An overnight stay in this quirky hotel, as seen in television a year or so ago. The new proprietor Steve is spot on. Friendly and helpful without being over the top. In fact all the staff were friendly but this new venture is Steve’s baby and you can tell he is in it because he wants to be. We were given a small but beautifully appointed room on the first floor which was spotlessly clean and boasted pristine white bedding on a very comfortable bed and soft fluffy towels. Little extras like the toiletries, a choice of bottled water and hot chocolate sachets in the room made all the difference. The evening menu was small and my beer battered cod and chips was good but not amazing. Breakfast was plentiful and relaxed although limited vegetarian choice but I am sure this was an oversight which will be remedied before the next vegetarian shows up.

An excellent stay and the team at The New Inn Clovelly should be proud of themselves.

We really appreciate the time that our guests are taking to give us feedback after all of our hard work. You’re right-it is Steve’s baby and he is hugely passionate about it! As we move forward our food options will become more varied, but it’s lovely to read that you enjoyed the little extras in your room! We love to create a cosy but stylish atmosphere for you to arrive. Your kind words really are appreciated. Bysha

The New Inn in, perched near the top of the cobbled lane that leads to the harbour which draws in tourists by the coach loads, has many things in it's favour. Apart from its uniquely picturesque location, the building itself is charming and well proportioned. Rooms are simply decorated (ahead of a more extensive update later in the year) and the restaurant with checkered red and white table cloths and mismatched china urges you to relax into it's homeliness. But the greatest assets are the team; Beth, Danielle and Darcy transform this hotel from pleasant to unforgettable. Dynamic, organised and warm, they made our stay truly magical. After wandering in as backpackers looking to spend a dry night, offers of bath salts and leggings were quickly proffered, with rooms rejigged to accommodate us. 1 night became 3. And if work and real life hadn't called that could have been years not days. We cannot thank you enough, the brightest spot in the trip. Thank you, Lisa (And ensure you book breakfast by chef Robert, a delicious calorific treat).

Location :
There are only two hotels to stay in Clovelly, initially I thought staying by the Harbour might be better , however i changed my mind after 24 hours as staying at the new inn is a more picturesque location of an evening and ever so peaceful as the tourists start to disappear.
I’m in my 50’s , overweight and not in the greatest health and the steep path up to hotel didn’t kill me, intact by day 2 I started to get used to it.

Hotel Public areas:
It has a quite sizable reception & lounge for the age of the building with some comfy seating to relax in at the end of the day

Hotel Room (#4)
Quirky layout, big bathroom , bed was on the smaller size and partner said it was firm . I’m fussy myself but found it comfortable enough , the. Bedding and pillows had a sumptuous quality feel to them. Noise isolation from hotel is only a arrange , however this is not an issue because no ones having a late night or particular early start from my experience

Staff
Very friendly and helpful. They all live in the village and take pride in creating a village atmosphere. Especially of note was a young lady who I think is called Daniela who was always smiling and chatty and helped me find my misplaced medicine bag. I have no complaints about any of the staff . All helpful in their own way

Food
Food was nice enough although I would’ve like a slightly broader menu. Girlfriend loved the fish curry . I would’ve like some more locally caught fish on the menu.
A previous reviewer mentioned prices . it is not cheap to eat anywhere in Clovelly but this is to be expected for a location such as this .

Overall

I would highly Recommend the New Inn to anyone looking to stay in Clovelly , we had 3 nights and loved the whole experience.
As an aside there is only a receptionist early on in the day , many other reviewers have complained about un answered calls . I would suggest calling before 11 am. Don’t think they’ve been open very long and still getting on their feet .

Lovely welcoming pub, chatty local landlord, perfectly positioned halfway up Clovelly Hill.
We stopped here for a drink and a bite to eat when visiting Clovelly. We had our 18 month old with us and needed the pit stop on the walk back up. We found some shade in the sunny beer garden.
Drinks where all locally brewed and very nice, the food was even better still.
The menu is limited but has all you need, sweet and savory scones (the cheese scones where delicious) sandwiches with Devon Crab or Devon Ham and much more.
They even put together a special Crab salad for my Mum who is Coeliac (Gluten free).
The landlord instructed the waitress to ensure the salad was prepared separately to avoid cross contamination.
Great pub, helpful friendly staff, beautiful location.
Well done, we look forward to a return visit.

Clovelly is lovely , if you are fit and have sensible shoes and don’t mind being out of breath
The new inn hotel is as an old English pub should be .
Shout out to Beth , Danielle and Steve . Our room 6 was tiny and I mean tiny . It was very dated and needs work to make it cosy but it was clean . Needs thicker pillows and a new mattress . Curtains could be made to look more up to date and hung properly. The dining room really needs attention, fire could be lit, curtains on the windows, pretty salt and petter pots and nice candles .it needs a refurbished dinning room ideally or even just spruced up
The food was very good - new Italian chef .
Breakfast is very good - home made sausages and bacon . Cereal , fresh local milk ,
As much tea and coffee as you like

A twin en suite room was booked through an agent as a stop over on a South West Coast Path walk. When we arrived we were told that the key to the only twin room had been taken home by a previous customer and therefore was unusable so we were given a room with a double bad and a folding bed. The room was on the second floor of the building opposite the New Inn , which is actually advertised on Airbnb as Hamlyn's hostel. There was no apology or discount. Neither bed was suitable, one was child sized, the other had a mattress so uncomfortable because of the fastenings I had to sleep on top of the quilt to stop it digging into me. There was no fire door, the bathroom was on the other side of a small corridor, privacy was ascertained only by a door with a bolt on it. The room was in bad decorative order, the windows didn't open and there was condensation pouring off them. Everywhere in Clovelly was shut except for the two hotels so we had to buy food at the New Inn. The Red Lion was only open to it's own residents. I have Coeliac disease and as such require a gluten free diet. The only options on the dinner menu was vegetable curry, lamb curry and Lobster. The Lobster was a minimum of £22, I don't eat lamb so I felt the only reasonable option was the vegetable curry. This was tasteless, had no curry flavour whatsoever and I ate because I was hungry. My advice is do not go to the New Inn if you need a gluten free diet. There was no where to buy our lunch for the next day so we had no option but to buy a packed lunch. It was £12 each which was extortionate.

Just returned from a wonderful trip to Clovelly. My partner and I spent 4 nights at the New Inn and it was quite magical. From the trip down the cobbles (towing your luggage on a bread crate named Kate the
Great) looking at the beautiful views of the fishing harbour below and then to round the corner and see the New
Inn’s welcoming sign in front of you to the warm welcome and the most cozy room all was enchanting and seemed very special. The staff were all so friendly and helpful and breakfast was a great start to the day with really tasty local produce and an abundance of fresh coffee. It’s a short walk down to the harbour and the water was really inviting for swimming in - so beautiful and clear and not too cold even in October. The New Inn is perfectly situated half way down the hill so trips up or down Clovelly are not too much trouble.
Clovelly is a magical and most beautiful village and the New Inn fitted in perfectly, warm, welcoming and such friendly staff made for an unforgettable break

On arrival the staff were wonderful and welcoming. We were immediately shown to our room which was lovely and spacious with a view of the sea (across buildings) and everything we needed including a comfy bed, tea & coffee making facilities, TV and a lovely bathroom.
We had a delicious dinner in the bar on the first night which was great fun as there were lots of locals in the bar who were all friendly and chatty. On the second night we had diner at the Red Lion which was also nice but we came back in time for a drink at the New Inn as it was much more fun.
The owners of the Hotel also own their own brewery so the beer is all locally brewed and delicious.
I would highly recommend this hotel. It has friendly and helpful owners and staff in a wonderful location right in the heart of the village so not too far to walk back to the car park.

We booked 3 nights (paid for 1 extra on top of the Travelzoo deal). We were initially surprised at the very steep walk, with our bags down to the hotel (it’s far easier without luggage!).
We had a warm greeting and was shown to our rather tired room, but we had a sea view and a bath, which I had requested.
The entire hotel could benefit from being updated. The windows frames had thick gloss paint peeling off, carpets were worn and grubby, but our room itself was clean and functional, (room 4) it could have benefitted from a chair and dressing table, but in fairness no where for them to go!
Staff were all friendly and helpful, breakfast was plentiful and well cooked, we only ate in the actual restaurant once and were disappointed that 2 out of 4 starters we unavailable and one of the main courses was unavailable also.
I had roasted cod, which was pleasant, and a cheeseboard, nice cheeses but served very cold, which detracted from the cheese.
Our room was not cleaned at all during our stay so we had to get additional toilet roll and ask for a bin bag to empty our bins. I think the towels and bins should’ve been emptied at least once during our 3 night stay.
We were lucky enough to stay over the Herring Festival weekend, where we were treated to local folk music & stalls selling local produce.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, 3 nights was plenty, to be able to see and do everything we felt Clovelly has to offer, for that reason alone, we’d possibly return for the day, but not to stay again.

Myself, my partner and our little Shih Tzu stumbled upon this place on day 3 of a 3 day trip to Devon. It was such a lovely place to stay we ended up staying 6 nights and had to pop to a local shop for more clothes. Everyone we spoke to was extremely friendly and helpful and the room was great and easy to keep cool during the very hot week. The setting itself was lovely with the cobbled streets in the village especially in the quieter evenings making us feel like we could be anywhere in the world. The breakfast was great in the mornings with the host even going to the trouble to order an extra sausage for the dog. We enjoyed the evening menu eating here most nights while happily finishing a number of the local gins. I would 100% recommend this place and have already to a number of my friends and colleagues. We will definitely be back even if its just to say we have finally watched the Fawlty Towers episode with the Shih Tzu.

Hello there! Thank you for your message, and apologies for the late reply, we are still in a transition of management so the Trip Advisor has suffered for that! You do not need to worry about parking at all. Your satnav and the road directions will guide you to a huge car park at the Visitor Centre (plus extra room with an overflow one!) if you arrive in opening hours of the centre they will simply point you through once you say you’re staying with us. You won’t even need to display anything in your car! If you arrive afterwards you will see a gate to the right of the building which leads you through. Short answer is park up and do not worry a bit! Use it as you would a space at home. Hope that helps! Bysha :)

Hello! There is no parking at the New Inn, however there is a public car park around 100m away. There is no vehicular access to Clovelly street, you will see why when you get there! The Red Lion Hotel is on the harbour at the bottom of the hill, there is a separate road access that can only be used if you are staying there, there is parking there. Higher Clovelly has a few B&B's. Hope that helps, Paul

Hi there, Clovelly is a pedestrianised village due to the steep cobbled street. Parking is situated at the top of Clovelly, you need to leave your car at the top and walk down the cobbles to us, approximately 10 minute walk.
