We chose the Stoke Lodge Hotel due to its location to Dartmouth, its availability and the reasonable price (for 2021 staycations). Situated overlooking the village of Stoke Fleming, just a 10 min drive from Dartmouth and with views of the sea, this hotel was an ideal location for our 4 night stay. The double room on the 1st floor was cozy but had obviously been recently modernised to a very good standard, especially the ensuite bathroom. The beds were very comfortable however the room did become a little warm in the evening and the installation of air conditioning would be a good idea. The lounge and dining areas were very nice and the breakfast was 1st class. There is an indoor and outdoor pool which was great and very clean.
All the staff were very welcoming and helpful at all times despite the fact that they were all very busy.
A great family run hotel that we'd always recommend.

I booked last minute at this hotel having chosen it for its rural location. I was blown away by how cheap it was. The location is great for the trip I wanted - easy access to small, attractive towns like Dartmouth, coastal walking and beaches.

The room had obviously been recently decorated and had a nice view looking towards the sea. I found I preferred the ham and eggs option to the fried breakfast in the morning and there were other options too.

The staff were very pleasant and accommodating and it was very quiet at night.

On booking I compared this hotel with a waterfront one in Torquay. The latter may have given me a little more luxury but I was very impressed by the fact I got a whole stay at the same price as one night at the other place.

The crowning triumph is the evening meal. The set up is quite informal but the quality of the food is excellent and I thoroughly enjoyed the meals. Hotels are often quite empty for evening meals but this was well frequented and it is clear to see why.

Back in January, I needed to find accommodation for three weekends for several family members. Bearing in mind that one of these weekends coincided with the Platinum Jubilee, this was no easy task. Fortunately, through “Walk the Trail”, I was introduced to Stoke Lodge Hotel. I could not have been more lucky. This family run Hotel is full of the most welcoming and pleasant staff at all levels. Nothing is too much trouble and it is all done in such a relaxed way. The rooms are good; the facilities, including both indoor and outdoor pools as well as a well-kept games room are brilliant; the food is excellent with every effort made to ensure that large parties are seated together – in fact, on one occasion, we were actually moved to another part of the Hotel, which made life more difficult for the waitresses, but they were fully compliant. Indeed, one of the grandchildren spontaneously commented one morning at breakfast how nice the staff were. A special birthday cake was also made and served for the 7 year old. I cannot recommend this Hotel highly enough and if ever I return to the area, it will be my first point of call. Our walks went off as well as we could have hoped and Stoke Lodge Hotel was “the icing on the cake”. Thank you all so much.

Arrival

When we entered our room at first glance it looked clean and we were assured it had been sanitised as per Covid Regulations. I found belongings from the previous occupants on top of a shelf in the wardrobe suggesting the room was not cleaned properly. I told the person on reception who immediately became argumentative about how well the room was cleaned.

To be fair they did send somebody up to clean the whole room, but nothing appeared to have been moved during this clean, so again, was it cleaned properly?

During these testing times, you would have hoped that hotels would take extra care, but we felt let down.

Meals

Breakfast. Very Good.

Evening Meal. Not good.

There was no menu available in advance, so it was potluck what you could order, and the choice was limited.

Two of us ordered the same chicken dish and one was double the size of the other. This is not right when you both pay the same.

The kids pizza was unpalatable, it really was not nice at all.

Chocolate Torte was smaller than my little finger, I thought it was a joke, so I sent it back. There was no acknowledgment or explanation from the staff about why I sent it back.

Overall, extremely disappointed, whilst the breakfast and morning staff were great, the rest of the experience was not good.

A friendly family hotel and they were very accommodating, spotlessly clean, but sadly, although we had an updated room, it was still dated and bathroom seemed ancient. No character in public areas, some of which structurally dingy and battered still, restaurant seemed more like a canteen, although the information says it's 'attractive '. They also talk a lot about a previous owner being a chef but sadly dinner food was dissapointing for how expensive it was, badly cooked and seemed all bought in or reheated. Service at dinner was friendly but waitress got things mixed up and they didn't know the menu.

Good Evening Thank you for taking the time to write a review- although reading it makes me thing you may have the wrong hotel?! Our restaurant was completely gutted and fully renovated in January/February this year and certainly not "like a canteen"!! I've never eaten in any canteen which offers full table service. And our food is freshly produced and locally sourced from good local suppliers and very reasonably priced for the area. The hotel has been run by our family for 40 years so their is definitely never any mention of the previous owner as a chef or anything else for that matter. The original hotel building is Georgian and still has many original features on show- perhaps not to your taste but certainly not lacking in character. And i can assure you the structure is perfectly sound! I'm sorry you did not enjoy your stay whether it was with us or another hotel! Take care and stay safe

The website of this hotel makes the hotel and rooms look very nice. Unfortunately our experience was somewhat different. The dining room has no carpet or table cloths now only very cheap furniture and a wooden floor. The evening meal was poor so after two days we went for bed and breakfast and ate out the rest of he holiday. The bedroom was nothing like shown on their website and the bathroom was not cleaned when the bed was made. Overall the website needs updating to show the hotel how it is now. They were short staffed which did not help. Having had relatives who have stayed here a few years ago we were very disappointed.

We have just returned from a four night stay that was so great we stayed for a further night. The hotel has been in the same family since the 80s and is a gem of a find just outside Dartmouth. We had a large modern room with a sea view and couldn't fault a thing. Every day we had a delicious cooked breakfast cooked to order and the evening meal was a definite five stars with an amazing choice of fresh fish with different sauces each night and superb vegetarian options also. They cater for everyone tastes. The staff were all amazing and looked after us so well to make us feel special. We totally recommend this hotel for anyone looking for a break in the South Hams area with great walking options over the South West coastal path and the stunning views.

This hotel was recommended, and it did not disappoint. It certainly ticks all the boxes for me. The room was spotless and had plenty of storage space. The bathroom was tiny with a shower over the bath, but it was very clean with soft white towels.
The food was very good. Well presented and served by very friendly staff. In fact I think the staff made the holiday. Everyone was so friendly and helpful. The outdoor pool was the icing on the cake. The weather was superb which helped!

I stayed last week for my first visit to the Stoke lodge, I have to say it was superb, from arrival to departure the staff could not have been more helpful and friendly. The food at breakfast and dinner was first class, two family members joined me for dinner one night they both were really impressed.
I have booked again for September!

A chance came up for a short break and we grasped the opportunity with both hands. We found this Hotel by a stroke of luck and are glad that we did! We booked half board and had wonderful morning and evening meals. The service was quick, the waiting staff very efficient and the meals delicious. We found that every member of staff was very friendly and helpful dealing with minor queries with logging into wifi etc. The only drawback? There are a fair amount of steps to negotiate and no obvious signs of easy access to the dining room which was on the lower ground floor. The Hotel is situated half way between Dartmouth and Slapton sands and a great base for those exploring a wonderful part of the Country.

How close is this to the festival in May?
Answer from Mary H
Dartmouth, United Kingdom13 contributions3 helpful votes
So sorry, only just seen this question so I don't know if you actually made it in May! The village of Stoke Fleming is 2 1/2 miles from Dartmouth and parking in the actual town during the Festival is a nightmare. However there is a park and ride at the top of the town, with buses running regularly. Taxis are good and not too expensive, especially if there's a group of you.
