This small friendly hotel is one of Dartmouth’s oldest and most interesting buildings. It was originally constructed as a Tudor merchant's house and would have been a welcome sight when the Pilgrim Fathers stopped off at Bayards Cove on their way to America in August 1620. The hotel is conveniently situated in Bayards Cove in the centre of this lovely town, with the market and main shopping area only a short level walk away. Guests are sure to enjoy the unique character of the hotel and its thoughtfully refurbished luxury rooms, all of which have freeview, televisions and DVD players, and some also enjoy views over the water of the cove.

From the moment we arrived the staff of the Bayard Cove were incredibly welcoming and throughout our 3 night stay attended to our every need; this includes everyone from the manager to every single member of their staff that served us a drink, snack and breakfast. There are very few places, of any grade, that we have stayed where the genuine desire by all was so consistently good. For that we congratulate the Bayards Cove Inn team.
We stayed in the Mountbatten Room which is a large characterful bedroom with a large comfortable bed. However the bathroom is very small and the shower pressure is no more than a trickle and the toilet handle did break, evidently not for the first time we subsequently discovered.
However the biggest issue is that the room is located next to the kitchen and above the restaurant. This means there is considerable ambient noise starting at 0700, and in the evening up to 2330. It’s fair to say that throughout the night it is absolutely silent and we did sleep well between those times. The extent of this ambient noise for what is one of their best, if not their very best room, is not advertised and was a rather negative surprise.
We paid £685 for 3 nights B&B which is very expensive, albeit there is peak demand for staycations at the moment.
I’m sorry to say that we would not return again to the Bayard Cove Inn for an overnight stay, but we certainly would revisit the restaurant because of the exceptionally good hospitality, and breakfast and lunch menu is good.

We were here from Monday to Friday last week staying in Raleigh which overlooked The Dartmouth Inn and the Dart. Met by James who explained everything to us. Beautifully kept room with quality furniture, bedding & towels. Large wardrobe with plenty of shelving. Really appreciated the complimentary bottled water, thank you. We were aware that there would be no servicing of the room but we asked for fresh towels and this was granted. We also had supplies of clean crockery, biscuits and water left for us at the door each day, thank you.
Every single staff member worked really hard and were clearly happy with what they were doing. In fact it seemed effortless to them. Hand sanitisers dotted around the stairs and on entry to the bar, all appropriate screens at the bar and restaurant area. Choice of any breakfast along with the cold drinks and cereals was great. Dining in the evening 3 times was perfect. The Bayards Cove Inn looked after us perfectly and we appreciated all that they did for us and every guest that walks through their door. The only thing we didn’t like was the fire alarm going off at 2.00am !!! Thank you all for a lovely few days.

Good reviews are always subjective and this will be no exception, we booked not long after the green light was given by the government for this type of establishment to re-open and with only two recent reviews to go on it was a bit of a gamble. We need not of worried as our two night stay exceeded our expectations and we had an amazing stay at Baynards Cove Inn. As others have said, the staff are a real credit and asset to the establishment and were always so helpful and obliging.
Our room (Raleigh) was clean, very comfortable and at the front of the inn with windows looking out over the street below and towards Bayards Cove itself. All the usual room complimentary items were provided with refills left outside the door each day. The room itself wasn't serviced during our stay due to COVID regulations but that made little difference to us.
One of our party is vegan and we ate in the restaurant both nights, the rest of Dartmouth doesn't seem to have woken up to the fact this type of diet is commonplace in the rest of the world. Both dishes were delicious and extra credit must be given to the Tofu burger which tasted amazing. Also, the breakfasts were equally as good and once again a tasty vegan option was available.
Yes, some things could be improved but these are so insignificant they really don't warrant me grumbling on about them.
Bayards Cover Inn gets a big thumbs up from us and we will certainly return another day when the Covid-19 pandemic is history.
BTW, parking is an issue in general in Dartmouth so do yourself a favour and research before you go, we used the park and ride with great success and daily fee top-ups can be managed from your phone using the Ringgo App. £5.30 per pay is nothing considering other areas of the country.

It’s been a while since we’ve stayed anywhere with such wonderful service. Nothing was too much trouble, staff were approachable and good humoured. Got the impression they genuinely liked working there. Attention to detail from the home made mince pies, proper coffee and loose leaf tea in rooms to dog bed/ treats and list of dog walks for our hound was just great. Kids loved the cosy bunk bed room - that with the river just outside and the distance sound of halyards jingling made us feel like we were on an old ship rather than hotel. Although that was maybe because the room listed very slightly (not the very good rijoca at dinner honest) my glass of water slid right off the bedside table! Bed super comfortable, best night sleep in ages. Couldn’t believe the high standard of breakfast included in the price. Huge choice, I had avocado, feta and smoky bacon on sourdough. All cooked to order rather than tepid self service you get at buffet hotels. Wish we’d booked 2 nights not just one! Definitely go to place to return to when in the area. Thanks so much!

We stayed herefor four days in September and have to report that this was simply the best hotel stay we have experienced in this country for a very long time. From the moment that we unloaded our cases, on a busy Saturday afternoon, we were treated with the utmost courtesy and professionalism. Our cases were taken upstairs- and brough down at the end of the trip. Our room at the front was clean and comfortable with a good shower. Breakfast was exceptional- I recommend the well filled bacon baps if youdont want the full English. Every single member of staff was completely on top of their game, with one of the breakfast servers going across the road to the opticians to sweet talk the owner into doing an emergency repair, which is still holding, to my spectacles for which therewasno charge. We had our evening meals in the restaurant, and mainly chose the daily changing fish specials.Altogether a superb experience especially being slightly end of season when the difficult Dartmouth parking did not impact so much.Thank you everyone at the hotel.

Pre-booked this place a few weeks ago as we knew we were coming on holiday. We looked at the menu before entering and were abit shocked as there wasn't much choice on the menu and it was all fancy food! £27 for a steak!!! One example. ! I realised it was the place next door I thought I had booked from going there previously, not this place, but as we booked we gave it a go as it seemed rude to just not turn up!

We didn't want any starters off the menu but asked if they did garlic bread? the waitress who was really nice, just moved from the channel Islands, went and asked, yep they did, so we asked for garlic bread for 4, bearing in mind 2 adults and 2 kids. What arrived was 3 large pieces of fancy seeded bread with abit of garlic butter, slightly warm EACH! But not garlic bread as anyone would notice, just fancy. we all ate one piece as we were waiting for our mains and to add insult to injury it cost £16!!!!! 😠😠 You could have bought 8 loaves of fancy bread for that . The rest of the food was very tasty but this really annoyed us, so to be given a bill which asked if we wanted to pay £5 service extra on top, of the £82 already, no, I don't think so. My husband was furious and I can assure you that whoever owns that place needs to realise they are not in London and people have bills to pay and work hard for their cash, you need to drop your prices!

The staff were lovely, but I'm sorry, I would not recommend this place it visit ever again.

Bayards is a charming & popular restaurant & bar located in Dartmouth old town. The building is likely to have originally been a 17th century coaching Inn which now contains an intimate and cosy restaurant with 7 ensuite letting rooms upstairs. Our room, albeit small, was lovely, quirky & comfortable with a good shower. There are 6 further rooms all accessed via narrow characterful stair cases -some with views over the bustling river Dart Estuary - only 50m away - so a great location. The young engaging staff serve a simple but delicious menu and good selection of wines. They are clearly very loyal to the private owners who apparently looked after them all well during lockdown. A good lesson to others in hospitality and is something that is clearly paying dividends now as other places are so short staffed with slow service whilst the service at Bayards was excellent and efficient. Highly recommended!

Parking in Dartmouth is at the barest minimum, which was a problem for us as we wanted to park the car for the couple of days that we were there because we weren't going to use it. There is nowhere in Dartmouth where this can be done, but there is a Park and Ride just outside but we were not able to ascertain whether we could leave the car for a couple of days. When we booked into the hotel (which only has one parking space and that had been booked) the manager was aware of how stressed we were and managed to find a space just near the hotel by requesting that the owner of a delightful little book store opposite if we could use the space she was currently using. She was extremely kind and moved her car for us to move ours in. I cannot praise this manager highly enough, and the rest of the staff, in the restaurant and room services, were efficient, friendly and could not do enough for one to make the stay as pleasant as possible. The food in the restaurant was excellent, dinner and breakfast, and had great variety. The room was perfect, great views out of the side window and, although this is a very old building, the furnishings were totally in keeping with it and the bed extremely comfortable. The toiletries provided were ecologically friendly and were available to buy if wished. Upon our departure, we were provided with a couple of cans of cold water for our onward journey.
I cannot recommend this hotel and its staff too highly.

I booked Bayard’s Inn for a girls’ trip to Dartmouth we my friend. The welcome we received was warm and friendly and our room was stunning. Beautifully decorated and in keeping with the tradition of the second oldest building in Dartmouth. The beds were comfy and the bathroom had local soaps and shampoos which smelt amazing! In the morning we had fresh coffee in our room. We ate out at a local restaurant in the evening but in the morning we had breakfast in the hotel and it was completely delicious. Catering for all tastes including vegans. The staff were wonderful and attentive and looked after our bags while we went for a morning mooch around the town. When we finally collected our bags, we were presented with a bag with two bottles of water and a bag of local fudge… how thoughtful! Plus a voucher for our next visit which we are already planning!! Would definitely recommend a stay at Bayard’s Cove, it’s such a delightful little place and even one night away felt totally relaxing. Next time we plan to eat in at the hotel in the evening as the food was outstanding… oh and so is the gin!!! We were blessed with lovely weather and all in all had a fab couple of days away.

Wonderful hotel, charming, cosy rooms worked into a historic building giving a feel of relaxation and adventure. We stayed with a baby in Jervis, a comfy room with shower en suite and chairs for the night feeds! The hotel laid on a travel cot complete with bedding. Choice of teas, local coffee and hot chocolate was great and the room had everything we needed. Staff were superb, breakfast was a good selection and cooked food was top quality. Thoughtful touches throughout and we enjoyed embracing staying in such a building, so much more character than others. Parking in October was fine, we found a space in the street behind the hotel, metres from the back entrance, and didn’t need the car for the next 3 days! In high season drop off and utilise the park and ride is probably the best idea. This was our second visit and I’m sure we’ll be back!
