaluable when walking alone. Nice touch was extra tea-making supplies. Just feels like they have really thought about what makes a great walking holiday.

We were with a group of 14. Due to Covid-19 restrictions breakfast & dinner were at two sittings & we had to choose our times on arrival. Unfortunately this meant that not all our party were able to sit together regularly at mealtimes. It was a shame really. The guided walks were well organised & well led. Setting off from the house each day was a novel experience. Service by the staff was very good & they were all most polite. Our "better room" was well worth the extra as it was large & well furnished with a decent bathroom. Our "indoor balcony" was great for my reading duties. When the bar area returns to normality it will be a vast improvement. Social distancing & hand sanitation regulations were followed at all times.

Everything was perfect: excellent food, comfortable room, very friendly and efficient staff, beautiful hikes in the surrounding area with 3 very knowledgeable guides and very fun evening activities. As a French person, I didn't know this region and it was a great discovery. I had a great stay with my French and English hiking friends.

Vodaphone worked for me but only at front of house. Seemed ok elsewhere in dove dale, but remember this is great county side and very hilly so don't expect miracles
